The Heart’s Pursuit

A jilted bride desperate to save her family from ruin.

A bounty hunter seeking vengeance for a ravaged past.

An arduous trek toward justice—or redemption.

Silver Mattlock and Jared Newman know traveling together is a bad idea. Bad for Silver’s already tarnished reputation in her small Colorado town. Bad for bounty hunter Jared’s secret, single-minded mission for revenge. But Silver is determined to track down the rogue who left her at the altar and stole the last remnant of her father’s fortune. And Jared’s in a hurry to hunt down the murderer who destroyed his family—even if Silver is too distractingly beautiful for comfort.

The pair takes off over mountain and desert, past bleak homesteads and raw mining towns, hot on the trail of the two villains who took what wasn’t theirs to take. Soon supplies dwindle, secrets emerge, and suspicion leave Silver and Jared at odds when they need each other most. To confront an enemy deadlier than desert rattlesnakes and rocky cliffs, Silver and Jared must learn to forgive and trust and face the question they haven’t dared voice: What happens next?

Press Release

The danger of a heart gripped by revenge

Hatcher’s latest release explores the insidious consequences of anger and bitterness

Seattle: When your heart is filled with a lust for vengeance, is there any room left for love? In her latest release, The Heart’s Pursuit (Zondervan/May 13, 2014/ISBN: 978-0310259275/$15.99), author Robin Lee Hatcher examines issues of the heart that all of us will eventually face: forgiveness and the desire for justice — or even retribution. “Everybody has been hurt by someone in their lives.” Hatcher says. “Some wounds go very deep, others stay on the surface, but they still affect the heart.”

Hatcher acknowledges she isn’t a stranger to some of the themes in The Heart’s Pursuit. “Yes, I have been so hurt I wanted revenge and found it difficult to forgive. An important distinction to remember is that we are not required to feel forgiveness. We are simply commanded to forgive as an act of obedience. We forgive because God tells us to. We forgive because He first forgave us.”

The Heart’s Pursuit tells the story of two desperate characters hot on the trail of the villains who have harmed them. Silver Matlock is a Colorado beauty determined to track down the rogue who left her at the altar and stole the last remnant of her father’s fortune. Bounty hunter Jared Newman, as rugged as the West itself, is relentless in his pursuit of lawless men but somehow unable to escape his own tragic past. Hardened by life, he now seeks out the murderer who destroyed his family.

Despite the fact it would further damage her already tarnished reputation, Silver joins forces with Jared and the two take off together across the bleak homesteads and raw mining towns of the “Wild West.” At first, Jared is drawn to this beautiful woman whose drive for justice equals his own. But as supplies dwindle and secrets emerge, suspicion keeps Silver and Jared from trusting each other fully. Hatcher says their story will remind readers that dishonesty is an enemy of any intimate relationship, whether platonic, romantic or familial.

Like so many who have been hurt by others, Silver and Jared must face the answer to this question: Will vengeance and payback heal their wounded hearts? “It is my opinion that most often we hold onto anger and bitterness because we have the mistaken notion that it will somehow hurt the person who hurt us. The truth is, that person probably isn’t giving us a single thought,” Hatcher reveals. “Holding onto anger and bitterness isn’t hurting them; it’s hurting us. Forgiveness isn’t really about the person who offended us at all. It is about us. We are made better, healthier and cleaner when we forgive those who have wronged us.”

Readers will undoubtedly be drawn in to this wild ride across the American frontier. Yet best-selling novelist Robin Lee Hatcher, a winner of the Christy Award for Excellence in Christian Fiction, is optimistic that those who close its covers will have found more than just enjoyment. She hopes the lessons her characters learn throughout the course of the story will ultimately bring her readers one step closer to God.

I really liked the storyline in this new novel by Robin Lee Hatcher. I have always loved her stories and look forward to new books. This is a novel of suspense, faith and trust. Two people lost and trying to find their way, is it meant to be that they will find that their lives actually are meant to be together? Or are they not able to trust each other? I give this book a 4/5. I was given this book by The Litfuse Publicity Group and all opinions are my own.

  • THE HEART’S PURSUIT BY ROBIN LEE HATCHER, A REVIEW

The Heart’s Pursuit by Robin Lee Hatcher is a great novel. The storyline keep you in suspense. It is just crazy. I loved that the author kept the story moving. I am giving 5 stars! It deserves more, but for the sake of my review, 5 stars it is. The story kept me wanting to keep turning the page, I wanted to read more about Silver, and who Jared is. I am so glad the author showed that a man and woman can keep it platonic till their wedding night.

  • TYPICAL BUT FUN READ

I’m glad she shared how much the heroine’s actions would have ruined her reputation and embarrassed her family. The things the heroine did would not be questioned at all in the 2000s but in the late 1800s they were very scandalous.

Overall it’s pretty typical. I was just waiting for the heroine to get in a life threatening situation and sure enough – she did. I think she matures through the story, but her faith stays the same.

Since they are traveling for most of the story the supporting characters change frequently, but fill in when they are needed. Love the Pinkerton agent! The descriptions of trail travel are good and give a clear picture of what they were going through.

  • THE HEART’S PURSUIT REVIEW

This review is for the book “The Heart’s Pursuit” by Robin Lee Hatcher. I am very familiar with Hatcher’s work and I really enjoy her writing style. This is a romance novel set in the 1800′s. Silver is a woman who has just been jilted at the altar, and her fiance has sped off with her family’s wealth. In desperation she hires a bounty hunter, Jared Newman, to find her fiance and the money. The trip they have to take is dangerous and full of obstacles.

This story is well-written and full of suspense, faith, romance and adventure. If you enjoy historical novels you will certainly enjoy this one by Robin Lee Hatcher. I recommend it to you.

  • THE HEART’S PURSUIT REVIEW

I enjoyed this book. I felt like it started out a little slow for me, but the plot picked up toward the middle of the book, and the ending was good. The storyline was interesting, and I liked how the two main character’s separate goals end up intertwining as the book goes on. The characters were likable, though I would have liked to read more of the characters’ histories, to get to know them better…

Note: I received this book for free from Litfuse in exchange for a review on my blog.

  • I always enjoy books by Robin Lee Hatcher and this one was no exception. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the storyline. I thought one or two things were a little too unrealistic (like an honourable man agreeing to have a single woman accompany him unchaperoned on a trip of any length – during that day and age). There is one other thing I thought was unrealistic but it would involve a spoiler, so I’ll leave that one out.

  • THE HEART’S PURSUIT BY ROBIN LEE HATCHER

The Heart’s Pursuit is a fun and enjoyable read! I really liked Silver’s spunky and determined attitude and the way she wasn’t going to let anyone stand in her way. Robin Lee Hatcher does a fantastic job of so vividly describing the desert as well as the mountains and rocky cliffs along the way. I always enjoy set in the Colorado mountains, and the scenes in this book gave me the feeling of being there with the characters. There are a lot of twists and turns here, some intense emotions, but Sliver and Jared are determined to stay focused on what their mail goal is, and nothing would stop them! And in the end, what will become of these two? Ms. Hatcher weaves these situations together to give readers an ending that will warm your heart!

  • A BLOG TOUR AND REVIEW

Robin Lee Hatcher has been writing historical fiction for several years, and by her own admission, The Heart’s Pursuit was a bit of a departure for her. That intrigued me and I am so glad I had the opportunity to review this book. From the get-go, my attention was caught and kept strongly with each page read. There is mystery, intrigue, twists and turns, and family dynamics to understand and of course romance, something for everyone and a book that will have you wanting to read more from Hatcher.

  • EXCELLENT

There is a lot of action, the romance is ‘clean’ and some of the happening are downright sad and awful, but as with all of Robin Lee Hatcher’s stories, there is a moral to the story, and something to be learned.

  • “THE HEART’S PURSUIT” BY ROBIN LEE HATCHER

The Heart’s Pursuit will make you saddle sore and bone weary after traveling along with Silver and Jared – but nothing will keep you from finishing the journey to the very last page. Hatcher masters the difficulty of the open trail in this western saga of love and forgiveness. She makes clear just how very hard it was for anyone to be alone in the mountains, but especially the trail troubles for women – and how crucial a good horse was.
I really enjoyed this story, and the characters – along with the fantastic natural setting – were the reason why. Silver and Jared were each hurting but recognized the good in the other. Throw in a spark of attraction and altruistic reasons for why they needed to keep their distance, and you have a scorcher of a story.

  • THE HEART’S PURSUIT

Reputation is not the #1 priority for Silver as she rides out with Jared, a bounty hunter, to track down the low life bum who jilted her. No, she did not want to haul that snake back to the altar. She wanted to recover what he had stolen from their family. If she can’t find him, they would lose bother their home and family business.

But all said and done, they both are focused on their goal of getting their man. Will they manage to get both men and recover the fortune that Silver’s dirty skunk of a fiance’ stole?

Thank you, Ms Hatcher. I enjoyed this book every bit as much as I’ve enjoyed your other books I’ve read.

  • BOOK REVIEW: THE HEART’S PURSUIT

Ms. Hatcher has woven a wonderful story of two people who are motivated by the need to put right the wrongs that have been done to them, and end up finding happiness. While they were overcoming many obstacles, we get to learn a lot about the characters of the two people. The author also does a great job keeping the setting true to the time and place and there was enough action to make me want to keep reading. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Hatcher, but I look forward to reading more.

This book was different than most historical romance books I’ve read. Silver’s determination to find her former fiance and return her father’s money is one to be admired. Robin hit the mark again with this book. I am a fan of historical fiction set in this time period so it was a fun and quick read for me. The characters were very well developed and Robin has a way of making you feel as if you were a part of the story. To me this book had a sense of adventure and kept me turning the pages. I really liked Silver and her tomboy type of attitude. • REVIEW: THE HEART’S PURSUIT

I always enjoy Robin Lee Hatcher’s writing because she infuses her interesting storylines with character depth, attention to detail, and spiritual insights – and The Heart’s Pursuit is no different. Set in 1873, this story beautifully captures the flavor of the Old West as Jared and Silver travel across the countryside and small towns in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada. Robin has a gift when it comes to settings and her vivid descriptions conjured up images from TV westerns that I watched growing up.

There has not been a book by Robin Lee Hatcher that I have not loved. Her style of writing is just simply amazing. While this book is a bit different in the era of what she writes, the storyline drew me right in and I just could not get enough.

  • NICE HISTORICAL WESTERN

I figured out the plot pretty quickly of how this would all tie together, but regardless, it was still an enjoyable book. I enjoyed the historical western theme of the book and the main characters were very likable and I found myself cheering them on.

  • THE HEART’S PURSUIT | ENTER TO WIN A $200 “ROMANTIC WEEKEND GETAWAY” FROM @ROBINLEEHATCHER.

This was an excellent story about a bounty hunter and a jilted bride. The characters were really well done, even though a bit stubborn in their own way. Jared is a rough and hardened man who has no need for women in his life but somehow finds himself falling for the woman who hired him. Silver is the jilted bride who hires a bounty hunter to find her fiance who stole her father’s money. Great story that I thoroughly enjoyed!!

Jared’s past was an interesting part of the story. He became a bounty hunter specifically to find the man who murdered his family. Along the way he’s tracked down a lot of other people, but this man has always been the focus. Until he met Silver he didn’t even know the man’s name. Now with a better chance than ever, Jared plans to go after Carlton even if it means leaving Silver and her search for her fiance behind.

  • I was pleasantly surprised by some unexpected twists. I thought the romance was a bit thin as they didn’t talk much or know that much about each other, but they were able to see who the other person was pretty clearly from all they went through, so it didn’t feel like a complete stretch. Forgiveness and choosing not to hate were important themes in the story.

  • I really enjoyed the adventure as Silver and Jared pursued the two outlaws. The story never seemed to slow down too much, and I liked Silver and Jared as main characters.
I thought the faith aspect of this book was done very well. The spiritual themes are clear, but they are woven throughout the story and in the characters’ lives in a way that made it realistic.
The novel clearly makes the point that there is a distinct difference between seeking justice and seeking revenge, and that ultimately, forgiveness and redemption rest in God alone.

  • THE HEART’S PURSUIT, BY ROBIN LEE HATCHER

Robin Lee Hatcher’s latest novel takes us back to 1873 and the emerging west. It’s a time when fortunes could be made and lost overnight by both hardworking pioneers and unscrupulous con men. Silvana ‘Silver’Matlock’s entanglement with one of these fraudsters means that her family could lose their business. Her stepmother also fears the loss of the family’s reputation. When she sends Silver to stay with relatives in Denver, the jilted bride takes matters into her own hands.

At times, The Heart’s Pursuit reads as though it’s part of a series. There are backstories regarding both Silver’s sister and one of Jared’s previous bounties that could be turned into individual books. It is, however, a stand-alone novel. I’d say that The Heart’s Pursuit is a good way to pass a summer’s afternoon.

  • While the plot of the book sounds like a Hallmark western, Robin Lee Cook’s great prose helps the story avoid all the typical cliches that are found in many western romances. Yes, there is a lot of drama throughout the book, but with rich characters and an intriguing plot, I quickly devoured all 320 pages in one sitting. Overall, The Heart’s Pursuit is a well-written romantic western and one of Robin’s best novels.

  • THE HEART’S PURSUIT BOOK REVIEW

This was truly a good shoot them up kind of cowboy story with some romance thrown in for good measure. I have always been a sucker for the cowboys and the shoot outs and this one has both!

There is plenty of action all around when Silver and Jared team up to hunt down the same men for different reasons and along the way they pick up a third person who seeks revenge as well.

It’s a really good story plot that will keep you glued to the book until the end. It’s an ending that you always expect from Robin Hatcher and she doesn’t disappoint us in this book either.

  • THE HEART’S PURSUIT

THE HEART’S PURSUIT is a fast read… short chapters. At first I thought maybe Ms. Hatcher had sat down and watched a western on TV because that’s the way it started. But it didn’t end up that way. Add a run-away bride, a stolen fortune, a desperate bounty-hunter, and you have the story. This definitely isn’t my favorite book by Ms. Hatcher, but it is okay. I would recommend it for fans of westerns, historicals, or Ms. Hatcher.

  • GOOD NOT HER BEST

I really enjoy Robin’s writing because her stories have meaning and more depth than others. This book, while I enjoyed the idea, the characters I didn’t like as much. The thought of a woman running off with a bounty hunter in search of a man is funny as well as obviously difficult at the time. Hatcher does a good job at portraying the difficulties of riding for weeks on a horse in every kind of weather. I thought there were too many story lines going on throughout the book. One story would get started and I would be getting into the little plot line and then all of the sudden it would be over and on to the next. Because of this the entire story seemed really rushed and the ending not as strong. That being said, this book is humorous with a dash of romance on the side.

  • THE HEART’S PURSUIT BY ROBIN LEE HATCHER

If you suspend reality for the time being and pretend this might really have happened, it’s an entertaining old west story. I couldn’t really believe that a girl like Silver, even with her somewhat wild ways, would take off with a man on such a quest, knowing that it would entirely ruin her reputation. Past that, though, it’s a fun chase after a mysterious killer who may or may not be tied to the man who left Silver at the altar and took off with her parents’ life savings.

  • THE HEART’S PURSUIT

The Heart’s Pursuit was a thoroughly enjoyable read! There are some pretty deep and troubling crimes that happen throughout the novel, but never once does the book get overly gruesome or dark in the descriptions of the events. I was able to read this book very quickly and enjoyed the short chapters. That made it easy for me to set the book down and attend to other things, then easily jump right back into the story. I also really liked the cover. It has beautiful colors and a really neat texture.

I am quite fond of Robin Lee Hatcher’s novels and “The Heart’s Pursuit” just reinforced that fact. The plot got off to a quick start and hit the trail quickly. The protagonists were excellently portrayed and by the end of the book I felt like I knew them and had journeyed alongside them.

Robin Lee Hatcher’s writing talents are not confined to one genre and The Heart’s Pursuit is a delightful novel set in the Old West. The story contains all of the aspects you would expect in such a setting but it is much more than dusty trails, rough personalities, and burgeoning towns. Hatcher has created compelling characters with wounded hearts and upended lives who wrestle with issues that transcend time and location.

Robin Lee Hatcher is one of my favorite Christian authors and she did not disappoint in her newest novel, The Heart’s Pursuit!

This book takes off with a bang with the main character being jilted at the author and hiring Jared to help her find him. The action is fast paced and the old west town setting are ones I usually like. It was a clean fiction read where each character needs to learn to trust the Lord again. Fast moving and uncertainty of happenings, it was hard to leave them behind when I needed to close the book. I liked the interaction and private thought throughout the story. In an unusual circumstance for both of them, Jared has his own motive, tracking another man he has sought for years. Silver is unaware of this parallel search. The author is very descriptive of their travels through three states in the hot months of 1873. Sleeping on the ground, a lame horse, sparseness of food and hunting for game, constant travel in the heat, brings the story alive as they press forward. The drive is so great with Silver, to regain what she feels is her fault for her family’s financial loss. Jared has lost his family by the man he is tracking. Both, unknowingly, pursuing healing in their hearts.

I’ve read several of Robin Lee Hatcher’s books in the past, including Beloved, and A Promise Kept. So I was familiar with her novels before reading The Heart’s Pursuit. Out of all the novels that I’ve read written by Robin Lee Hatcher, I’d have to say that this one if definitely my favorite! I really enjoyed this book and was glad to have had the opportunity to read it!

This novel is a rather light, quick read. I was able to read it in two sittings, and enjoyed how the story flowed. I loved how it was a western novel, as I’m from Texas and love a good western novel with a country heroine. I really liked how the story-line wasn’t too complex, but it wasn’t boring either. There was plenty of western type scenes with guns, horses, wide open land, and outlaws that kept my attention.

She may have been abandoned at the altar, but Silver is no damsel in distress. He may be from the South, but his scars have nothing to do with the War.

Saddle up for a wild ride as you accompany Jared and Silver to a stabbing, 3 shoot-outs, several saloons, and countless dusty miles on horseback from Colorado to Nevada and back. You’ll meet good guys and bad guys, and along the way, the duet becomes a trio with the addition of orphaned Dean, a child facing the same demons that Jared is.

Robin manages to wrap it all up and put a bow on it, leaving the impression of a happily ever after in the end, so you’re willing to overlook the occasional unlikely occurrence. This was a fun read, and I’ll be on the lookout for her other works next time we’re at the library.

I have long been a fan of Robin Lee Hatcher’s books and this is no disappointment. I loved it. I really and truly could not put it down. I, of course, am overly curious and couldn’t wait to find out what had hardened Jared’s heart and knew from the beginning that I wanted Silver to end up with him. I especially liked how Silver’s father finally decided he wore the pants in the family with her stepmother and made things better at home for Silver. And don’t forget the little boy Dean. Such a young one for such hardship. And of course, the bad duo. Glad they got what they did.

The Heart’s Pursuit was well written and engaging. There were times it could have been dark and gory, and I deeply appreciated the author not going into those details while still managing to convey the villain’s dark side and crimes. The heroine, Silver Matlock, was a strong-willed, yet enjoyable character who had a hard time following orders. Against my better judgement (and to the detriment of my dirty laundry pile) I read this book in one day! While this was partially because I’m behind on reading, it was mostly because it was such a fun book to read. I’m beginning to feel that Christian Western romance is one of my favorite genres.
