Thankful, Book Two in the Return to Sugarcreek series

New York Times bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray captures the beauty, devotion, and warmth of Amish life in this engaging tale of family, commitment, trust, and love set in the beloved community of Sugarcreek.

Christina Kempf has always known that God chose Aden Reese to be her husband. As children, he was there to save her when she fell through the ice, and he’s been by her side ever since. After his parents died in a car accident ten years ago, the Kempfs raised Aden as one of their own, and everyone sees Aden and Christina as brother and sister. But Christina has never given up hope that Aden will one day ask her to be his wife.

Aden always planned to court Christina. But losing his mother and father changed everything—except his love for her. Her parents generously welcomed him into their home and treated him like a son. He can’t betray their kindness by admitting his feelings for the girl who is like a sister . . . yet so much more.

Pressured by her parents to court, Christina begins to accept the attentions of Sugarcreek’s young men, and now, Aden must make a choice. Will he stand by and watch the love of his life slip away? Or will he risk losing the love and trust of the family he holds dear to tell Christina how he truly feels?

Thankful includes a P.S. section with additional insights from the author, background material, suggestions for further reading, and more.

  • I enjoyed the theme of “thankfulness” woven into each character’s story. Christina and Aden are thankful to finally discover each other’s feelings. Judith and Ben get an answer to their prayers for a baby. There are many reminders through the story not to take anything for granted. You never know what tomorrow will bring.

  • THANKFUL

I love the way this author writes. Getting to go back and see the people we’ve already met in this place is probably one of my favorite parts. Christina and Aden’s bond is special and I love the way it was done. Christina felt the pressure from her family to court. Aden has always loved her and wanted to be with her but being raised as her brother brings problems and mixed feeling about courting her.

  • WEEKLY REVIEWS

Thankful: Return to Sugarcreek, Book Two was sent a little while ago to review. I was excited because I had read the first book in the series “Hopeful”. This book was no disappointment from the first book in the series. It is a story line that completely stands alone from the first, so anyone can pick this up and read it without reading the first book. This book has companion characters from the first but nothing direct. Christine has long had a crush on a childhood family friend whom she hopes will notice she has grown into a young women. She works hard as a waitress to try show her strength and responsibility until he claims to be with a English women. She is devastated and resorts to healing old wounds to provoke his feelings. This is an easy read and great for a beginners.

  • THANKFUL REVIEW

I just finished reading the book “Thankful” by Shelley Shepard Gray. This is book two in the Return to Sugarcreek series. Unfortunately, I did not read the first book (“Hopeful”) but fortunately, it didn’t matter. This book could definitely stand alone.

I really enjoyed this book. This is of the Amish romance genre so if you’re looking for something along those lines I’d recommend this book or the series. In this book Christina and Aden both have feelings for one another but neither one wants the other to find out, out of fear of rejection.

I liked the characters in this book and I liked the story. It was interesting and kept my attention and was a fairly quick read which I like. I would recommend this story as well as the author.

  • THANKFUL BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

Aden loves Christina. Christina loves Aden. Neither one know that. Age separates them at first, but Aden is content to wait. Then circumstances change. Contemplating a future with each other wouldn’t be bad until Aden’s life changes. When Aden’s parents died, Christina’s family took him in and raised him.

Aden does a good job at stifling his emotions and desires to court Christina. So many times in the book I wanted Aden to pour out his feelings to Christina. Especially because Christina felt the same way but thought he didn’t care in that way for her!

Family values are one of the things I most enjoy about Amish fiction, and Thankful is a well-crafted story of family, commitment, trust, and love. Fans of Amish fiction will “for sure and for certain” love this story.

  • This is a wonderful book filled with so much storytelling. There are several different plots weaved into one great story. I really have enjoyed all of Shelley Shepard Gray’s books. The characters are always full of life and relatable. Although this is the second in the series, you could read this one alone. Of course, reading them in order is always more fun as you get to “check back in” with older characters. I definitely look forward to the next one in the series!

  • GREAT AMISH STORY!

My favorite characters where Judith and Ben who have been wanting children, but can’t have any of their own. They decide to adopt and the their social worker asks if they would be willing to foster a baby whose mother is in prison. This part of the story is based on truth as many Amish families are doing just that in real life. I love seeing Judith grow inher faith and in maturity as she takes this precious baby into her home.

I am not hugely into Amish fiction.but this book interested me and I decided to give it a try and I am glad I did! The characters were likable and engaging, not too over the top or unrealistic as some characters tend to be. I thought the author did a good job with keeping the story light and yet engaging. For any lovers of Amish fiction this is a must read!

  • ANOTHER GOOD ONE

I enjoyed Shelley Shepard Gray’s Thankful. First and foremost Amish Fiction books are my favorite and Shelley Shepard Gray is on my must read list. Shelley Shepard Gray writes with authority on the Amish ways, Sugarcreek and other Amish cities, running a restaurant, adoption, and the Amish Faith. The three stories are bound together by the main idea of being thankful. As I read this book, it really challenged me to see all the things in my life that I need to be thankful for and how focusing on that does make you truly thankful. I found myself needing tissues as I read because so much in this story touched my heart. I found myself unable to put this book down until the end.

I felt such strong emotions while reading Thankful and found myself mentally rooting for Christina and Aden to show their love…I truly think this book is a gem! I also loved The other side stories about adoption and the restauranteur ready to retire.

  • THANKFUL

As an adoptive mom, I found the thread of trauma in the story very interesting. Christina was showing off as a child, and fell through ice in the local pond. Aden rescued her. The family celebrates every year, although it makes both Aden and Christina uncomfortable. Also, Christina still has nightmares, but she doesn’t tell anyone about them. A lot of parallels can be drawn to the adoption world there.

  • REVIEW – THANKFUL BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

Despite being under 300 pages, Shelley Shepard Gray cleverly squeezed in three different plots; Christina and Aden’s love story; a married couple (Ben and Judith Knox) struggling to adopt a child; and Jana Kent, the owner of Sugarcreek Inn, finding love again. Thankful is heartwarming story about faith, love and family. I more than enjoyed reading the second installment in the series and I’m looking forward to reading book three, Joyful.

There is nothing better than a book that once you start, you can not put down! This was the first book by this author that I have read and it won’t be the last!

The author takes you back to Sugarcreek and to the continuing story between Christina and Aden.

She does a terrific job describing the characters and writes at a pace that will keep your attention.

Here is a bit of her writing style. “Hand in hand they walked back to the house. Christina couldn’t help noticing that the snowflakes no longer seemed ominous. Instead they were simply pretty reminders of the miraculous changes that had taken place between them.”

If you enjoy reading Amish novels, then I highly recommend this book. I think you really enjoy it.

What really kept me captivated in this work was the secondary storyline of Judith and Ben. This was a very sweet romance and a quick read. Christina and Aden are raised as siblings but felt differently for each other. There were also two other stories interwoven in the pages of Aden and Christina’s romance. Jana worked at the Inn Christina works at and she’s looking for mostly retiring, and Judith is wanting to adopt a baby but might ended fostering one. A very quick read, short and satisfying.

I enjoyed getting to know Christina and Aden and as theirs was the main story, it was good. The other stories were good as well. If you are looking for a good Amish story, then consider Shelley Shepard Gray’s THANKFUL.

  • THANKFUL BY SHELLEY SHEPPARD GRAY

The characters in Thankful are warm and the type that you can’t help but feel a connection to and find yourself rooting for things to turn out the ‘right’ way. The story moves easily between characters and their stories and progresses nicely. One nice thing is that the characters from the first book, Hopeful, returned in this story – some simply in the background, and others finding their story continue to progress. I always love to continue to watch stories evolve for those that you came to know in another book – it makes me feel somehow complete. The main story could have been set almost anywhere and with any community of people, with it’s universal theme. I liked that the book was more about the story’s characters and their lives, rather than being about them being Amish.

In addition to Christina’s story, readers will also enjoy the stories of Judith and Ben, an infertile Amish couple who decide to take in a foster baby, as well as Jana, a widowed restaurant owner who is ready to slow down the pace of her life and look for love again. All three women are at different stages in their lives and have some difficult choices to make. It was interesting to read about how their lives intertwine and yet each has to find her own path. I could relate to Christina’s longing for someone to love her, Judith’s yearning for a child, and Jana’s reassessment of her priorities during middle age.

  • THANKFUL BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY | WIN THE FIRST TWO BOOKS IN THE RETURN TO SUGARCREEK SERIES!

I enjoy reading Shelley Shepard Gray’s novels as she has a style of writing that is so easy to get into and it feels as if I come to be a part of the story, and her latest novel, “Thankful,” is no exception. Christina and Aden started out as neighbors and friends; friends whom had a crush on each other. When Aden’s parents were killed in an accident, Christina’s parents took in Aden and raised him as a son; however Christina and Aden, unbeknownst to each other, do not think of each other as a sibling, they are in love with each other. This book is a sweet love story that touches on many relationships of various types and the resounding theme throughout the book is being thankful. This is a quick read and one that Amish fans and fiction fans in general will enjoy.

  • BEING THANKFUL IS THE THEME IN THESE CHARACTER’S LIVES BUT WILL THEY SEE IT?

I absolutely love the theme of thankfulness appearing in uniquely different ways through these three situations with the characters in Sugarcreek. It reminds us that we need to take time in our busy lives to be truly grateful for all our blessings, even the not so perfect ones as Shelley reminds us. Life is simply too short to think we will be granted with the possibility of a tomorrow and God reminds us that thankfulness is something that we should practice more often throughout our day. Shelley also includes a recipe for Peanut Butter Pie and a Reader Discussion guide at the conclusion as well as a sneak peek into book three coming soon. I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars and can’t wait to go back to Sugarcreek again soon!

  • There were some cute moments as Aden tried to deny his feelings and Christina felt sure he didn’t have romantic feelings towards her. I liked the other two story lines, too, as an Amish couple decide to be foster parents to a baby whose mom is in prison and an English widow who owns a restaurant realizes she needs to get a life outside of work and just might find love again. It’s so easy to focus on the negative and what we don’t have instead of all the blessings we do have. I loved how this book showed characters learning to be thankful in spite of difficult circumstances.

  • THANKFUL BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY #REVIEW AND #GIVEAWAY

This is a wonderful story about Amish families becoming foster parents for different reasons, trust, and love. We tend to view the Amish as distant but they are just as human as the rest of us. Their families are as warm, commited, and devoted to each other as lots of English families are. I really enjoyed being able to read about some of the other characters I had read about in “Hopeful”, the first book of the series. I like that there is more than one story going on in the town of Sugarcreek. I can’t wait to continue the series to learn about Ben and Judith’s continued quest to have children and to see if Jana continues to move on in her life. I feel as if these characters are my friends and I can’t wait to see what else transpires in the “Return to SugarCreek” series.

Of course, I also enjoyed the getting to the end part. I was so proud when Christina finally decided to confront her fears and get on with her life!

  • Thankful, Book Two in the Return to Sugarcreek series was a nice and easy read. I love these books. No super thinking – just like watching a movie in my head. I’ve been reading Amish books for a couple years now and I still love them! Shelley Shepard Gray is a great writer and the reader always fells like they are right there in the story. I did not read the first book in this series but there is no need to. Each book tells it’s own story. Thankful actually has three stories in one. I liked how the author goes back and forth between the three stories.

  • THANKFUL BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY | BOOK GIVEAWAY AND BLOG TOUR

This story touched my heart to the point I had to keep a box of tissues in my lap while reading the book. In fact it did not take me long to read the book because I refused to put the book down until the very end.

The story had so much to offer me as a reader. It was tragic, romantic and it had dedication to family and community. Lessons were learned in trusting God without fear and to pray He for Him to lead us to the life He has planned for us.

  • REVIEW & GIVEAWAY | THANKFUL BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

I absolutely love love love the Return to Sugarcreek series!
I loved book 1 “Hopeful” so much and wasn’t sure what to expect for the second book. Let me say it exceeded all of my expectations!
I immediately fell in love with Christian and Aden. I love that they struggled in their feelings for each other…I just love stories like this!
There is also the story of another couple hoping to adopt a child….there were so many ups and downs along the way for them.
Thankful is appropriately titled, because that is exactly what the take-away from this book was for me personally. Things happen in our lives, some good, some bad…but through it all, we can always find something (maybe very small) to be thankful for.
I cannot wait for the next book in the series!!! Though this is a series, you can read and enjoy Thankful as a standalone.

  • GREAT READ

This truly is a book of love, love of a family who raised another child (Aden) as their own, love of children who made Aden their own, and a deeper love between two friends.

The Amish hold such deep respect for one another, and this is what holds Aden back, what will he do? Where will Christina’s courting lead?

  • THANKFUL

Sugarcreek is a lovely setting with interesting and good folks. The Inn is a nice place to visit, its owner, Jana, believes she will never find love. Their stories pull on your heartstrings as they face their fears. I enjoyed this book.

  • “THANKFUL” BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY

This was really the hook of the entire plot for me: would they be willing to face their fears, dig into deeply buried emotions, and find healing so that they could charge off into uncharted romantic territory?

I really liked Aden and Christina. There was something vulnerable about them, aside from their buried pain, that made them extremely likeable. Mix in that they’re friendly, kind, and generous, and you had characters destined to be winners.

  • THANKFUL BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY REVIEW & GIVEAWAY

I was lucky enough to read book one, Hopeful, and I am so glad that I was able to read this book as well. This story made me think about how my parents had an open door policy and they accepted who ever came through their door. Unless they got between us siblings. I also thought about how my parent knew my siblings spouses, and my spouse, before we did. One of my brother in laws was my mom’s paperboy, and the other was her boss! I wonder if when they had them as friends if they wanted to have them as kids in law. However this story is a little different then mine, because Aden lived with Christina’s parents and they treated them like brother and sister. It was interesting to read how the other characters in the book were oblivious to how they felt about each other.

  • THANKFUL

I was so ready to return to Sugarcreek so when Thankful arrived I could not read it fast enough.
I liked book one in the Return to Sugarcreek series Hopeful but this one was fantastic it can be read as a stand alone.
You will learn one main thing from this book, Follow your heart. Enough said right?
The main characters Christina and Aden are so easy to like and their story was a good one.
Don’t miss Gray’s latest Amish fiction.
You don’t want to miss Sherry Gore’s recipe in the back of this book. ( Peanut Butter Pie) Yummy!
I can’t wait for the next book Joyful in this series.
I gave this book 5 stars and I recommend it.
I was given a copy of this book by the publisher for my honest review.

  • THANKFUL BY SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY

Cassandra’s Review- An Amish story at its best. The author writes the characters true and on point, so it is easy to fall in love with them. I am going to read other works by this author as well. I would recommend this book to adults and older teens as I do not feel it would suit a younger reader and they would not connect well or stay in tuned.
