  • I loved the Alaskan setting (would love to go there on a cruise someday), I loved that the book also took us into BC and California to mix it up a bit. I loved the main characters and how well developed the minor characters were. I loved how Landon and Piper gradually recognize their feelings for each other and begin to explore their relationship. I loved the mystery storyline and how that all played out (and that I hadn’t figured it out half way through).

Shattered was even better than Submerged, the first book in the series—and I liked that one a lot, too! :-) While Dani Pettrey’s first novel was superb, I could see improvement with how quickly the novel started off and how it never slowed down. Definitely a trait I like to see in the suspense fiction I read.

I think it’s best to describe this book as Romantic Suspense. I’m still not sure if this genre is one that I enjoy, however Shattered is a good story with some interesting plot twists.

The romance is throughout the book, but in a “clean” Christian way with mutual attraction but not much interaction, so to speak! The suspense is quite literally all over the map as the characters travel from Alaska, California and Canada trying to prove the innocence of Piper’s brother, Reef.

OMGOSH, Shattered by Dani Pettrey is the second book of her’s that I have read, and is also the second in the Alaskan Courage series. Now, I’ve always had a special interest/love/obsession with Alaska. I long to live there one day.. or at least visit, so reading a book based there, well it’s just up my alley! Throw in some mystery, romance and growing in Christ, and well, you’ve got a hit on your hands!

I love Dani’s writing. Her characters are real, dealing with real issues, things I could see happening in real life. She takes the challenge of writing Christian Fiction and making it relevant without compromising the story. The romance part of the novel stays true to form, dealing with issues single Christians face each day. I highly recommend Shattered by Dani Pettrey.

Shattered is the second book in the Alaskan Courage series. I have not read the first book, Submerged, but plan to and I am anxiously awaiting the release of the third book, Stranded, this October. Although, it is part of a series, this can easily be read as a stand alone book. There is enough back story given throughout the book that you can follow along easily. I really enjoyed the mystery throughout the book and did not find it to be overly predictable at all. I also liked following along as Landon and Piper allowed themselves to realize and admit their feelings for each other. I was as intrigued by the mystery as I was their relationship.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery, combined with a romance. There are some scenes that a teen might find disturbing

This is my second book in the Alaskan Courage series I have been honored to review and once again think Dani did an exceptional job at keeping the reader on the edge of their seats but also second guessing themselves just when they think they know all the answers. This book has all the earmarks of a classic suspense thriller with the element of romance woven in to keep you hoping for a positive outcome between Piper and Landon despite all the odds working against them. Truly a roller coaster ride set in the wild outback of Alaska and a must read for Christian Murder Mystery Genre Lovers! This one hits home with a 5 out of 5 stars! This can be read as a stand alone, but be warned, you’ll be wanting to go back to pick up Submerged, the first book in the series to see how it all began!

Shattered is one of those books that grabs you at the beginning and doesn’t let go until you’ve read the last page!

When I read Submerged, book one in Pettrey’s Alaskan Courage series, my favorite aspect by far was the budding relationship between Piper McKenna and Landon Grainger, so I was thrilled to learn they would be the focus of Shattered. Pettrey continued the will-they-or-won’t-they dynamic longer than most authors would have, and I loved it! I flew through the pages hoping they would finally admit their feelings for each other.

With suspense, romance, and a strong family dynamic, this series reminds me of Dee Henderson’s O’Malley series—and that’s just about the highest praise I can give to romantic suspense!

Dani Pettrey’s McKenna family ranks right up there with the O’Malley clan in my opinion! This is top-notch suspense with characters that you will love. Dani adds just the right amount of romance to her stories, and the faith of the McKenna family is evident throughout the novel.

While the family dynamic is familiar and enjoyable, Dani puts a unique twist in the stories with setting. Welcome to Alaska, reading peeps! Enjoy your stay, but remember that danger lurks everywhere…and if it’s out there, a McKenna will find it!

This book drew me in from the beginning. The characters are well developed and thought out. The suspense is gripping; the relationships are real. I was able to follow the story without reading the first book, but I am looking forward to reading it later. The third book, Stranded, comes out later this year, which should be a good one as well.

Shattered reads a lot like a modern-day adventure story with a ton of suspense thrown in. It seems that every time Piper and Landon turn around something else is happening to them, although it’s not unbelievable. I particularly liked the snowstorm scenes and thought that part of the book really showed off the true personalities of the main characters. I also loved that Piper’s devotion to the Lord came across as genuine and was such an integral part of the story.

This was a very suspenseful book and kept you guessing. I liked the characters. The book was also well written which made it easy to read. This book had lots of twists and turns and sent the characters in a lot of different and dangerous places. This book also showed how you need to rely on GOD and He will take care of things. Piper and Landon (I loved the hero’s name as that is my son’s name, only my son’s name is spelled Landan) we very good detectives and Piper was tenacious in her pursuit to clear her brother’s name. Good job Dani, I’ll definitely read more of your work.

Against the beautiful Alaskan background, this gripping ‘Who Dunnit’ with its intricate twists and turns proved to be a page turner, I will admit right off! Dani Pettrey knows how to build the suspense, she writes a good story and her characters are enticing!

Living the great life in such amazing surroundings turns dramatic when Reef, the youngest member of the family is arrested for the murder of a young athlete and the arresting officer turns out to be a close friend. Piper McKenna does not believe in her brother’s guilt and will stop at nothing to prove his innocence. In turn, Deputy Landon will do anything to keep the spirited young woman out of harm’s way.

I was up all night reading this one and I am glad I did it. I rarely do read all night, but I couldn’t put this one down. To me, I think what kept me in the book was the great plots, twists and turns. More so though was the way the author was bringing various previously hidden past information about characters’ lives to the forefront. Not only that, but to watch how a couple of the main characters were submitting to the Lord because they knew they weren’t really in control of life and that He is; plus seeing the truth of other characters reveal where their faith is and why they don’t or do believe in Him.
I suspect future sequels to the Alaskan Courage series will continue to follow the McKenna family along with the various mysteries that come across their lives. The author shares with her readers the heart of each character a little at a time, which makes for enticing reading. Piper’s story, it is stand alone, though the main characters in book one did make occasional appearances. I think that the third book will focus on another brother, Gage—but I may be wrong.

I enjoyed getting to know Piper better as well as the hero, Landon, and I hoped they’d find Reed innocent of the murder charges. Ok I didn’t think it was possible for this author to top Submerged (which was one of my absolute favorite reads of 2012) but she did! After finishing Submerged I could not wait to read Landon and Piper’s story. And while it was a painful wait it was worth it for this amazing book.
From the very first page you are sucked in to the action that just keeps going till you reach the end. I once again loved the whole McKenna clan and their whole family dynamic. Between the bordering on overbearing protectiveness, the merciless teasing, the fierce loyalty, and the unconditional love it’s hard not to love the whole group. I especially loved Landon and Piper’s romance! It was so funny how blind they were to each others feelings towards them. I also really enjoyed Gage and Darcy’s story!

  • Shattered by Dani Pettrey is the 2nd book in what I feel is my new favorite series. I started reading it and couldn’t stop. I love stories that are about families–where we get to learn about each person’s story. This is one of those series. I also love hearing about families that stick together, even if they don’t live near each other, which they do in this book. As soon as I finished this, I texted my BFF and told her to go get the books and start reading them. I told her they will be our new favorites next to the O’Malley series by Dee Henderson. The only hitch to this is the murderer doesn’t want them to succeed. Of course, the reader finds themselves reading about a blooming love affair, which involved four characters totally unaware that something was actually developing between them. It was a sense of unrequited love.

I did enjoy this book and I fell in love with the McKenna family and all the main characters because of the deep devotion they had for each other, God and the love of their little town in Alaska. There is nothing like a small town where every really does know your name and your personal affairs.

“Shattered” by Dani Pettrey is an exciting and romantically infused suspense read! It is a legally passionate story in which the leading lady, Piper McKenna, is frequently the only believer in the saying, “innocent until proven guilty”. When a murder is committed during a sporting event in Yancey, the entire town is catapulted into an emotional frenzy. “Shattered” reads well as a stand-alone novel, but the depth of the relationships is greater if you’ve read “Submerged” (the first novel in the Alaskan Courage Series). I don’t like comparing authors to each other as each and every author has their own voice and does a great job of using it to tell us great stories. This time, though, I just have to draw a connection between this great new author and one of my most favorite authors, Dee Henderson. Dani creates an ensemble of cast members that all have integral and important roles in each other’s life. Dani weaves the storyline through the different characters and their interactions with each other in a way that makes you interested in each and every one of them. I love the McKenna family; their strong love for each other is apparent as they work together to help their youngest brother, Reef. Piper and Landon get the spotlight in this story, but the secondary characters are strongly developed as well, and they are waiting in the wings for their turn to take the featured lead.

The mystery/suspense is one that Angela Lansbury’s Murder She Wrote character Jessica Fletcher would love to sink her teeth into. Add layers of romance and you have a nail-biting, toe-curling emotional roller-coaster ride that is sure to satisfy.

A book that will have you turning pages well into the night. Full of Suspense and adventure. I highly recommend it if you like these types of books.

While ‘Shattered’ is set in fictional Yancey, Alaska the author modeled it after the small communities that are common around here. There’s lots to love if you are a Winter sports enthusiast as the family at the center of the story, the McKennas, specializes in adventure tourism and are at home on skis and boards. I couldn’t get a real feel for the community outside of the central family and those involved in their immediate plot, but Dani Pettrey does a great job immersing the reader in the family culture.

The McKenna siblings love each other like only siblings can despite their differences. Each of them is painted as a very real person who is constantly changing and growing. I really came to love each character and I’m super excited that there are two more books in the series to read!

Loyalty is a strong theme in the storyline and that always appeals to me. Believing in someone, despite the evidence.

I like that Pettrey tells her story through dialogue. She lets the interaction between the characters tell the readers what is happening. Reading that style of writing, I feel as though I am “in” the story rather than just reading.

Shattered was a page turner for me – not only to solve the murder but for the romance!

Shattered had a love story intertwined with a good murder mystery. Always a good combo. I got to know the characters well and was excited to keep reading to find out who the killer really was.

The characters in Pettrey’s book were so vivid. I could not put the book down. I am glad I started reading it on a Friday night because sleep was not happening until I knew the end results of the plot. The connection between Landon and Piper and the whole McKenna family is electrifying. Pettrey is a master wordsmith and quite a weaver of a story. This is a definite must read.

The plot of this mystery is a good one. An innocent man facing jail time for a murder he did not commit and family and friends who are determined to find the murderer is not original but engaging. The book is not so gripping that you can’t put it down, but holds your interest to keep coming back.

For some reason, Alaska has always intrigued me, so I enjoyed reading about the various locales featured in the book. The book is second in the Alaskan Courage series, so I will be looking for the first book in order to catch up on the beginning of the story.

Shattered surpasses Submerged. Authors often improve with each book they write, and though Dani didn’t need to improve, she did. I fully intended to read part of the book and finish it the next day, but it was so good, so full of suspense and action, that I could not put it down. She has brought back the McKenna family, and this time one of the family, Reef, the rebel baby of the family, has been found at the scene of a murder, and he looks guilty as sin. The rest of the family, and family friend Deputy Landon Grainger are determined to prove Reef’s innocence, no matter where on the globe they have to travel.

It is rare for me to be giddy over a suspense work of fiction. Sure, I like the genre as well as the next person but it’s one I’ve drifted from since reading Dee Henderson’s O’Malley series years ago. Nothing seemed to intrigue like those books. Until now. In Dani Pettrey’s terrific character driven series, I feel as if I’ve stepped into a world that, although it’s nothing more than fiction is in fact, very real.

Shattered starts out slow and was a bit hard to get into for me but once it started rolling WOW! I found it very hard to put down. The story was well thought out, full of layers and emotion which kept me thinking and involved in the story (ie – wondering what will happen next). Another plus is that the spiritual content of the book was very well done and it was nice to see each character’s thought process as they considered who God was, what he had done for us and in this book it was nice to see a character who was drawn to God and leaned on him during a section of the book that was full of tension.

This is an outstanding book for a rainy day or when you have a few hours to kill…

There is a great mystery here, with each page keeping you reading. This will be a series that I will be hoping comes out on audio so that my teenage son that loves mysteries will enjoy.
I also really liked how it tied in the issues with giving into temptation when it comes to drinking, and immoral behavior.

Litfuse gave this book to me in eBook format. The opinions are my own

I haven’t read mystery/suspense in a long time, but picking up this set of books from Pettrey has sparked my interest. They’re compelling, the characters have depth and feeling, and the plot is full of twists and turns that keep readers turning the pages.

The McKenna family is tight-knit, but they behave like a real family with problems. They look out for each other but they drive each other crazy sometimes. I want to re-read these books to spend time with the family because it’s not hard to imagine they’d welcome you to their family get-togethers.

And while I’m not the biggest fan of cold weather, Pettrey makes Alaska down-right appealing.

Once again, Dani has crafted a plot that grabs you from the beginning and keeps you anxiously turning pages until the very end. The story has just the right blend of adventure, suspense and romance. The characters are very believable, real people struggling through life at different levels of faith.

If you enjoy great Christian suspense from authors like Dee Henderson, Irene Hannon, and Lynette Eason, I would strongly recommend that you give Dani Pettrey a try.

Piper is determined her little brother is completely innocent and she refuses to stay out of the investigation, regardless of the danger. She even follows Landon to Canada, after she had been run off the road for asking too many questions. The romantic tension between these two is a roller coaster ride. It is definitely one that kept me up late turning pages to see what was going to happen next.
This is definitely a book for someone who enjoys a good mystery with romance.
    A definite must read!

I loved reading the first book in the series, Submerged, and I eagerly signed up to read the sequel, which I received free in exchange for my honest review. A majority of Christian fiction series has different main characters for each book, so it was a nice surprise to find Piper McKenna back for another round of mystery and suspense as she tries to prove her brother’s innocence. Author Dani Pettrey does a great job of crafting an intriguing plot that kept me guessing until the very end. I can’t wait until the third book is released.

This was a fabulous book. It had everything. It had intrigue, mystery, action, drama, romance, and faith! I stayed up very late one night to finish because I just couldn’t put it down. After reading the first book in the series I was happily surprised that this book was even better than the first. I am falling in love with the characters and feel like a part of the McKenna family. They are so wonderfully complex and human. The faith that most of the family shares is strong yet they still make mistakes. This is what makes it so believable and fun. The chemistry within the family and with their romantic interests is so strong I feel like I’m in the room.

There was no such a thing as leaving the story behind when I needed to go work, though I could not read, I was thinking about it. As the evening hours wore on, I knew I needed to either finish the book, or get my mind settled, because adrenaline was coursing through my veins. In the end, I needed to do both in order to find rest.
