Keepers of the Covenant, Book Two in the Restoration Chronicles

The Old Testament Comes to Thrilling Life in the Latest from Lynn Austin

In one life-changing moment, the lives of the Jewish exiles in Babylon are thrown into confusion and despair when a decree arrives from the king’s palace in Susa. It calls for the annihilation of every Jewish man, woman, and child throughout the empire on the thirteenth day of Adar, in less than one year. Ezra, a quiet Jewish scholar and teacher, is suddenly called upon to lead the community as they seek God for a reason for this catastrophe. When a second decree arrives, authorizing them to fight back, Ezra is thrust into the role of military leader as they defend themselves against their enemies.

When the battles come to an end, Ezra’s brother Jude is dead and Ezra is required by the Law he so diligently studies to marry Jude’s widow, Devorah, and provide an heir. Fatherhood changes Ezra, and he asks God to make a way for him and the other exiles to leave Babylon for good and return to Jerusalem. His prayers are answered and the exiles move to Judea to revitalize worship at the temple–but the fight to keep God’s Law is never easy. As more and more of his community are tempted, a new battle emerges…this one for the survival of God’s covenant and the souls of His chosen faithful.

About Keepers of the Covenant:

In their darkest hour, where would hope be found?

In one life-changing moment, the lives of the exiles in Babylon are thrown into despair when a decree from the king’s palace calls for the annihilation of every Jewish man, woman and child throughout the empire in less than one year.

Ezra, a quiet but brilliant scholar, soon finds himself called upon to become the leader of his people. Forced to rally an army when all his training has been in the Torah, he struggles to bring hope in a time of utter despair, when dreams of the future — of family and love — seem impossible.

Austin weaves together the struggles and stories of both Jews and Gentiles, creating a tapestry of faith and doubt, love and loss. Here, the Old Testament comes to life, demonstrating the everlasting hope displayed in God’s unwavering love for His people.

About The Restoration Chronicles:

The Restoration Chronicles bring the books of Ezra and Nehemiah to vibrant life, telling the stories of Babylonian exiles: the few faithful followers who struggle to rebuild their lives in obedience to the God who beckons them home. The series follows biblical characters like Zechariah and Ezra as they bring hope to God’s people in a time when dreams of the future—of family and love—seem impossible.

The first release in the series, Return to Me, released in October 2013.

  • EXCELLENT BIBLICAL FICTION

Historical Biblical fiction can be tricky, but when done right, as I feel Lynn does, it really helps me to place myself in the times. They Jews didn’t know the future as we know how the story ends. They had to live through it and it required more faith than I could possibly imagine right now.

Placing myself in their shoes helps me to think more carefully about my own faith. Highly recommended!

  • KEEPERS OF THE COVENANT

Keepers of the Covenant by Lynn Austin is the second novel in The Restoration Chronicle series. This novel depicts biblical events that are mentioned in the Books of Esther, Ezra and Nehemiah

The author carefully and thoughtfully intertwined fact and fiction that allowed the reader to be enthralled and captivated by the story she was telling.

I have read Return to Me (which is the first book in the series) and was excited to read this second installment and knew it would not disappoint.

This novel depicts the life of Ezra, the Scribe who is chosen to lead his people. After victories and hardship, loss and new found love, Ezra has been called upon God to reveal the truth of His Word to His people and lead the Judean exiles living in babylon to their home in Jerusalem.

As you read of Ezra and his many experiences you will also be engaged by the story of Reuben, who is a young man of 14, who considers himself capable of withstanding the duties and responsibilities of a man. The story of Amina, which really tugged at my heart strings. She is a young Babylonian girl who is considered a good for nothing cripple by the man who should have cared and loved her the most, her father.

This book has many exciting and unexpected twists which made this novel and exciting page turner. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Biblical and Historical fiction. I hopefully await a third installment of The Restoration Chronicles series.

  • BOOK REVIEW: KEEPERS OF THE COVENANT

Often I have thought of this story in the nice clean Sunday School version that talked of hanging Haman and Esther rescuing her people. The fact that they still had to defend themselves and many were killed during the process is not really something they like to talk about in a room full of 3rd grade girls. Let’s talk about pretty Queen Esther and how she lived “for such a time as this.”

As I read through Austin’s book and then went back and read the biblical account, it left me with the stark realization that this was not a neat and tidy Sunday School event that it is often portrayed to be. Instead it is another beautiful story of God’s judgment wrapped in grace and mercy. Austin is a masterful storyteller who brings to life the real stories in fictional context.

This book has sparked a number of thought-provoking discussions between my Wednesday night Bible study Leader and myself. I have not read the first book in the Restoration Chronicles Series, but I plan to as soon as I get free time. Even though there are 2 in this series, these books do work as stand alone novels. Lynn Austin has an amazing gift for creating historical biblical fiction. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read, this book is well worth your time and your money.

  • SECOND INSTALLMENT IN “THE RESTORATION CHRONICLES” SERIES

I really connected well to this novel. There were different sets of Biblical characters whose parts moved great along with novel, in my opinion. I hadn’t learned a lot about those Biblical characters before; my mind was opened more to their roles in the Bible as a result of reading it. It was interesting to me the way the different characters intersected into the lives of the other characters. I hadn’t gone too deep into the events of the Thirteenth of Adar yet so I was happy to learn more about those events through this novel.

  • KEEPERS OF THE COVENANT

This book is amazing! I love how the series really breathes life into the Old Testament stories, making one really stop and look at the people in the Bible and realize the similarities between them and ourselves. I think it helps to make the Bible stories more applicable in our lives when we see them in a new life, since (obviously) they are there for a reason, to help us to grow closer to the Lord.
Keepers of the Covenant is a hard book to put down! With amazing characters that come to life and rich historical detail, this book will keep you up late.
Lynn Austin is one of my favorite authors, since she truly knows how to weave an engrossing story!

  • CHARACTERS, ATMOSPHERE, DETAIL, AND EMOTIONS.

For me, novels are the best way to cement the historical facts in my head *and* spark my imagination at the same time. Lynn has the ability to take me back to a time I could never experience except through pages, and make me care deeply about people who were birthed from her creative mind.

A final word: the book of Ezra culminates in a powerful and terrible decree- every Jewish man who took a pagan bride must send her and their children away, to cleanse the land from idolatry.
I wondered how Lynn would handle this. She does it with sensitivity and honesty, showing us how torn they must have been, yet she stays within the realm of possibility. I can imagine a scene like she described really happening. I hope it did!

  • GOD IS FAITHFUL

The author’s characterizations and her choice of characters made the people and this time in biblical history come alive. While there are several themes, the one that touched me most was the theme of faith in God, which includes God’s faithfulness to mankind. True biblical faith believes in God and who He is as revealed in Scripture and in our life experiences no matter if we can sense Him near or if we can understand His working. It means staying true and obedient to Him even if it’s the hardest thing we’ve ever done.

No matter what genre, Lynn Austin is a masterful storyteller and exquisite writer. Her lyrical prose and characterization immediately capture my attention, her ability to paint word pictures literally puts me into the scene – and with The Restoration Chronicles series, Lynn makes an unfamiliar period of Israel’s history shine with its compelling relevancy for today. I like a lot of people, don’t always find the old testament riveting. It’s not exactly hold your breath hear comes something exciting. I have to say that I really enjoy Lynn Austin as an author and have always loved to hear that she’s come out with a new book. This book does not disappoint me. It’s a great read. It reads like fiction but is based on history, on the Old Testament to be exact. Ezra was never a book I paid any close attention to, but now I find myself going back and re-reading it. Looking for how the book and the chapter of the Bible are the same or where they differ. Great way to get people into the word and give us a history lesson as well.

  • KEEPERS OF THE COVENANT BY LYNN AUSTIN – REVIEWED

Lynn Austin has written a beautiful story of love and grace using the Old Testament book of Ezra as her foundational building block. She weaves the rich history of the Jewish culture into every aspect of her story, and she builds her characters’ lives into a believable community of relationships that become concrete in the reader’s mind and heart. The culture of the Jewish people, the Laws and the Torah that governed their lives, the many enemies that came against them time and time again, God’s chosen people represent so much of the mercy and grace that came to earth in the person of Jesus in the New Testament.

  • KEEPERS OF THE COVENANT BY LYNN AUSTIN | #REVIEW, AUTHOR CHAT, & #GIVEAWAY

Lynn Austin’s well written, well researched biblical fiction has reignited my interest in the book of Ezra. This second book in The Restoration Chronicles opens in Babylon, the year 743 BC. Jews who had chosen to remain there during the first deportation under King Darius are later forbidden to leave under new rule. To their shock and dismay, Haman issues a decree bearing the seal of King Xerxes that in effect is a death warrant for all remaining Jews. This decree encourages citizens to kill and plunder their Jewish neighbors on the thirteenth of Adar. Those familiar with the story of Queen Esther will appreciate the view from the other side of the palace walls. The events that transpire on that fateful day are the catalyst to this story.

  • KEEPERS OF THE COVENANT

This is a long and troubling area of conflict that has been going on even before a lot of us were even born. I wonder if somehow through the ages if the meaning and manner have gotten all disturbed to represent one or more people’s views and not God’s, so that they may benefit from this ongoing struggle for power.

I don’t profess to know how or why this all started but as knowledgeable and educated as we are today, I just don’t get why men from each nation can’t just sit down and figure it all out. OR maybe that is the exact point, they don’t want a peaceful solution. I can only hope in time something will happen to make this all seem so absurd that they will have to agree!

This is a novel that I would give 10 stars if I could. Brilliant writing that brings the Bible stories to life in a way I never imagined. Lynn Austin keeps close to Scripture but makes the characters so very realistic. I never before felt like I understood the Bible like I did while reading Keepers of the Covenant. “If we deny God, our lives aren’t worth living.”

I feel smarter after reading Lynn Austin’s books, I really do. Especially with her latest series, The Restoration Chronicles. She has the incredible talent of packing her novels with historical research that would make my grad professors proud and yet not drowning the reader or overwhelming them. It’s the perfect blend of a master storyteller and bringing to life the Old Testament…

In this ample novel (475 pages!) we follow Ezra as he leads the Jewish people. I really enjoyed watching the story of Esther unfold from the perspective of a Jew in the land and in the sights of persecution and facing death.

  • KEEPERS OF THE COVENANT, BY LYNN AUSTIN

Keepers of the Covenant faithfully follows the book of Ezra, culminating in Ezra’s decisions regarding mixed marriages. Ezra is called to lead his people according to the instructions in the Torah, including the commandment that no one should marry a Gentile. This could have personal consequences for Ezra’s family, and his search of the Torah for answers will eventually bring him closer to God. This is a main theme of the book, as well as the subjects of prayer, trust and faith. There’s a message that God is working for us, even if we cannot see Him in action.

  • THIS BIBLICAL NOVEL WILL DRAW YOU BACK INTO THE STORY OF THE EZRA FROM THE BIBLE!

This is such an exceptional book that follows the biblical books of Esther, Ezra, Jeremiah and Nehemiah in breathing life into the struggles that befell the Jewish people that were stuck in exile in Babylon when they refused to leave the first time. This novel takes those books of the Bible and expands on them as if you were literally there when it all happened. That is what makes this novel so amazing to read for me. It’s historically accurate following the biblical outlines provide from the Bible and casting a set of characters for us to support and follow all the way to the end. Easily a flawless 5 out of 5 stars.

  • ANOTHER GREAT BOOK FROM LYNN AUSTIN! WORTH THE WAIT!

I am a HUGE fan of Lynn Austin and her Biblical fiction books, especially the first book in The Restoration Chronicles series! I have been waiting patiently (or not!) for the second book, Keepers of the Covenant, to come out since I LOVED the first one!

And the wait was well worth it! Keepers of the Covenant was just as good as the first one and told a great, mostly unknown story of Ezra. It was extremely interesting and really made me go back to my Bible afterwards and re-read the story of Esther and Ezra and the return to Jerusalem by the Jews.

  • INSPIRING OLD TESTAMENT STORYTELLING

It is evident Lynn has studied the Old Testament accounts and done her research on customs of the time period. Then she has added well-thought-out characters and events as they could have happened to help her readers feel a sense of personal connection with the time and place of the stories.

It was eye opening to me to think of weaving together the stories of Esther and Ezra as Lynn did in this book, but it seems to be a very plausible fit to the Old Testament timeline.

  • I love when there are multiple story lines, with the story of Ezra, Reuben, a teenage Jewish boy at the time of the battle, and Amina, a crippled Edomite girl taken in by the Jews after the battle. There’s a couple sweet love stories, along with so much history and study of the Torah it almost feels like you’re taking a class! This book really made the Old Testament stories and people come alive.

  • KEEPERS OF THE COVENANT

These three threads of the story are woven together in a well-crafted tale that tells a fictional story of Ezra. The story is well-written and the characters’ feelings and emotions easy to relate to. The plot moves along at a good pace, and the chapters are usually fairly short so they’re easy to read. Ezra at times was very legalistic and I liked how he was able to listen to the wise counsel of his wife as well as how he remained strong in his faith and courageous in standing up for what was right.

I have always been a huge fan of Lynn Austin so I was excited to read her newest book in the Restoration Chronicles series. Overall it was just as well written as her other books, but I did not find the characters as engaging as some of her previous works. The storyline was strong and it had a lot going on which was good, but I wouldn’t say this was one of my favorite works by Ms. Austin.

  • KEEPERS OF THE COVENANT BY LYNN AUSTIN

Biblical fiction has never been my favorite genre’, and is something I rarely read, but I have always been impressed with Lynn Austin’s Biblical fiction, and am always eager to read it when it comes from her pen. Not only is she a master at this genre’, thus far she has written about people and times in the Bible that most Biblical fiction authors doe not write about.

This is the second book in the Restoration Chronicles, set in the time of the Jewish captivity. This book starts out with the plot of Haman to have all of the Jews slaughtered. Although Esther is not in the book, her role is mentioned. For the first part of the book, it deals with the reactions of the Jews as they hear the news that they will be slaughtered and on what day. And then the second edict comes saying that they can defend themselves.

I have loved reading Keepers of the Covenant. I was intrigued and fascinated by the story line. The characters are many, and varied, all with depth to them. We, through the characters, experience a variety of emotions. From fear when they first hear of the King’s edict, (can you even imagine what it would have been like to hear that you where going to be killed soon?!), heartache at not being able to protect your family, to joy and relief when the new edict is published.

Biblical Fiction has very quickly become one of my favorite genres (when written by the right person) and I have to say that Lynn Austin has to be one of my favorite Biblical Fiction authors! The way she writes just brings you into the story, brings the characters alive, and refuses to let you put the book down! Keepers of the Covenant, though book two to a series that I do not own, grabbed my attention from the first paragraph and it was very easy to follow. The cover is beautiful and I loved how the plot unfolded. I also enjoyed reading this story through the point of view through two children in addition to the adults, it gave you a new perspective.

  • REVIEW: KEEPERS OF THE COVENANT BY LYNN AUSTIN

Thank you LitFuse for this review copy.
Lynn Austin brought so much insight into the time of the return to Jerusalem from Babylon in Return to Me, I didn’t even need to read the book description before I signed up for this blog tour. I just knew Keepers of the Covenant was going to be good. I was right. Lynn Austin can write about ancient Jewish history like no one else I know….

The correlation of life in Babylon for the Jews and life in modern culture for Christians is very thought provoking. I learned more about the Jewish and Babylonian cultures, but I also found myself thinking about some circumstances in my own life as a Christian and as a homeschooler. If you like deep thought provoking books, Keepers of the Covenant is an excellent choice.

  • GOD IS HIDDEN BEHIND THE SCENES IN THIS STORY

I love how the book opens with Haman. I thought the story would be just another Esther tale, but oh, was I wrong! Lynn Austin is a masterful storyteller – one of my favorite Christian authors, with such compelling historical fiction.

The prophet Ezra is brought to life, as a real man, husband, father, shepherd, and teacher. His struggles are real and he is an example to all followers to pray and seek God for guidance and follow the Biblical teachings uncompromisingly. Woven in this masterful story is a Bible lesson so clear and unmistakable that I cried as it unraveled as it revealed where I need healing and how I have failed and what I need to change to reconcile myself with God.

Once again the pages of the Bible come to life in vivid color in Lynn Austin’s newest installment in The Restoration Chronicles…Keepers of the Covenant.
This book is a wonderful journey back in time to the days of Ezra. This is a dark time for Gods people, but also a glorious time.
The setting, the characters the voice and life of this time in history is so alive on the page.
I’ve always loved the story of Esther, but I really love seeing it in the light of Ezra’s perspective. He really is a remarkable character…scholar turned warrior.
If you feel that the stories of the Old Testament are a little old, a little outdated, a little dry- I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of this book and let it ignite a flame of new passion within.

  • A FANTASTIC ADDITION TO THE SERIES!

I have to say…Lynn Austin knows Biblical fiction. My goodness, the study she has put into this book and the research is amazing. When a book makes me want to go and read more on the subject, it is a win-win.

I feel in love with the first book in this series. Each character was unique and each offered a different point to the story. In Keepers of the Covenant, the theme continues. Each character was unique and offered something special. Each played an important part in telling the story and non the characters were flat. You either rooted for them, hoped they would turn away from what they were doing, or would learn to listen and understand. You could feel the emotions and understood the frustrations and also enjoyed the happiness with them.

  • IT IS THE STORY OF FAMILY AND FAITH

I am amazed at how much detail Author Lynn Austin puts into her historical novels. This is a story of hope even when there seems to be no point to it. It is the story of family and faith that everything will be okay. The lives of so many will never be the same after the king has started the annihilation of every Jew to be finished in less than a year. Lynn Austin has written another story of God’s love. I give this book a 4/5. I was given this book by Litfuse Publicity Group and all opinions are my own.

  • BRINGS THE BIBLE TO LIFE

Before, when I thought of Esther, of course I acknowledged how great it was that God saved His people, but I’ve always seen it through Esther’s eyes. Seeing how the Lord saved his people through Esther from the perspective of the Jewish people scattered throughout the Persian Empire brought tears to my eyes. And really, the 13th of Adar is just the beginning of the story told in Keepers of the Covenant.

  • We all know the story of Esther. Wicked Haman, King Xerxes, yada yada. This was a story set during that time period from the perspective of other Jewish people in the empire. I’m embarrassed to say, it had never occurred to me that the Jews had known of their coming death months in advance. How terrifying! I saw so many parallels between the fear of the people after Haman’s edict went out, and the horrifying predicament of the European Jews in World War 2.

Instead of the queen’s eye view in the story of Esther, we get the experiences of the common people. Those who are scared, not just for themselves, but for their families. Ordinary people working, eating, living… all in the face of a coming death sentence.
