Rule of Law (Tyndale, September 2017)

What did the president know? And when did she know it?

For the members of SEAL Team Six, it was a rare mission ordered by the president, monitored in real time from the Situation Room. The Houthi rebels in Yemen had captured an American journalist and a member of the Saudi royal family. Their executions were scheduled for Easter Sunday. The SEAL team would break them out.

But when the mission results in spectacular failure, the finger-pointing goes all the way to the top.

Did the president play political games with the lives of U.S. service members?

Paige Chambers, a determined young lawyer, has a very personal reason for wanting to know the answer. The case she files will polarize the nation and test the resiliency of the Constitution. The stakes are huge, the alliances shaky, and she will be left to wonder if the saying on the Supreme Court building still holds true.

Equal justice under law.

It makes a nice motto. But will it work when one of the most powerful people on the planet is also a defendant?

Are the leaders of our country undercutting the Rule of Law?

Randy Singer’s latest release is equal parts legal, political and military thriller

9/5/2017 || Seattle: In a world of political accusations and threats of war, what does the public need to know, and what is better left unsaid for our own protection? Are our leaders following the Rule of Law or acting outside it? In his latest legal thriller, Rule of Law (Tyndale House Publishers/September 5, 2017/HC ISBN 978-1-4964-1815-9 $24.99/SC ISBN 978-1-4964-1816-6 $15.99), award-winning author and attorney Randy Singer weaves a gripping page-turner that explores the inner workings of the White House, the CIA and the State Department in dealings with foreign governments. Drawing from one of his own recent cases, Singer gives readers a glimpse of what is really going on behind the headlines of today’s international events.

Equal parts legal, political and military thriller, the story begins with a SEAL raid on a Yemen prison. For the members of SEAL Team Six, it was a rare presidential mission, monitored in real time from the Situation Room. The Houthi rebels had captured an American journalist and a member of the Saudi royal family. Their executions were scheduled for Easter Sunday, but the SEAL team would break them out.

When the mission results in spectacular failure, the finger-pointing goes all the way to the top. What did the president know, and when did she know it? Did the president play political games with the lives of U.S. service members? Paige Chambers, a determined young lawyer, has a very personal reason for wanting to know the answer. The case she files will polarize the nation and test the resiliency of the Constitution. The stakes are huge,

the alliances shaky, and she will be left to wonder if the saying on the Supreme Court building still holds

true. Equal justice under law makes a nice motto, but will it work when one of the most powerful people on the planet is also a defendant?

Inspired by real events involving American contract workers detained in Yemen, Singer wrote Rule of Law to address what he describes as critical issues lurking on the horizon. “Is the president above the law in matters of foreign policy?” Singer asks. “Should the CIA be fighting shadow wars with drones and special forces in countries where we have not declared war? What happens when the lives of service members are sacrificed for political gain?”

To avoid getting bogged down in political polarization, Singer assures readers his fictional president, cabinet and Supreme Court bear little resemblance to the current administration and Court. He does, however, anchor the story in reality with historical references — political, military and legal — based on actual events. He also has great respect for the sacrifices made by the Navy SEALS and their families, some of whom attend the church where Singer serves as a teaching pastor.

Singer speaks with authority as a practicing attorney with expertise in anti-terrorism cases. He wrote Rule of Law to use fiction as a tool to bring to light the facts of what is happening in our world today and how these issues affect real people. He explains, “I want to share the rippling effects of what is really going on right now and why it’s important we are talking about these issues.”

Suggested interview questions

—In the author’s note of Rule of Law you explain you wrote the book to address some critical issues lurking on the horizon. What are some concerns you have that Americans should be aware of?

—Without getting into the details of specific cases, can you share how you’ve gained personal knowledge about some of the situations you write about in Rule of Law? Was the book inspired by actual events?

—How similar to past or current administrations is the cast of the government you created?

—Rule of Law is a legal term. For those of us not familiar with “legalese,” what does the term mean, and how does it apply to international settings?

—In the story, you pose the question, “Is the president above the law, or does the law govern even the most powerful?” Given today’s political climate, there’s enough difference of opinion to start a civil war. What’s your take on this question?

—Are we sacrificing our ideals as a nation to win the war on terror?

—Given all that is going on in this world, is there anything we can do about it? Do we need to be better informed, and if so, how do we learn the truth about what is happening around us?

—Your church serves many servicemen and women. How did your work with military families influence you as you wrote Rule of Law?

—In the midst of tragedy, what does it mean to rely fully on God to get you through?

Rule of Law uses the platform of fiction to bring a true-life message to a wide audience. What is the message you hope readers gain from reading the book?

This is a large book, but if you are anything like me, you won’t notice the length once as you read through this exciting book! Although I have never read this style of fiction before, with this book I was fully interested from the first chapter.

WOW! Rule of Law met all of my expectations, and then proceeded to exceed them. This is a blend of romance, military thriller, political thriller, legal intrigue, all masterfully woven together. The characters are rich, and the action is incredible. And in classic Singer fashion there was a twist at the end that I should have foreseen but didn’t. It was the perfect touch! This book is ideal for those who love a thinker’s suspense with political overtones. Rule of Law was well worth the wait. Singer is a master at the legal thriller.

Despite its multitude of pages, author Randy Singer does a great job of keeping the pace measured in Rule of Law. I liked the fact that Paige is a successful woman in a tough world. Her tenacity and intelligence played a huge role in the book, presenting her as a tremendous hero. Singer contrasts Paige’s fierce professional side with her more tender spiritual side. I’m not savvy on laws and such, so these emotional moments connected me to the story a little better.

I love crime dramas and thrillers, so I knew I’d really enjoy this book! This is a big, thick book! So don’t expect to just breeze through it in a couple of hours. Of course, if you read the “About the Book” you’ll not some striking similarities to real life events. The author’s knowledge of legal matters is abundantly clear, but his writing is in such a manner that one need not a legal degree to understand.

Rule of Law by Randy Singer is fiction, but to this cynical reader, it could just as easily be the depiction of a real-life scandal with wide-ranging implications. And that’s what makes this novel not just an unputdownable adrenaline-laced book with both courtroom and battlefield drama, but a really believable story of intrigue, deception, and cover-up at the highest levels of government. Why, oh why has it taken me so long to pick up a novel by Randy Singer?! I love a good legal thriller, and nothing says legal thriller quite like a military widow suing the president of the United States! Plot aside, the thing that gave this novel an extra edge, as far as I was concerned, was the teaming of lawyers Paige Chambers and Wyatt Jackson. One young, serious, and cautious, the other a veteran attorney who’s brash and wiley. What a combination! Courtroom drama, political conspiracy, military/CIA action, and a personal and heartfelt need to know the truth makes for a gripping legal thriller!

Beginning with the action-packed opening sentences of the book that swept me into SEAL Team Six’s mission, and continuing throughout each fascinating chapter, I was gripped by this story. Singer knocks this one out of the park as he expertly weaves together military intelligence, political machinations, and legal issues into a tale that, though fiction, is far too real for comfort. This is the first Randy Singer novel I’ve read and I’m certain it won’t be the last. The combination of the legal, military, political and intrigue is compelling.

  • ‘RULE OF LAW’ BY RANDY SINGER

It is just written so long paced as well as adding a ton of politics to the story. I feel like if the author lighten up on the political aspect and placed more focus on the action or thrill, this might have been less full of wind.

  • ‘RULE OF LAW’ BY RANDY SINGER

Rule of Law by Randy Singer was a really long book, and I struggled with wanting to read it. I know that has to do with the fact that I am so over politics in this country that when it came to reading a book that has to deal with that, I had no patience for it.

Prescient and gripping, the book proves that action and emotion can be expressed without compromising morality.

  • ‘RULE OF LAW’ BY RANDY SINGER

I had a hard time getting into this book. I think my main disappointment was that the “element of romance” died– literally– before it had much of a chance to develop. I did not expect this to be a romance novel. It’s not that genre at all. But somehow I couldn’t get past the grief part of the book to fully appreciate the intrigue/thriller part of the story line, which is really what the book is about. Also, I think I got bogged down in the politics. That being said, it was an interesting court case and I was intrigued to see how it turned out. And I liked several of the characters.

  • ‘RULE OF LAW’ BY RANDY SINGER

This is a legal procedure novel that could be out of today’s headlines. It brings up many questions relevant to how the U.S. government operates today. For example, how much secrecy does the government require to operate effectively? Should the U.S. send secret missions into countries with which we are not at war? I would have preferred a more concise novel with less description and character rumination but, other than that, a timely and thought provoking novel.

The author puts the reader’s mind to work, raising questions that you may not even think about. Lives being taken, political questions and what could happen and very likely does.
