{More about Stress Test}

They may not have enough evidence to convict him, but they have enough to ruin his life.

Dr. Matt Newman thought he was leaving his life in private practice for a better one in academic medicine. But the kidnappers who attacked him as he left his last shift in the ER have no such plans—they just want him dead. Bound and in the trunk of his car, Matt’s only thought is escape. He does so, but at a price: a head injury that lands him in the ICU . . . where he awakens to discover he’s being charged with murder.

Sandra Murray is a fiery, redheaded lawyer who swore she was done with doctors. But when Matt calls, she knows she can’t walk away from defending someone who is truly innocent.

Matt’s career is going down the drain. His freedom and perhaps his life may be next. But with the police convinced he’s a murderer and the kidnappers still trying to finish what they started, finding the truth—and the faith to keep going—will be the toughest stress test Matt has ever endured.

Stress Test is the latest offering by physcian turned author Richard Mabry. In this book he turns his medical knowledge into an intriguing medical mystery. Dr. Matt Newman is attacked as he leaves the hospital. When he awakes in ICU, he finds he is the suspect in a murder. His journey becomes a twisted road to try to find out what happened and why while avoiding a murder conviction. Sandra Murray is an attorney who wants to find justice for her criminal clients, but she also wants to stay far away from doctors. The plot builds as the two work together on Matt’s case. There are enough twists and turns to keep a surgeon guessing and keep the pages turning.
While there’s a romance thread, it takes a secondary seat to the mystery. Matt struggles with faith. I think many of us can relate as we

  • This medical suspense novel (with a hint of romance) is chock full of fast-paced twist and turns that will keep you guessing till the very end. The medical aspects are fascinating, not overly dominant and not overly medical so as to confuse or annoy the reader – it was just right. The two main characters, Matt and Sandra, are very likable and have depth to them. I liked the subtle romantic friction going on between the two of them. I also liked it that the conversations about faith worked well with the storyline and didn’t come across as heavy handed or forced.

Stress Test is only the second book I’ve read by Richard L. Mabry , but it’s my favorite so far. I really liked the whole story and that, even though it was known who some of the bad guys were, there were still surprises in the novel.

I have been a fan of crime fiction/mystery novels for a long time now, and while most of the novels I have read have been non-Christian (fave authors include Kathy Reichs) I have been delighted to see quite a number of Christian authors delving into this genre in recent years. My favorites being Dee Henderson and Kathy Herman. Now I am excited to add Dr. Richard Mabry to the list. I have read a number of his books and was very excited to read his most recent release, Stress Test, as a member of the LitFuse Publicity Group’s Blogger Review Team.

The book captures your attention from the get-go, drawing you into twists and turns from the first pages of chapter one and not letting up until the end of the book. Not only is there mystery and suspense, but just enough romance to make for a great novel.

I love stories where the main characters’ faith is strengthened, not weakened, by the events of the book. And this book is no exception. God has a way in real life of stripping us down to the bare essentials in order to direct us into the best pathway for our lives. And Doc Mabry has ably depicted this in Stress Test. An excellent, fast-paced read, combining the best of medical and legal thrillers.

Stress Test is a fiction novel that contains loads of suspense for the reader to enjoy. This is the first book that I have read by Richard L. Mabry. I can truly declare that he knows how to write an intricate plot that will engage readers into the very last page. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to read medical, mystery, suspense, romance, and adventure filled novels.

I immensely loved the Faith aspect of the novel. The novel gave me encouragement that I should continue seeking God in finding my wife and the book displays that God can turn anything around. If you’re looking for a new exciting fiction novel to read, then this one will definably influence that God is in ultimate control and he can turn everything bad to good.

If you haven’t heard of Richard Mabry then you’re missing out. This author writes medical suspense and he’s really good at it. Stress Test opens with action that doesn’t let up until the end. I whipped through this book in one day while the housework waited (I think my clothes are still in the dryer!)
What I liked about this book is that it kept my attention and didn’t confuse me with too many characters.
Dr Matt Newman and Sandra Murray were both characters that had depth to them, plus they were Christians with a moral standard.
Well researched and thought-provoking, Stress Test is a great way to spend a few hours.

From the first paragraph of Stress Test you are placed in the life of Dr. Matt Newman, a surgeon just coming off a long shift. You feel the tiredness, you pull out your car keys in the parking garage, and then attackers grab you from behind and you feel the cracking pain of breaking ribs as they throw you to the concrete floor.
“Lets get him in the trunk,” says the voice. And they bind Dr. Newman with duct tape and lock him in his own car’s trunk.
This book had me from that line “Lets get him in the trunk,” and the story never let up after that. And you are hoping that he lives through it.
Thank you Dr. Mabry for writing a book with danger, mystery, suspense and a very subtle hint of romance that grows out of caring love, the way it should. I am waiting for Heart Failure next!

In the book market you will find a number of successful authors who write in the medical thriller genre. Authors who are doctors and can write with authority from a medical standpoint. However, if you prefer to limit yourself to reading works written by Christians, your selection begins to shrink. Awhile back I saw that a retired physician (and his picture looks the epitome of a gentle, kindly family doctor) was now in the playing field of physicians who write medical thrillers published by Christian publishing houses. I could hardly wait to get my hands on his new book, Stress Test. His name is Dr. Richard L. Mabry.

Stress Test is another stellar suspense novel by Dr. Richard Mabry! The beginning was so suspenseful and immediately drew me in. With every page, it seemed that clues were discovered and then another twist was thrown in to muddy the waters a bit more. It wasn’t until the very end that things really came together for a neat conclusion.

I have not read anything by Richard Mabry but this book is excellent on so many levels. The plot is well written, the medical information is obviously written with knowledge, and the strong faith in God that continues throughout the book sucked me in. Stress Test is a murder mystery that frustrates me because no one believes Matt but it clearly proves that when everyone else fails him he turns to Christ. One awful thing happened and that created so many other problems that all Matt could do was give it to God. If only we could do this daily even when things aren’t going wrong.

This book is a great fast paced novel and I highly recommend!

There are some faith aspects as part of this book, but it’s not preachy at all. We have characters who are curious about God, characters who don’t believe in God, and characters who are strong (or becoming strong) Christians. No one is preachy. It’s all very real. If you’re not a reader of the Christian persuasion, I don’t think you should let the Christian parts scare you off. The action, the mystery, the suspense – it’s all a much greater focus. The story itself is right up there with mainstream mystery/suspense thrillers.

Wow. I have enjoyed each of Dr. Mabry’s previous books but this is his absolute best yet! I made the mistake of starting it at bedtime and stayed up way too late because there was simply no convenient stopping place. Aptly titled Stress Test, the adrenaline fairly drips from the pages.

found “Stress Test” to be a suspense filled medical based drama that seemed oh so realistic. The story grabbed me from the first pages and the questions of who would have done this and why kept the plot racing along for me. Because the story revolves around a doctor I was leary that I might become overwhelmed with medical jargon, but that wasn’t the case at all, instead the mystery and suspense was the main focus. Mr. Mabry does weave in a few medical procedures into the story, but I found that they just kept the plot moving, and really lent a true air of authenticity. Anyone who enjoys a fast paced, suspense filled drama, mystery that has interesting characters, romance along with spiritual undertones woven into the story will certainly enjoy this one. I found it an interesting story that I really couldn’t put down!

  • While this is not the normal type of book I read, I could not stop reading this one. This book would make such a great movie, as it never has a dull moment. The plot of the book basically encompasses one of my worst nightmares-to be accused of murder and have no way to really prove my innocence. I also totally love that a retired physician wrote the book.

If you are looking for a great suspense-filled book to read, that you won’t want to put down until the end, this is the book for you. I think that my husband will really enjoy this book and it is now on his list to read. Maybe you should add it to yours?

Richard Mabry is not a new author to me. He has written 4 books previous to writing this one, and I enjoyed each one that I read. With this book, he has changed publishers and I don’t know if that has anything to do with it, but he hit one out of the stadium with this book. If his others had 4 star ratings, this one would get 10. Its that good.

If you like quick-paced suspense, then Dr. Richard Mabry’s Stress Test is for you. The novel opens with a bang and the stress on the main character, Dr. Matt Newman, doesn’t let up until the very end. My husband picked the novel up after I was finished, and was soon engrossed in Matt’s struggle — proving this book is for anyone who enjoys a puzzling mystery or a page-turning plot.

What would you do when someone is systematically attacking every facet of your life – trying to destroy you before killing you? Would your meager faith sustain you, or would you trust only what you could see?

That’s the dilemma that Dr. Matt Newman faces, and it’s a fascinating one. From the very first sentence you’re handcuffed to Matt, totally invested in his character and wanting to find an escape from the one trying to ruin him. The plot is very fast-paced and full of action, with death, crime, and hope surgically implanted into every page. This is definitely a book that I’ll be passing off to my husband, for while there is a side romance and emotional moments, this is an action story on every level – of the body, mind, and soul.

I’ve read other of Richard Mabry’s books and I’m always left with knowing that I’ve read a great book, one that was fast paced, centered on Christ and just enough suspense to keep me turning page after page (or flipping pages if you read on a Kindle Fire!). Stress Test was, I think, his best so far – this book gripped me from the first page, literally and had me wondering whodunit through the whole thing, just when I thought I knew who was behind things another twist was thrown and I so enjoyed that! I mean who wants to read a mystery and know who does the bad stuff in the middle, kind of doesn’t make you want to finish, right?

Good book! I really liked that it was fairly fast paced and kept me reading. It is heavy on medical terms and lingo but not so much that I felt the book confusing. Also, there isn’t romance in this book like I’ve found in many of the same kind. Really enjoyed it and even passed it onto my teens to read.

I really liked this book. The action is continuous, right from the beginning. And there are twists in the plot that kept my interest to the very end. Matt is a nice guy, struggling with his nominal Christianity. But along comes Sandra. She is just what Matt needs as she has a strong faith.
Mabry has created believable characters and developed them well. His medical writing is superb. A very good novel.

Stress Test is an action movie for the imagination. Although the first couple chapters are that slow climb setup for the eventual roller coaster ride, the rest of the book is non-stop action. Dr. Matt Newman can’t catch a break, not even for a page, it seems.

There are a lot of major players who play a part in the madness. My favorite was lawyer Sandra Murray, a strong female lead. Not so strong in loyalty but curious to see what happens with her was Matt’s ex girlfriend, Jennifer. Sandra’s ex-boyfriend, Dr. Ken Gordon is a key figure to Dr. Newman’s health. Detective Grimes appears to be a man key to seeing Matt behind bars. It truly is an exhilarating page-turner. Where John Grisham and Scott Turow create legal thrillers, Dr. Mabry owns the medical genre.

I encourage you to pick up a copy of Stress Test, take a deep breath, dig in, and enjoy. Purchase here.

I received an ARC-Advance Reader’s Copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I had been anticipating reading this book for quite some time, because I know from his past books that Richard Mabry writes impressive Medical Suspense. Not only was I not disappointed, I was completely wowed.

I was captivated the entire way through the book. I couldn’t foresee a way for Matt to get out of this mess until the very end. This is important to me, because since I read a lot of Suspense I am often able to figure out how the book will end before I am even halfway done. I believe that Stress Test is Richard Mabry’s best book yet.
