Saturate Field Guide: Principles & Practices For Being Disciples of Jesus in the Everyday Stuff of Life (Saturate, February 2016)

Whether you’re just beginning a relationship with Jesus or you’ve been a follower of Jesus for a long while, many of us have a hard time translating the truths we believe in our mind, to the reality of our everyday life.

Given our tendency to wander away from God, we need both encouragement and tools to keep the gospel at the center of our action in the everyday stuff of our lives.

This 8-week guide offers an all-of-life approach to being disciples who make disciples of Jesus. What if every Christian believed they’ve been called to full-time ministry?

Authors ask believers to move beyond Sunday morning Christianity to true missional living

3/14/2016 || Seattle: For far too many Christians, the idea of being part of a church simply means attending a Sunday morning service, maybe a small group or a sprinkling of special events each year. Is that what God had in mind for his bride, the Church, when he sent his son to save her? Pastors and church planters Jeff Vanderstelt, and co-author, Ben Connelly, invite readers to experience something deeper in their new book, Saturate Field Guide: Principles & Practices for Being Disciples of Jesus in the Everyday Stuff of Life (Saturate/February 15, 2016).

Inspired by Habakkuk 2:14, which reads, “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea,” Vanderstelt and Connelly wrote the Saturate Field Guide to show believers how the gospel permeates every aspect of their life. This begins with understanding ministry isn’t just what pastors do on Sundays and discipleship is much more than a class or program. Instead, both are a 24/7 call to live in absolute submission to the Lord, joining with others on God’s mission, where each person sees himself or herself as a servant missionary sent to make disciples.

“This is not just about being a part of a Bible study,” Vanderstelt explains. “It’s about engaging in everyday life with a group of believers, who together, are committed to bringing the experience of Jesus’ rule and reign into a dark world and proclaim the gospel.” Both authors encourage readers of Saturate Field Guide to imagine their cities, neighborhoods, schools and workplaces proclaiming the glory of Jesus through words and gracious deeds so that every man, woman, and child has a daily encounter with Jesus.

Saturate Field Guide is designed to help readers of all levels of spiritual maturity maintain their eternal perspective and bridge the gap between what they know about God and his mission for them and the mundane realities of everyday life. With an eye toward keeping the gospel at the center of every interaction, the guide is an incredibly practical and engaging manual. Each chapter builds on the next, asking readers to align their heart with the will of God, examine their core beliefs and then launch into a mission where they can put their knowledge into hands-on practice. The 8-week guide offers questions, prayers and exercises designed to create disciples of Jesus Christ who, in turn, make other disciples.

The book, while inspired by Vanderstelt’s 2015 release, Saturate, (Crossway) is a stand-alone resource, intended to be used by both groups and individuals. No aspect of Christianity is designed to be an individualistic pursuit,” Connelly adds. “The best way to pursue sanctification and discipleship is lock-arms with others, working toward the same things and supporting each other along the way.”

Vanderstelt and Connelly hope Saturate Field Guide affirms the truth that when God’s people commit together to sow gospel seeds in the everyday rhythms of life, the ripple effect will move through their own lives out toward the whole earth, saturating it with the good news of Jesus.

  • ‘SATURATE FIELD GUIDE’

I could see using this Field Guide in a traditional church setting, a new church plant, a missional community, or a small group. I appreciate the flow of the material, the focus firstly on Jesus and Discipleship, the identity of followers of Jesus as a family of missionary servants, and the desire for everyday Christians to grab ahold of the Kingdom of God and live it out in the world.

  • AN ALL-IN-ONE PRACTICAL AND THEOLOGICAL GUIDE TO LIFE ON MISSION

It is ok if this does not fit neatly into 8 weeks. Keep at. Commit to finishing the book even if you don’t follow the pacing. Give people time to repent, confess and be transformed. The Field Guide will ask the tough questions and lead people through the process, you just need to stay with it even when it gets uncomfortable and challenging.

  • A SIMPLE, PRACTICAL, AND BIBLICAL APPROACH TO LIVING AS FAMILY, MISSIONARY, SERVANTS

There is no doubt in my mind that eight weeks devoted to living in community as “family, missionary, servants” will not only change your heart, but your neighborhood. Saturate: Field Guide is a resource that I myself will use, and it is a resource that you can benefit from whether you just began your relationship with Christ yesterday or you’ve been following him for a while.

  • GREAT DISCIPLESHIP RESOURCE

The authors have created a very practical resource to accompany Jeff Vanderstelt’s Saturate book (which is great BTW!). They give the reader an easy-to-follow approach for living out the gospel in everyday life. It is written in such a way that it can be used by virtually any type of group setting, large/small, young/old. We are using in my home for family discipleship. Highly recommend!

  • PERFECT RESOURCES FOR DISCIPLES

Perfect for anyone who wants to ‘be disciples who make disciples.’ This 8-week guide could be used as a individual study, however, I think it best in a group of two or more (and is encouraged in the book). I really liked that each week is broken up into seven different activities—start, read, think, pray, do, meet, floating day of rest. Also included is links for videos and additional resources for each chapter.

  • BEST MANUAL FOR A GROUP WHO IS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE DISCIPLES…

This is a great resource for leading a group of people into a life of discipleship. This is a clear manual with solid theological concepts, great questions, and very practical ways to put the concepts into action.

  • THEOLOGICALLY PRACTICAL GUIDE TO SLOWLY HELP COMMUNITIES MAKE DISCIPLES

In this guide you’ll learn about gospel fluency, practices that cultivate community, living out our gospel identities through the many roles we have (i.e. parent role, singles, vocation etc), dethroning idols, holistic discipleship environments, and so much more. The best part about it is that it engages not merely the intellect but heart forming practices around who we are as the people of God grounded in the scandalous grace of God.

  • REVIEW OF ‘SATURATE FIELD GUIDE’

And while this resource will certainly not be the “end all be all” when it comes to disciple-making, it sure is a great place to start. Off all the ways one could be choosing to spend his or her time with, this is more than worth the price. With the future of the Western church in a state of liminality, or disorientation and uncertainty, we certainly need something to give us creative prophetic imagination for future generations that is thoroughly grounded in the historical biblical person of Jesus Christ. I am confident that resources such as this, and others, will pave the way for that kind of missional progress in the bride of Christ.

  • ONE OF THE MOST PRACTICAL TOOLS I’VE COME ACROSS FOR MISSIONAL COMMUNITIES

Saturate Field Guide is the most practical and hands on tool for groups wanting to be a community of disciples that follow Jesus in the everyday stuff of life.

The past two years, I have been looking for effective ways to lead people in understanding and experiencing missional communities. This field guide in SO PRACTICAL! It lays a SOLID biblical foundation, out of which flows action that is REALISTIC.

You can tell that these men who wrote this have LIVED THIS themselves. Your heart will beat for the things that God’s heart does after using this resource!

  • REVIEW: ‘SATURATE FIELD GUIDE’

    FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
–The book is spiral bound so it lays flat. 5 stars for that!
–The format of the book is very appealing to the eye, so I am confident that our community members will feel that they are getting what they pay for even before they open the field guide.
–The format assumes your community meets weekly, but we are planning implementing it on an “every other week basis.
–There are tons of online resource links as well as plenty of space for writing in the workbook

  • READY TO SATURATE THE WORLD?

I’ve always known that living for Christ is an “all of life thing”, but I have to admit I don’t always know how to live that out. This book has been changing the way I think about discipleship and influencing the world around me.

This book can benefit every believer. It clearly explains why saturation is a biblical goal and presents compelling evidence that it can be carried out in contemporary society. The reader is confronted with the challenge to be able to defend his faith and present the gospel, not just rely on the pastor to do so in the context of a sermon

  • ‘SATURATE FIELD GUIDE’

This guide is the most practical guide to discipleship that I have ever read. It is much more than just information, it is written about our identity as believers and how that changes how we live. The focus is Jesus and He defines how we live. Jeff and Ben do an excellent job of pointed us (the readers) to the scriptures to see what God says about discipleship and how we should live.

  • EVERY CHRISTIAN SHOULD READ THESE!

This book and study opened my eyes to how not only how I am already discipling others but how I can disciple others in new ways. Church is not about a building or something we do once or twice a week but it’s really a state of mind and who we are as God’s people.

Honestly, every church and church leader should be reading these books and doing the study and then offering it in their churches. It would change the churches in ways that would be profound and truly be as the Lord Jesus wants our churches to be!

Vanderstelt and Conneley do a great job bringing together past, present and future orientation of how Jesus changes us and how we live this out in the rhythms of our everyday lives. This is an intensely practical resource guide that I would highly recommend for missional community leaders. If you’re unfamiliar with what missional communities are or how they function, please read Saturate instead to understand the philosophy behind the missional shift in small groups. It’s important to emphasize that the Saturate Field Guide is a practical manual for practitioners leading a missional community. If your church is moving towards adopting the missional community model, this is the practical resource for your leaders to shape and grow their groups. The Field Guide is a great resource.

  • HOW TO LIVE FOR JESUS IN NORMAL EVERYDAY LIFE

Personally, I love the challenge of becoming a saturated disciple and think this is a great way to evaluate yourself and become more committed to being a better disciple. However, this is only for people who are committed. If participants don’t do the homework, or do it half-heartedly, it won’t be beneficial to the group.
