Finding God in life’s hardest moments

Kara Tippetts chronicles her difficulties and triumphs, offering hope to everyone who hurts

Seattle: Life can be a roller coaster, with unexpected twists and turns. But when things go wrong and you enter a freefall, how do you cling to grace in the midst of fear and disappointment? In her new book, The Hardest Peace: Expecting Grace in the Midst of Life’s Hard (David C Cook/October 1, 2014/ISBN: 978-0781412155/$15.99), Kara Tippetts challenges readers to trade anger for joy in the most challenging moments of life.

Tippetts knows the ordinary days of mothering four kids, the joy of watching her children grow . . . and the devastating reality of stage-four cancer. In The Hardest Peace, she doesn’t offer answers for when living is hard but asks us to join her in moving away from fear and control and toward peace and grace. Most of all, she draws us back to the God who is with us, in the mundane and the suffering, and who shapes even our pain into beauty.

Within the book’s pages, Tippetts looks at her life through the lens of the seasons found in Ecclesiastes chapter three. Chronicling her seasons of childhood hurt, love in marriage, heartbreak in ministry and devastation in illness, she asks this question: In the worst pains of life, is Jesus really Emmanuel: God with us?

“I never expected to be planning my funeral and fighting for my next breath in my 30s,” Tippetts confesses. “I never expected to be sitting on my daughter’s bed with the sinking feeling her mama was going to die of cancer and not of old age. This is my own testimony of what is broken and ugly being made right and redeemed. The brokenness of today causes us to look at hope for tomorrow.”

While her story includes a long battle with cancer, The Hardest Peace holds wisdom for all who have met what Tippetts calls the “hard edges” of life. Whether it’s a marriage you didn’t expect to fall apart, a job you thought you’d never lose or a rebellious child, everyone will come face to face with at least one of these moments.

Growing up in a strict home with a father prone to anger, Tippetts rebelled in her teens. After drugs, alcohol and men left her empty, she finally surrendered her life to Christ. However, her walk with the Lord continues to deepen and change. “Before cancer, I would have said I was on the journey of seeking grace, but in truth I was manufacturing my own faith,” she reveals. “My going, doing, loving, was my faith, not my nearness to Jesus. In the depths of my illness, I was able to set aside my striving and look for God’s presence in my suffering.”

As her journey unfolds in The Hardest Peace, Tippetts challenges each reader to find God’s grace in their own story by exploring five questions at the end of every chapter. “I am not the first to write from the grip of cancer. I am certainly not the first to write on suffering,” admits the wife of a pastor and mom of four. “Many have done so before me with more clarity and understanding. I come to you in these pages as a broken woman, realizing that my brokenness may be my greatest strength — that it may be the greatest strength of us all.”

Tippetts adds that ultimately The Hardest Peace is not a book about trying to “win” at having the hardest story, but about one broken woman who is on the journey to know peace in the midst of hard.

Advance Praise

“Losing myself in the startling light of Kara’s story, I have found who I am, who He is and more of the meaning of every breath.”

~ Ann Voskamp, New York Times bestselling author of One Thousand Gifts

“Kara writes honestly about a subject that few of us want to confront. She even manages to find humor in the midst of a horrifying situation. Most importantly, she points readers to the hope that is found in a God whose grace is sufficient for every trial, and whose love for His children is steadfast even in the face of despair.”

~ Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family

“Kara Tippetts’ book The Hardest Peace is at the same time deeply convicting and encouraging. Kara is brutally honest in sharing her struggles all the way from a young girl to now as a mother of four battling recurrent cancer. Through it all, she has found the deep reality of God’s grace and love. This is a book everyone ought to read.”

~ Jerry Bridges, author of Trusting God Even When Life Hurts

Suggested interview questions

— The Hardest Peace tells much of your personal story: You were diagnosed in 2012 with cancer, and to say it has not been an easy road is a gross understatement. How has having a terminal illness impacted the way you view life?

— Who did you write The Hardest Peace for?

— What is the hardest peace?

— Since your diagnosis, you’ve gone through chemotherapy and radiation. How have you dealt with some of the side effects of the treatments — like losing your hair for example?

— Being ill has caused you to have to reevaluate your priorities, even in housekeeping. What has that looked like for you?

— How has your journey affected your marriage and your relationships with your family members?

— You say in The Hardest Peace that you actually pray for the woman your husband might marry after you’re gone. How do you find the grace to do that?

— Your children are still so young. How do you talk to them about your illness?

— How have friendships played a role in helping you and your family in this journey?

— You talk in The Hardest Peace about making an idol out of time. What did you mean by that?

— You grew up in a very performance-based household, with a father who was prone to anger. How have you come to peace in your relationship with your parents?

— The Hardest Peace shares your story, but so many people are walking difficult paths of their own. Do you think people can identify with what you’ve written?

  • HOPE…FAITH…REDEMPTION

Raw, transparent, emotional and honest, “The Hardest Peace”, is an honest look at following Christ when life is at its hardest and most emotional.

Written at a time when Kara Tippetts is facing some of lifes harshest realities, what makes this book both heart wrenching and inspiring, is the fact she doesn’t face just daily struggles, but struggles that includes a battle with cancer.

However, her story stands out as she shares with honesty and grace, a passion for Christ, and an acceptance that no matter what, as she shares on page 113, “It takes courage, humiliating courage, to step aside from your own sovereignty and imagined control and begin looking for the gift that comes unmerited. Yes, I’m talking about grace. Grace by definition is the gift that comes unearned.”

The Hardest Peace was very well written, inspiring, encouraging and challenging. I cried more as I read this book, then any I have read this year. Her journey is not over yet and I am just amazed at the strength this woman and her family have. God has definitely used Kara and her family through this book and will continue to do so for a very long time.

  • BOOK REVIEW: THE HARDEST PEACE, BY KARA TIPPETTS

The common theme of the book centers on the idea that, he hardest peace is fixing our eyes on what is unseen. The hardest peace is believing that “though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials, these have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”

This book is a mist read for anyone enduring struggles in their current season of life.

  • THE HARDEST PEACE

This is a book full of faith and love and determination, even in the face of, well, devastation. Words cannot express how deeply this book touched me, and really helped me to put my own life in perspective. I think anyone could benefit from reading this amazing book. At times both heartbreaking and heartwarming, it’s the kind of thing you just can’t stop reading. I honestly as I type these words feel like crying all over again. The sheer strength that Kara has in both her faith and herself has been a true inspiration to me.

  • PEACE IN THE HURRICANE!

I would recommend this life changing book especially to anyone who has cancer and they are looking for some guidance during this difficult time. Even if you don’t have cancer, this book covered the important topics of having peace during life’s challenges. If you feel like you’re spinning in a hurricane that’s completely out of your control, then this book is written for you. Peace is obtainable and God can give you His incredible peace. I appreciated how Kara Tippetts was very honest and real about her feelings on having cancer. She called cancer as a gift which was an enormous surprise to me. Cancer isn’t something that I would declare a gift and she had a great perspective. She learned to enjoy life to the fullest and to cherish every single moment with her husband and her children.

  • THE HARDEST PEACE (GIVEAWAY)

Kara Tippetts’ The Hardest Peace speaks to this idea of good-hard: “But the redemption of my hard yesterdays,” writes Tippetts, “gives me a softened heart to walk in my tomorrows” (35). She has a very different way of telling her very real version of living with Stage IV cancer, alongside her husband and four children. I’ll be honest: it’s a hard story to read sometimes, and entering into pain isn’t always my first choice of literature (or of life for that matter, let’s be honest). But she doesn’t leave us hanging, because instead she hopes. She lives and breathes and clings to Hope for really, it’s all we have left at the end of the day.

I love the honesty in her words and I love how she made me think about how I go through life, even though I have nothing traumatic happening right now. • BOOK REVIEW: “THE HARDEST PEACE” BY KARA TIPPETTS

Most of us have had the experience that one moment we are spiritually skipping along; the next moment we are staring into the gaping jaws of affliction. Those moments can be devastating. They come up hard and fast and, sometimes, they do not leave. What do we do? Well we can either let this whirlpool keep spinning and eventually drag us down or we can identify with Christ’s suffering and then let His peace take over. This is what Ms. Tippetts calls The Hard Peace. This is an extraordinary story and for those of us who go through these experiences this is the book that was written to help us in our moment of trial. If you or you know someone who is facing a moment of intense hardship then get this book for you or for them.

  • THE HARDEST PEACE: EXPECTING GRACE IN THE MIDST OF LIFE’S HARD

Tippet says that brokenness is not to be feared, but rather to be received humbly. She affirms unwavering faith in the midst of crushing blow after crushing blow. For her, faith is faith in the moment, for we cannot count on more than this moment. She says, “hard is often the vehicle Jesus uses to meet us, point us to that peace, and reach us grace.”

I have been going through a hard time right now with my fibromyalgia and back issues and reading this book really gave me a greater outlook on suffering. Although she has cancer which is far worse than the things I go through, I never felt like she was making her suffering look bigger than others. The advice and encouragement she shared through her real life circumstances where like healing balm to my soul. I would highly recommend this book to anyone in any stage of life. • PLEASE PRAY FOR KARA

I think this is the hardest book I have ever read. My heart is still grieving and my tears are still flowing.
Kara is a young mother who shares her cancer story. She shares how she is realizing she never really had faith or knew what grace was until she is facing day to day life knowing cancer is growing and spreading throughout her body. My mother’s heart just broke when she describes trying to make the best of each moment with her children. I will continue to pray for Kara and her sweet family. May God give them peace and comfort as they face this battle.

  • Kara Tippetts opens her heart and her mind honestly and truthfully to bring us in to her life, beginning with childhood up through her continued struggle with cancer. Her confessions and stories are difficult to read at times, but consistently coupled with the strength she receives from her spirituality. Her story is a true testament to the power of believing in a higher being and releasing all seemingly impossible things to that being. She uses the names God, Him, Holy Spirit, and Jesus. She often quotes the Bible. This may seem religious or dogmatic, but the message comes through so clearly, and I think anyone who lives their life connected to a higher being can benefit from her story.

  • OPEN, HONEST, AND REAL

Kara writes about her life in her struggle with cancer and dealing with the fact that she may well die from it… from in the middle of the struggle. From right in the center of the hard.

There are no cheap easy answers here… nor are there any false hopes. There’s no pretending that it’s easy…. or that faith and tears can’t coexist.

It’s real, honest, and open… and I pretty much guarantee tears.

And though my very hard place is completely different from her very hard place… I find it comforting to have the honesty and the openness… when so many seem to want to close the doors and hide the hard places from view.

But Kara also shares that she is able to trust that whatever happens in her story, whether she lives or whatever she dies, that the story is good and beautiful.

Kara Tippetts and her family are walking through a valley that no one ever wants to go near. They are daily in the shadow of her death, yet they live with a light and grace about them that only God could bring. Reading this book has showed me how I’m wasting my days and moments, especially the small moments that are really the biggest. I highly recommend this book, along with a box of tissues. The Hardest Peace will change your heart.

  • EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!

I read this book in one sitting. I couldn’t do it any other way. And I’m not sure I have the words to express the impact this book has had on my mind and my heart. In the introduction Kara says,

Read Kara’s book. It will change the way you approach your days…the good ones and the very, very hard ones.

  • THE HARDEST PEACE

Wow, this book was amazing. I loved how brutally honest Kara was about her struggles with cancer, she did not try to sugar coat anything or try to make herself sound amazing, she was real and for that I really appreciated this book. This book gives great insight to what a cancer does to ones life and yet how even in the darkest of times God is there and is taking care of you.
I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

  • THE HARDEST PEACE BY KARA TIPPETTS

This is an incredible book of courage and faith. It is an inspiration to anyone facing a hard time, whether it is cancer, marriage or job related. This is by far the best book I’ve seen on suffering, realizing what God is doing, and finding peace in it all. It is truly an amazing book.

  • BOOK REVIEW: THE HARDEST PEACE BY KARA TIPPETTS

I almost did not sign up for the blog tour for this book because I knew it would be hard to read. Parts of it were hard, but I’m glad I read it. Kara presented a balance of fear, faith, and grace in “The Hardest Peace.” It would do us all good to stop and consider her observations about life.

  • BEING HUMAN IS VERY GOOD, AND VERY HARD.

There are so many reasons why this book should be read.
Read it because Kara tells the truth about the good and the hard. She’s honest about what frightens and what redeems.
Her story involves the harshness of chemo and the desolation of lonely radiation treatments, and her story encompasses dancing in the kitchen with her daughters and snuggling goodnight with her son.
It’s a reminder that being human is a good, good thing- and it’s a hard, hard thing.

  • BLESSED BY BOOK!!!

Kara reminds us of letting go of the ‘idol’ image we have created of what our life should look like and for our need to trust Him. She reminds us of the importance of showing BIG love in small; every day moments… it all matters. Every single minute.

This book is a must read for everyone. It is not another ‘cancer’ story.

  • “THE HARDEST PEACE” BY KARA TIPPETTS {WITH GIVEAWAY!}

“I’m so weary of my own story I could run away.” Just reading those words makes me feel like crying. I have certainly felt that way at times, and I know many others who have, as well. Does anyone’s life story play out the way they expect? Sometimes in the pain and uncertainty the ability to run away, even temporarily, would be most welcome. But this isn’t a book about running away. It’s a book about looking at life’s difficulties and knowing: “…If God has called me to this hard story, His promise is one of sufficient grace.”

  • REVIEW & GIVEAWAY | THE HARDEST PEACE BY KARA TIPPETTS

Kara’s story hits home for me. I’ve lived it in ways and I’m still living it…it’s a wonderful, hard-to-read account of one woman’s journey towards the hardest peace.

We may not have cancer, but the clock is ticking on our time here and what we do with that time is more important than we can possibly imagine. This book encouraged me to live life to the full. To value the moments with my family. And to remember what’s most important.

  • {{BOOK REVIEW}} THE HARDEST PEACE BY KARA TIPPETT

I’m not sure I have the words I need to correctly describe the impact that this book has had on me. Kara has such a way with words, with life & grace and that is something rare in our world.

Though she’s fighting stage four cancer, this book is far more about faith and life than it is cancer. I recommend this book to everyone. Anyone struggling with their own battles in life will greatly benefit from reading this book.(Click the link to my blog for the full review)

  • THE HARDEST PEACE

The author guides us down her personal path of growth towards a peace that passes all understanding and in doing so, she hopes to encourage us to view our own path to peace a little differently. Each of the chapters in the book are very heartfelt tear jerking moments. There are also times that you will laugh till your sides hurt. I found myself agreeing with her numerous times on her views. Her faith seems very unwavering and I really liked that most about her. In the midst of her pain and trials she is able to shine!

  • HEARTBREAKING, YET FILLED WITH HOPE

I usually stick to light-hearted reads in both fiction and non-fiction. I tend to have what they call a tender heart, and sometimes the empathy is almost too much to bear. But something drew me to Kara and her story.

I won’t lie. It is absolutely heartbreaking.

But, even in the midst of it Kara shares a faith, a hope, and a peace. The kind of peace the Bible tells us about in Phil 4:6-7. Peace that surpasses all understanding. The kind of peace that Jesus gives us that this world cannot take away.

And as a person who suffers from depression–that disease that attacks our very spirit and hope–I am just in awe of someone like Kara who can keep on keeping on, and spend every moment she has in joy with her family. I have been reading the book, and also her blog at Mundane Faithfulness.
