Seagrass Pier

In a secluded corner of Hope Beach, one woman must decipher a stranger’s memories . . . before they cost her everything.

Elin Summerall was one of the lucky ones. Not only did she get a heart transplant, but the donor was a perfect fit. A miraculously perfect fit.

But when Elin begins having violent flashbacks—and vivid dreams of being strangled—she realizes that she has been the recipient of more than just a new heart . . . Elin is remembering her donor’s murder.

Her strange affliction has attracted some unwanted attention: from the press, from the authorities . . . and from the killer himself. Now, living alone with her young daughter and aging mother, Elin is being stalked—by a man she’s only met in her nightmares.

The police are dubious of her story, but one off-duty FBI agent is eager to help her: Agent Marc Everton, the father of Elin’s daughter.

Of course, he doesn’t know about that. Yet.

Now, in a remote cottage on Hope Island, Elin and Marc must probe the secrets buried in her borrowed heart. And there’s no time to waste. One man is desperate to silence her—before she remembers too much.

This is the first time I’ve heard of cell memory – where the recipient of an organ seems to recall and dream about things that happened to the donor. In this sorry Elin recalls things about the violent death of the donor of her heart. It’s interesting that the author has Elin’s mother suffering from dementia and losing her memory as Elin struggles as she recalls the memories of another person.

As Elin faces her widowhood, her mother’s illness, and her own confusion, she manages to also to be a single Mom to her little girl. The reader is filled with respect for Elin’s character.

Then there’s the character of Marc – who tries to work past his anger at Elin for denying him the knowledge that he is the father of her child. However, his anger doesn’t prevent him from taking on the responsibility for Elin’s safety and being involved in the life of their daughter.

The characterization is really well done. And there’s the underlying Christian theme of finding our identity in Love. As Elin struggles to come to terms with who she really is, her mother’s wisdom despite the dementia shines through:

It’s how we love, honey. And you love with your whole heart. God shines through you. Don’t ever let that change.”

I enjoyed the twists and turns of the story and the suspense sprinkled with romance and wisdom!

I’ll be looking out for more of Colleen Coble’s books.

Seagrass Pier is a great book. The first two books really drew me into this series and Seagrass Pier did the same. From the start this book took a hold and kept hold up until the end. Colleen Coble writes a fast paced, action packed, keep you guessing until the end book. I enjoyed learning about new residents of Hope Beach and finding out about the others that I have met and loved from the other books.

WOW! Talk about eerie, this story was riveting, spine tingling and really made me think hard about the implications made by the recipient of the heart. Still there is romance, mystery, intrigue and much more in this story. I suggest you keep your lights on, your doors and windows locked while reading this book. You will not want to trust anyone. Sorry this is coming from my own fear and insecurities. Hee! Hee!

I highly recommend/dare you to read this book.

Every time I pick up one of Colleen Coble’s books, it seems that she has become an even better writer. Her narrative and dialogue flow more smoothly with each novel. She builds meaty characters and has a gift for writing romantic suspense. I am a diehard armchair sleuth, and it was both gratifying and frustrating to figure out the whodunit at the point in the novel that I did. But “Seagrass Pier” is still an enjoyable way to get away for the weekend.

Colleen Coble offers another compelling novel, rich in characters and mystery. Although this book is clean, as all of Colleen’s books, I felt it lacked the Godly depth in the character’s lives that I have discovered in other novels she has written.

The knowledge Elin has obtained from the heart she received was an interesting plot, and encouraged me to do additional research on this topic. Colleen is a detailed author who never disappoints to allow any loose ends at the conclusion of her writing.

The suspense held me at the edge of my seat until the conclusion of the final chapter. This would be an excellent summer read for your vacation. It comes highly recommended.

It was one of those books that I didn’t want to put down because I was enjoying it so much. This storyline was really different, but the author really was able to pull it off as believable. I love stories like where I grow to really love the characters and think about them long after I’ve put the book down.

Seagrass Pier (The Hope Beach Series) was a suspense novel I finished this past week. Elin receives a heart donation from a woman who was murdered. Through this plot there are several this going on but it is not overwhelming or hard to follow. She started to nightmares that are not recognizable. She knows they are not her own, but rather are from her heart donor. How can anyone in that situation have support or backing, let along someone believing in her claims. Threats on her life keep this book packed with suspense and second guessing of what will happen next. This is an easy read but remember it is not real life. Several of the plots are not realistic but it is a fictional book.

This book will grab a hold of you and not let go, it is easy to sit and read it all in one sitting. There were so many twists and turns in this book, I thought I was on a roller coaster. I also love the location of this series and the characters in this book were great, plus we got to meet some new characters. There is not just the intrigue and suspense going on with Elin and Marc, but also a hundred year old intrigue as well. Great job, as always, Colleen.

This genre of “Romantic Suspense” is getting under my skin. I do like me some suspense, but I guess that I’m also getting to be a closet romantic. This is the third book in the Hope Beach series. While they may have been written as stand alone, there are characters that you reconnect with from each book. The suspense is accelerator to floor excitement that never lets up once. While I’m not 100% sure about some of the “coincidences” that happened for plot lines, but they weren’t so overtly unrealistic that they detracted from the story. The romance is pretty evenly distributed throughout the book but it does wind up with a typical ending.

Colleen Coble never disappoints and Seagrass Pier delivers the mystery and intrigue that we’ve come to expect from her. While these characters didn’t have strong Godly pursuits as I’ve seen in other books by this author, they were moral and the book is a clean read as usual. I enjoyed the readings from the diary more than any other part of the book and would have liked to have known more about Georgina (maybe she could have her own book?)
I do enjoy how Colleen Coble works conniving people into her novels, she shows the good side of people and the bad side of humanity.

I am a big fan of the Hope Beach novels. I had to buy the first one after I read the second just because I knew it would be good. I’ve read a lot of books by Colleen and I really think her suspense/mystery books are the best. While there is tons of romance, it’s not the main focus of the story and the intrigue adds so much. That being said I do think the first two books are better but this book is great! Taking you back to Hope Beach we get wrapped up in another murder only this one is being remembered by someone who has the heart of the woman murdered. Talk about creepy. I don’t know if it’s possible for someone to have a transplant heart and then start acting like the previous owner of that heart. But in any case it makes for a great story line.

I recently finished Seagrass Pier by Colleen Coble. I hadn’t read any of her books today and I was pleasantly surprised by the story.

The story focuses on a lady Elin Summerall who receives a ‘perfect match’ heart transplant from a young donor. However, shortly after receiving her new heart, Elin starts to have terrible nightmares and flashbacks she realizes that the person she received her heart from was murdered. I found this a little creepy. Imagine if you received an organ with a side of memories. In fact not just memories but also their likes and dislikes.

This story had me hooked from the beginning. In fact, I completely forgot that this was the third in the Hope Beach Series. I hadn’t read any of the other books in the series and honestly I didn’t notice. I knew a lot about the characters from the beginning. However I will have to go back and read them now.
I am not into scary books but this one is not really scary, but full of suspense, mixed with a love story.

I can honestly say it took me along time to guess who the true villain was. There were some extra plots in the book that confused me a little, maybe I wouldn’t have been confused with them if I had read the earlier books. However, for me they seemed a bit unnecessary. Saying that I really enjoyed this book. Full of suspense but no horror, blood, or guts.

    Definitely a great summer read!

This book offers surprise, romance, mystery, thrills and suspense. The character of Elin drew me to her as I learned of her heart transplant, the passing of her husband and being a single mother raising her daughter Josie. The story unfolds and intertwines the characters in complex ways. I enjoyed having Elin’s mother as a character in the book and showing three generations residing together. Your pulse will race as there is danger for several of the characters and a few that appear to be innocent have evil motives. There is true love displayed on all levels including that between friends, romantic love and love a mother has for her children and the reverse. In a world filled with evil, murder and selfishness we are able to read of love and life.

I’ve read several books by Colleen Coble, both contemporary and historical. I personally prefer her contemporary novels, and Seagrass Pier is excellent. At first I thought the plot was going to be like Double Blind: A Novel by Brandilyn Collins, but Seagrass Pier was quite different (although it came close to Brandilynn’s trademark “Seatbelt Suspense”, in that it was full of tension and hard to put down).

Seagrass Pier is the third book in the Hope Beach series, following Tidewater Inn and Rosemary Cottage. However, it can easily be read as a standalone title (I have read the previous two books—while all three books have the same location, they focus on different characters with only a few cameo appearances from the earlier books). Recommended for fans romantic suspense.

I loved the whole premise of this book. Nightmares/flashbacks from an organ donor, an unsolved murder, a gorgeous, remote house on the beach, and an antique map that’s been hidden along with it’s secrets. Colleen Coble knows what her readers want! Of course, she delights us with a swoon worthy love story in the midst of the mystery, too. :) My favorite character was Elin’s mother, Ruby. Due to a series of strokes, she’s experiencing early dementia and struggles for much of the story. Yet, through moments of clarity, she’s able to rise to the occasion and be a hero to her daughter. She deserves a round of applause! The beach, an old diary, a forgotten mystery, and a love story that seems destined to never happen kept me anxiously reading until the very end. Bravo Colleen Coble!

SEAGRASS PIER starts out chilling, and with little break stays that way most of the way through. I enjoy Ms. Coble’s books, she’s one of my top three favorite authors in the romantic suspense genre.

I did figure out who the killer was as soon as he walked into the pages of the books. But that didn’t ruin the story for me. I felt sorry for Elin, trying to balance a mother with dementia, a killer stalking her, and her daughter’s father showing up out of nowhere all at once. It’s a lot for any woman to deal with, even if she wasn’t suffering from nightly visions about the murder of the woman who donated her heart.

Never knowing what’s real, what’s a dream, and what’s a cell memory would have me scared to walk around corners, but Elin’s both brave and tenacious, which makes her totally cheer-worthy.
Of course, it only gets better when you do consider the wanna-be murderer and the cute guy. And the adorable mystery-child and forgetful mother. The writing was superb, characters relatable (even if I think perhaps the main character was a little too nonchalant about a killer stalking her! I’d have been scared beyond the ability to function!) and love story that you knew exactly where it was going but was exactly where you were rooting for it to go. There for a few different story lines and sometimes it felt maybe a little bit chaotic but that didn’t decrease the complete enjoyment that I felt through every turned (or swiped?) page.

Pinning down exactly what it is I enjoy about Colleen’s books isn’t easy. I’m not sure which component in her writing continually pulls me in, but what I do know, whatever the curiosity it always keeps me eagerly flipping the pages. Each of the “Hope Beach” novels have been the breezy kind of reads that define the term “beach read,” and while its setting does play host to reason why, it’s the deeper scars of the characters and its premise that keeps us engrossed (not to mention wishing we had a private beach to walk). Each one of the novelist’s books has unique individualities that could be pulled out of their respective pages or nice things that might be said about their characters, it’s the inclusive impression of each story…

Elin had her hands full with her mothers declining health, lack of sleep due to the nightmares, people stalking her and FBI Agent Marc Everton, who happens to be Elin’s daughter’s father, who doesn’t know about his daughter. As usual, Colleen Coble and her awesome professional writing skills brings her fans and readers another nail biting suspense with a mixture of believable characters that will keep you awake at night because you have to see whodoneit!

Just like the previous two books in her Hope Beach series, Seagrass Pier has just the right mix of romance and suspense. Colleen has put together an interesting cast of characters — several I would love to know in real life, and a few I would never want to run into. The suspense keeps the plot moving at a very intriguing pace and keeps you guessing about who the bad guys really are. The romance is very strong in the story and portrayed in ways I expect and appreciate in Christian fiction.

My Thoughts About The Book: I am a huge Colleen Coble fan. Seagrass Pier is an awesome addition to the Hope Beach Series. Even though there are some familiar faces from the previous books in the series it is definitely a stand alone. Coble is a wonderful developer of the character and her characters in this book leap off the page. The book is very fast paced and you are drawn into the story from the start. There is plenty of action and mystery. The bit of graphic in violence and mature themes surprised me a bit, so I feel I should give a small warning. Still even with the violence and mature themes this was one fantastic read that had me glued to the chair from the very beginning. I could not put it down! If this book were a movie I would be at the premier. When I finished the last page I realized my heart was pounding and I had lost a whole day held captive in this story. It is a must read!

This is another great book by one of my favorite authors. Colleen Coble has written another book for the Hope Beach Series; Seagrass Pier. I think what I like the most about the Hope Beach Series is the suspense mixed with a little romance. Colleen has a way of keeping you in suspense, leading you down a path and then throwing you a twist. I just love the way she develops the characters and the story throughout the whole book! Like the other books in this series, Seagrass Pier is set in a lovely area that Colleen describes so well you feel like you are there with her. Each of the characters is believable, and never seem contrived just to make the story move along. From the first few pages you are drawn to Elin and what is going on in her life. It never gets slow or bogged down and it will keep you going until the last page. I just loved it!!

My first thought is that the novel would get predictable, but thanks to the author’s great writing skills, all possible cliches were avoided. Overall, Seagrass Pier is a surprisingly modern day thriller that I enjoyed reading and I recommend to others.

I thought this was the best book in the series. There was lots of action, suspense and tension along with romance. There was more than one story going on at a time, but they were exciting and not difficult to keep track of. I thought the author did a great job weaving the different storylines together. I also enjoyed the Christian aspect of both main characters and how they dealt with their past sins or learned to deal with it, depending on the character. The both put God first and had a desire to help others. They were generous to strangers without expectation of being rewarded or having their generosity returned, but because it was how they believed God wanted them to act. I eagerly look forward to the next new series Colleen Coble has to offer.

A major theme throughout Seagrass Pier is the question of identity. Elin exhibits some markedly different behaviors after her surgery. Consequently, she starts to wonder if she’s losing losing her identity and taking on that which belonged to her heart’s donor.

This is a novel filled with various twists, turns and red herrings. We learn the identity of one “baddie” early on, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s game over. Little clues appear here and there that make you wonder if there’s more than one nefarious plot going on. I couldn’t make up my mind until almost the end. Despite several seemingly different story lines going on in the course of the novel, I wasn’t confused as each was clearly defined.

I have been loving Colleen Coble’s Hope Beach series, and Seagrass Pier is another gripping read. An expert at romantic suspense, Coble raises the chill factor of this novel by adding the facet of cell memory into the story, and the danger stalking Elin and the accompanying emotions are palpable. . . .Tense moments abound in this story, making it impossible to put down.

Colleen Coble’s novels, for me, are marked by three factors.
The first factor is the setting, a locale that is always carefully described and full of charm. Beautiful shoreline, peaceful nights… and crime.
The second is a small “family” of main characters who you really come to love.
And the third factor is suspense. Colleen stirs a ton of mystery into her tales.

This novel was engaging with a capital E. If you’re in the market for a character driven who-done-it, with a stay in a lovely old beach house included, then this is your book.

What a great Summer 2014 Vacation Read this would be.

This book was fantastic-I couldn’t put it down!! It was a mixture of suspense, drama and clean romance with an incredible story line. I read it within a couple of days although I would have loved to read it in one night, but life gets in the way. ;-)Within reading the first couple chapters, I was already hooked and impressed with the character plot and story line that I told several people about it and recommended they read it. The story line kept me guessing who the “bad buy” was the whole time-it was not predictable or boring. I also liked the historical mini story within the story about the owner of the house and how it tied into the main plot line.

I really enjoyed the romance between Elin and Marc. Their dynamic as they work together to bring a killer to justice was fantastic. There are some big hurts that must be overcome and trust to be regained. This story does a great job of reminding us that God forgives and we need to as well.

The diary entries that transport the reader back in time and tell the history of the home really added a lot to the story for me as well. There are so many threads throughout this book that are interesting and also kept me guessing about who might be out to silence Elin.

I was more than surprised to find myself reading this late one night and getting pretty scared while walking around my own home. To me, that is a sign of a great novel! One that takes me beyond words on a page and instead places me in the heart-pounding action like Elin’s character who is being stalked in a cat and mouse like game of suspense. One of the best suspense novels I’ve read in quite some time and easily enough for me to give this one a 5 out of 5 stars in my book. Warning: You might want to read this one during the daytime! It’s pretty suspenseful to read at night!!!

This was such a dynamic book. Unique for sure! Colleen has a way of making her characters jump off the page and right into your living room. The characters are so realistic and reachable. This story line seemed a bit far fetched and some authors wouldn’t have been able to pull it off, but Colleen skillfully convinced us of the probability with her words. She skillfully weaves budding romance in her novels that I just love. Probably my favorite part of her work is the suspense. Just enough to keep you on the seat of your chair without freaking you out. I read it in one sitting, which makes me feel bad that she takes so much effort and time to write it and then I just whip right through it! Well I do that because I can’t put it down, it was just that good!

Coble has crafted a very interesting novel centering on “cell memory,” experiences heart transplant recipients have – memories of the donor. The theme of what really gives a person identity is huge in this book and would make a good discussion for a reading group. Add death threats and you have suspense. Bring in a FBI agent and you have the possibility for romance. A well written novel with lots of action and much to think about.

I love this book! Colleen takes us back to Hope’s Beach, and she also introduces us to cell memory. Memory that a person who has received a transplant may remember from the person who they received the transplant from. This book is full of suspense, romance, a sweet little girl named Josie.
Elin has received a heart transplant from a murdered woman named Laura. She has dreams of Laura’s murder which makes her very dangerous to the murderer. I haven’t read a book with this much suspense in a long time and I loved every minute of it.

I found the plot to Seagrass Pier intriguing. It’s not often I read about heart donors, but to add that the heroine remembers her donor’s last moments and who her killer is, that makes for some great suspense. Add that Elin’s paired with the one man she shares a past with and it’s a set up for great conflict and romance.

Seagrass Pier has all of this and more. I truly didn’t know who the bad guy was until the reveal. There was a beautiful secondary story about fear that I really enjoyed. There was a heartbreaking look at dementia and caregiving. Beyond the donor story there was also a treasure mystery. I thought maybe there would be too many things going on, but I don’t think that’s the case. I liked the diary/treasure story, too.

With the backdrop of the Outer Banks, I can’t think of a more entertaining summer read.

“Seagrass Pier” was a page-turner from the very start and the suspense grew with each chapter. As the story progressed, the suspect list grew along with more than one surprising twist to the tale. Characters and dialogue were well developed and natural. As expected, a romance between Elin and Marc was inevitable yet 100% believable. Both Marc and Elin were flawed but admirable characters whose concern for others was obvious. Although not a predominate factor in the story, Marc and Elin’s faith during their trials was apparent.

This is my first book in the Hope Beach series and I have to say that I wish I had discovered this series sooner. This book is top-notch in romantic suspense and very much in keeping with Colleen Coble’s writing style in her other romantic suspense series. With such a unique and well written plot I was literally hooked from the very first paragraph and it’s very rare that I can say that. It kept me guessing throughout the entire book, never really disclosing the killer until the last part of the story, and that kept my mind constantly working on whodunit theories. I absolutely loved the fast-paced feel of the book. In a nutshell, Colleen Coble is the Queen of Christian Romantic Suspense. She draws you in quickly and keeps you guessing.
