Song of Silence (Abingdon, April 2016)

Music taught Lucy love and beauty. Could silence teach her hope?

Lucy and Charlie Tuttle agree on one thing: they’re committed to each other for life. Trouble is, neither of them expected life to look like this. Charlie retired early, but Lucy is devoted to a long-term career . . . until the day she has no choice.

Forced to retire from her position as music educator in a small Midwestern K-8 school, Lucy can only watch helplessly as the program her father started years ago disintegrates before her eyes. As the music fades and a chasm separates her form the passion of her heart, Lucy wonders if her faith’s song has gone silent, too. The musical score of her life seems to be missing all the notes.

When a simple misstep threatens to silence Lucy forever, a young boy and his soundless mother change the way she sees—and hears—everything.

Do you allow your job to define who you are?

Cynthia Ruchti calls readers to redefine who and whose they are when life hits a sour note.

3/22/2016 || Seattle: What’s the first thing mentioned when introducing two strangers? Typically, one person introduces another by saying the individual’s name, followed by his or her vocation. “This is my friend, Bob. He’s an airplane mechanic.” “I’d like you to meet Sally. She’s a triathlete.” It’s natural for people to derive their sense of self from what they do, not who they are. In her latest novel, Song of Silence (Abingdon Press/April 5, 2016/ISBN: 9781426791499/$14.99), award-winning author Cynthia Ruchti reminds us God takes a different approach when it comes to identity and explores what happens when identity can no longer be linked to an occupation or life’s passion.

In Song of Silence, readers meet Lucy and Charlie Tuttle who, despite their differences, can agree on one thing: They’re committed to each other for life. The trouble is neither of them expected life to look like this. Charlie retired early, but Lucy has been completely devoted to her long-term career as a music educator in a small Midwestern school . . . until the day she has no choice.

Forced into retirement because of school budget issues, Lucy can only watch helplessly as the music program her father spent years building disintegrates before her eyes. As the music fades and a chasm separates her from the passion of her heart, Lucy wonders if her faith’s song has gone silent too. When her grown children have to move back into the family home, new challenges emerge, and the musical score of her life seems to be missing all the notes. When a simple misstep threatens to silence Lucy forever, a young boy and his soundless mother change the way she sees — and hears — everything.

All authors put at least a hint of people they know into their characters, and Ruchti’s husband recognized himself in Lucy’s husband, Charlie. Although he was forced into retirement similarly to Lucy, his approach to retirement more closely resembled Charlie’s. Ruchti admits her reaction would have been more like Lucy’s. “What was only a minor interruption for my husband would have been more devastating for me.” Ruchti adds, “When Lucy’s occupation was stripped from her, she flailed and floundered. However, who we are, and whose we are, are because of who God is, eliminating long-lived identity crises. No matter our position, station, work, or lack of it, I know I am His beloved child and He is my loving Father. The rest are mere details.”

The author also drew from her own life when creating the main character, Lucy, whose name and influence were inspired by her fifth-grade music teacher. “Some teachers leave a lasting impression on our lives and on our souls,” Ruchti reflects. “Like the ‘Lucy’ I know, in the story Lucy taught the students entrusted to her not only the enriching importance of music, but its elegance and ability to communicate.” Ruchti’s father was also a highly-respected music educator, and he added to her appreciation for how music could convey deep emotions such as joy, peace, sorrow, and strength.

Ruchti hopes readers will not only find themselves lost in a compelling story, but will hear in the background notes an encouragement to hold onto hope even when life’s song is silenced, even when unexpected and unwelcomed pauses interrupt the music.

Advance Praise

“Cynthia Ruchti’s enthralling novels are always on my automatic buy list. Her beautifully written stories take me on a journey through my own heart and soul. Highly recommended!”— Colleen Coble, author of Mermaid Moon and the Rock Harbor series

“As a teacher who has experienced reduction in force (RIF), the emotions of the main character, Lucy, proved transparent and real. This book gripped my heart from the first page to the last with the reality of the situation. It taught me to ‘keep playing in the silence.’” —Cleo Lampos, M.Ed., special education teacher, speaker, author Teaching Diamonds in the Tough

Suggested interview questions

—Your characters are usually based on people you know or have met. Can you tell us about the woman who inspired the main character, Lucy, in your new book, Song of Silence?

—Music is almost a character itself in this book. How do you use music and song to tell the story?

—What role has music played in your personal story?

—As in music, rests or pauses in life play a key role in Song of Silence. Some rests are welcomed, while others can feel like cruel interruptions. Have you ever experienced an imposed rest, and how did you handle it?

—One of the other major themes in Song of Silence is identity. From where do you think most people derive their sense of self? What does a healthy identity look like?

—Why did you choose to write about a couple who has been married for 30 years in this book, when so many people are used to reading about young love?

—What lessons can couples approaching a later season of life learn from Lucy’s relationship with her husband, Charlie?

—Each of the characters in Song of Silence takes a unique path in dealing with his or her disappointments. What have you learned from your own letdowns and frustrations?

—Lucy’s grown children move home again because of life changes, which is something we see more and more in this day and age. Do you think a parent’s job is ever really done?

—How were you emotionally impacted while writing some of the very tender scenes in Song of Silence?

—Do you think the arts should be a more prominent part of modern education?

—You’ve said the church small group you participate in with your husband always plays a role in the writing of your books. How is that?

—What is the number-one message you hope readers hear from the words of Song of Silence?

Half way through my heart was touched. I have to say the first half of this book was a struggle. Honestly I had to push myself to continue reading this book. My feelings were that the first half was unnecessary. If the book had started on pg 153 I would have been totally into it.

As I read the book, I found myself stopping to mark passages about marriage, silence, and more. At times it seemed like I was reading a marriage or retirement advice book. but never in a boring way. Lucy and her family’s story always took the forefront, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • MUSIC COMES IN MANY FORMS

This is a slow moving book that covers quite a bit. First there’s the cut of the arts programs at the school where Lucy works. This is a very real problem facing schools across the nation. Next Ruchti tackles marriage and family and throws a deaf character in the mix as well as a child with Aspergers. There is a lot going on here but it all makes sense and is relatable. Ruchti’ s strength is writing with humor about the everyday in a way that the reader can find their own message. It works.

  • ‘SONG OF SILENCE’ REVIEW

I enjoyed this story very much. It showed how we should let God control our lives and to never give up hope. This was very well written and very true to life.

The emotions that Lucy had to work through were similar to how I felt when I had to give up teaching because we relocated. It was a grieving process that was hard for some to understand. Lucy’s solution was an encouragement to me.

I have read almost all of the books by Cynthia Ruchti and I think her books are getting better with each book she writes. I love how deeply she makes her reader connect to the characters and the details she goes into when giving her characters personalities. I could feel the pain Lucy was experiencing all throughout the book and the pain Charlie felt because he couldn’t relieve hers by making her dream of teaching music hang on just a bit longer.

  • CYNTHIA RUCHTI’S ‘SONG OF SILENCE’ MUSIC-THEMED GIVEAWAY AND BOOK REVIEW

Cynthia Runchi’s main character in Song of Silence is a woman in her late fifites who was laid off from her beloved job as a music teacher when the program was the victim of budget cuts. Her husband has recently retired. He was looking for a passion and when she was laid off, he assumed she’d join him at it. She feels smothered, and yet she sees her husband’s irritating actions for what they are–expressions of love. He wants to spend more time with her and to do things together; she feels smothered and seems to want to be left alone to wallow in her grief. The book is Christian fiction and mentions prayer and faith but unless you are anti-faith, I don’t think there is enough religion in the book to turn you off. Grade: B+

I loved the story of Lucy and I think that as a teacher I can relate to her. It was more of a tearjerker than I’m used to but it was really well done. Definitely worth the read.

  • ‘SONG OF SILENCE’ BY CYNTHIA RUCHTI

Song of Silence was a story that I connected with on so many levels. It was heartfelt, humorous, had lovable characters, had some down-to-earth realistic romance, a little heartbreak, and so many sweet moments of both discovery and beauty in the small things. If you’ve enjoyed Ruchti’s other books or enjoy Christian Fiction, this is definitely a book to pick up!

  • MUSIC TAUGHT LUCY LOVE AND BEAUTY. COULD SILENCE TEACH HER HOPE?

This is such a great novel as I find myself considering entering the work force at the same age as Lucy is and wondering how I will be received. For me, this one easily goes down as a 5 out of 5 stars and a Reader’s Discussion Guide is included for those real book clubs to enjoy! I hope Cynthia decides to expand this into a series of the women we meet in Lucy’s HHATT group! Would love to know their stories!

  • ‘SONG OF SILENCE’

I have always been a fan of Ruchti, but this book did nothing for me.

Lucy’s character got on my last nerves. When she found out her job had been eliminated, she acted like the world had ended. Pretty much the entire book includes Lucy moping around with no desire to find something else to make her happy. Her willingness to let this one event dictate her entire life grated on my nerves in this most annoying way.

  • ‘SONG OF SILENCE’ BY CYNTHIA RUCHTI + GIVEAWAY

Song of Silence reminded me the meaning in the Heart of Worship, as well as a musical piece that brings to the forefront, love in relationships, from marriage to friendship to parentage, and all this includes love in God. All the characters round out the notes perfectly, and as a romantic at heart, might I add, Charlie’s wit, simplicity and support of Lucy reinforces his “good man” status. The multiple arcs that play on in this musical score makes it interesting, and as the composer, Cynthia Ruchti gave us a masterpiece.

  • ‘SONG OF SILENCE’ BY CYNTHIA RUCHTI

For most of this story I found myself thinking that this was not a book really suited for where I am in my life. Different stories resonate louder with some people or during some seasons of life than others, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I thought the last portion of this book really shone as Lucy goes through a time of reflection and growth. Cynthia Ruchti is known as a writer of hope, and while I might not have completely related to Lucy, I felt the tug of that hope because hope is universal.

Ruchti’s cast of characters are endearing, and the story moves along quickly and keeps the reader’s attention to find out what Lucy Tuttle discovers about her life and the lives of the ones she loves.

  • ‘SONG OF SILENCE’ BY CYNTHIA RUCHTI

The plot and characters were great but somehow, I just felt disconnected. I had trouble liking the main character, Lucy. She’s not very relate-able, although age is most likely the culprit here. The pacing was a bit slow, too, for my liking. Overall, I am not that “into” this book. It’s such a shame that I did not really like this. I guess, I am not really one of the targeted audience for this one.

  • ‘SONG OF SILENCE’ BY CYNTHIA RUCHTI: A REVIEW + A GIVEAWAY

As a musician, I saw a strong comparison between the flow of Song of Silence and the natural flow of a classical piece of music. I suspect perhaps this was intentional, and it was well done.

After a dramatic opening, the song moves into a slower, darker section. Themes and ideas begin to twine through until, in the middle, the tempo increases and a new section begins. Cymbal crashes and dissonance appear, the smooth themes becoming turbulent. And then, as often with good music, the chords resolve into a peaceful conclusion.

Such is the journey in Song of Silence

I struggled to get into this book, I slogged through, and while Cynthia’s writing style is impeccable, it is not my favorite of her books. There were moments I literally wanted to shake Lucy. Oy, she frustrated me, it seemed she was so determined to wallow in her situation. When I pick up a book by Cynthia Ruchti, I know I am in for a treat. While all of her books are hemmed with hope, this one sets a new bar for encouragement for the soul. Were a casual reader to simply skim the novel, the time would be well-spent as the story is engaging. (Although I challenge anyone to simply gloss over any part of this magnificent book!) But for the thoughtful reader, especially one who loves and appreciates music, this tale is a veritable symphony for the soul. […] Ruchti’s exquisite prose begs to be highlighted, quoted, and turned into framed art…

It wasn’t until the final quarter of Song of Silence that I began to feel the emotional pull of the book. This is when one false step forced Lucy to re-evaluate her life. It became impossible for her to return to the life she had known and she realized that there were other options for her. This is where Cynthia Ruchti’s creativity shines its magic and what makes her one of my favorite contemporary fiction authors. Her writing is deep without being difficult to comprehend.

While I’m not a musician, I still was able to connect to this book with the marriage theme and with struggling to find new purpose mid life after a path has already been chosen. There were parts of this book that made me chuckle, and parts that made me tear up. Some bits I could really relate to. . . Other parts I couldn’t relate to at all. • FICTION BOOK REVIEW: ‘SONG OF SILENCE’ BY CYNTHIA RUCHTI

Song of Silence has a good story line, but it just didn’t resonate with me. I had a hard time feeling sorry for Lucy because she whines so much. Charlie, bless his heart, tries to help but just seems to get in the way. If you love music, or you’re a musician, you’ll probably relate to Lucy better than I… Cynthia does paint pictures with her writing which, for me, made the book more palatable.

Ruchti has written a thought provoking novel of character transformation. It made me think of how I would respond if my profession and passion were ripped away from me. There are many other issues covered in the book too, like spouses having different expectations of retirement, an adult child (and family) moving back home, the role of music in helping special needs children, and more. This is a great book for reading groups as there is much to discuss.
