{More about The Face of the Earth}

When Mitchell Brannon’s beloved wife of twenty years kisses him goodbye one autumn morning, he has little idea that his life is about to change forever. Mitch returns from work early that evening, surprised Jill’s car isn’t in the garage. Her conference in Kansas City is only a few hours’ drive from their little town of Sylvia, Missouri. But her voice on the answering machine makes him smile. “Hey, babe, I’m just now checking out of the hotel, but I’ll stop and pick up something for dinner. Love you.”

Mitch sets the table with their best china and lights some candles, looking forward to their first weekend as empty nesters.

But at eight o’clock, the candles have burned to stubs and Jill still hasn’t shown up. Mitch tries her cell phone only to get her voice mail over and over again. Their two college kids haven’t heard from their mom either.

At midnight, Mitch’s irritation turns to dread. And later, when the police and Missouri Highway Patrol have turned up nothing, the Kansas City hotel calls to say they’ve found property belonging to Jill in a hotel maid’s possession.

Mitch enlists the help of their next-door neighbor, Jill’s best friend, Shelley, and together they search for clues to Jill’s disappearance. As days turn into weeks and weeks into months, Mitch and Shelley’s friendship grows ever closer—and decidedly complicated with Jill as the tie that binds them together. Just when Shelley decides to finally reveal her feelings for Mitch, a clue to Jill’s whereabouts is uncovered. But every lead seems to be a dead end, and Mitch wonders how he can honor the vows he made to a woman who has seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth.

Author Deborah Raney pens a wonderful story of love, loss & letting go. Letting go of our own will and letting God walk with us through difficult times is sometimes the most difficult journey but leads us in to HIS will and that is the BEST place to ever be!

  • INTERESTING CONCEPT, GREAT WRITING

This book deals with a tough question that most of us don’t have an instant answer to – if your spouse were to just disappear without a trace one day, how long should you stay alone? When, if ever, is it okay to let love back in? Obviously this book was a little different from the normal ones I read, and while I didn’t absolutely love it, I still enjoyed it and found it quite fascinating and an enjoyable read…

The characters are ones you will care and want the best for. What does the spouse of a missing person do about a future relationship? I have to say this book brought tears to my eyes more than once, I sympathized with each of them. It’s very well written and the mystery isn’t solved until the end. A wonderful read!

  • “THE FACE OF THE EARTH” BLOG TOUR

In this novel, I got so involved with the characters and with the search for Jill that it was almost as if I knew them. I don’t normally read books with this type of storyline because of the emotional involvement, but this one intrigued me so much that I wanted to know what would happen. Bottom line, “The Face of the Earth” was a great read. It was sometimes hard to read for different reasons, but the writing and the story were excellent.

This is the first of Ms. Raney’s work that I have read, but I will be looking for her earlier novels. The suspense of the story kept me glued to the book from beginning to end. Mitchell and Shelley sound like real people with real temptations. The tension of their feelings for one another is compelling.

  • TROUBLE WITH THE IDEA

The tension builds immediately – and continues throughout the book. The Face of the Earth by Deborah Raney is a mystery that pulls the reader in from the first chapter. It made me stop and question – what would it be like to have someone you loved deeply just disappear? How could someone just drop from the face of the earth? Mitchell Brannon’s wife Jill called from a hotel in Kansas City, three hours away, and said she was starting for home. She never showed up. I had trouble getting my mind around the idea. How can someone just disappear without a trace?

  • LEARNING TO LIVE WITHOUT

A story that makes you think…all that we take for granted. No matter who in your family doesn’t come home, there is a sense of panic. Going around for about a year with no answers has got to be heart wrenching.
I could not imagine my husband’s voice on our answering machine, saying he would be home shortly, and then vanishing with no trace. What length would you go to to find your loved one?
We find Mitchell Brannon’s wife Jill showing up in unexpected ways…but where is she? Will Mitch make it through this trauma. What will happen to his college age children?? How do you deal with school when part of your family is missing. Did Jill take off of her own free will? Where is she?
It becomes a real page turner trying to see where the answers are going to come from. I highly recommend this

  • THE FACE OF THE EARTH BY DEBORAH RANEY

This novel is a study in the character of a husband wanting to remain faithful to his wife and the vows he made, even when she has been missing for months. Other character studies include the adult children and the divorced woman next door who has had eyes on her best friend’s husband for some time.
It is a question thousands must face each year as people go missing. And it is a messy question. How do you remain faithful for months and months when temptation is staring you in the face?

  • THE FACE OF THE EARTH

The general plot of a person gone missing is a fairly common one. the outcome of course can vary and the conclusion then still has some variables. What was unique about this disappearance and search was the focus on a happy marriage between Jill and Mitch. The ideal couple, yet Jill is missing. As the book progresses we see that things aren’t always perfect, just like in most marriages, but God was at the center and it showed greatly in Mitch’s love for his wife.

  • EMOTIONAL & AMAZING MYSTERY

This is one of the best mysteries I’ve read in a long time. There was so much emotion in this book and it took me from one end of the spectrum to the other, all in a believable way! Mitch’s and Jill’s marriage is really good so when she goes missing, we, like Mitch, are sure that something horrible has happened to her. I like a dramatic mystery and this one certainly is that!

  • YOU COULD ACTUALLY FEEL THE EMOTIONS. OUTSTANDING!

The Face of the Earth is a edge of your seat mystery that left me wondering till the end. I knew HOW the story would end about 1/2 way through but I wasn’t sure exactly what would cause the ending if that makes sense. The story moves slowly and yet has enough intrigue and emotion that I didn’t want to put the book down. I loved how both of the main characters stayed true to their faith and how Mitch stands up for what he knows is right in the end. It made the relationship that forms in the story even more believable.

  • I LOVE NOVELS THAT MAKE ME THINK!

I love books that make me think. This is the type of novels that leaves you pondering things even after you finish the last page. I really liked how the story ended because it brought closure to everything. I also appreciated the realistic struggles that the hero and heroine had. This author does a good job with stirring emotion in the reader and making hearts ache as well as rejoice. There were just enough “we think we’ve found out what happened” scenarios to make it seem suspenseful, even though it wasn’t a suspense novel. There was also a mystery element to the book. It would be hard to sit around waiting when the trail seems to grow colder by the day. Half the beauty of reading the story is not knowing the outcome until close to the end. I really enjoyed this story.

  • A NOVEL THAT DEALS WITH A SITUATION NONE OF US HOPES TO EVER FACE!

This was such a compelling novel for me to not want to put it down until I knew what the outcome would be. In fact, I had to fight myself several times to not rush to the back of the book to find out more than half way through because the suspense was killing me. I forced myself to wait it out simply because like people who experience this kind of nightmare for real, the answers aren’t found simply by going to the end of the book. They have to painstakingly live through it minute by minute. I am thankful that Deborah Raney decided to come up with a conclusion for this novel instead of simply leaving it as Jill never coming back and leaving the reader to come up with their own conclusions on what happened. Thank you, thank you for that!

  • THE FACE OF THE EARTH

The Face of the Earth is a completely compelling novel. From the moment I started reading until I turned the final page, I couldn’t read the book fast enough. I ached for Mitch and Shelley (especially Shelley) as they dealt with the disappearance of and search for Jill … and as they fought against the feelings they developed for each other. I also appreciated that I had no idea how the novel would turn out. Would Jill be found alive? dead? or never found at all? I won’t spoil the end for you, but I will say that I thought it was realistic and perfect.

The Face of the Earth by Deborah Raney is one book that you’ve got to read. Wow. Wow. Wow. I started it in the morning and could not put it down until I finished in late afternoon. • THE FACE OF THE EARTH

Deborah Raney did a remarkable job of depicting natural and believable reactions to an event like Jill’s disappearance. From the initial shock of her family and friends, their grief, their desperation to find her, refusal to believe she might not be alive, and guilt over any pleasure they might find during her absence, every emotion was realistic and moving to me as the reader. There were several directions the author could have taken for a conclusion but I believe she chose the logical solution.

  • HOLD ON WITH THIS ONE!!!!

I’ve only read one other book by Deborah Raney, but I can tell you this…I am a fan! Deborah is a master storyteller who weaves emotion into her stories that the reader can almost feel. She presents characters that seem so real that you immediately find a connection that grabs you from the beginning and doesn’t let you go until long after you have turned the last page. In The Face of the Earth, Raney presents a story that engulfed me from the first paragraph. The tension and suspense was enough that I was literally sitting on the edge of my chair turning pages faster and faster at certain points. The plot twists and turns and ups and downs and the ending…oh you’ll just have to read it yourself!

  • BOOK REVIEW: “THE FACE OF THE EARTH” BY DEBORAH RANEY

How far do you have to go to keep your marriage vows? “The Face of the Earth” explores that question. It also explores the special friendship that exists between women. Then there is the mystery. Mitchell Brannon’s wife doesn’t come home. Despite an investigation she just cannot be found. If she is gone does that mean his marriage is over? Ms. Raney gives us a mystery as to what really happened to Jill and what will happen between Mitchell and Shelley. “The Face of the Earth” deals with relationships and is so well balanced to keep it from becoming really depressing which in the hands of a lesser author would have become. All the characters are likable and Ms. Raney has a way of making the characters lives very real so that we feel that we are living the moments with them.

Wow, this was an amazing story. I could not imagine what it would be like to expect your spouse to be home by a certain time and not show up and seemingly vanish off the Face of the Earth. This was a very well written book that captured the emotions of a tragedy like this right on the money. And then when Mitch and Shelley started having feelings for each other, I was so glad that they never acted on those feelings. This is a story that is going to stay with me for a long time. I found myself wiping tears and also smiling. Through it all, GOD’s love is evident. Great book that I highly recommend, if I were giving this book stars, it would far surpass a five star review. • REVIEW: THE FACE OF THE EARTH

In a non-preachy manner this book looks at what fidelity means in a Christian marriage and at what point the bond of marriage is broken. It is a book about people of faith, about churchgoers who pray, but it is also a book about very real, very human people. I enjoyed this book, which I received through Edelwiess and recommend it. Grade: B+.

  • FACE OF THE EARTH

Face of the Earth is a beautifully written and heart-wrenching story that deals with a very scary subject. I loved the ending. I felt like I got closure and was happy with the conclusion of my journey with Mitchell and his family.

  • THE FACE OF THE EARTH BY DEBORAH RANEY

The storyline in The Face of the Earth is unique and compelling. What would you do, how would you feel if your best friend, wife or husband just disappeared? This book would be an excellent selection for a book club as there are no right or wrong answers to these questions. I really enjoyed Mitch Brennan as he never gave up on his wife, his kids or his life. The poor man was haunted and broken but He laid it all at the Lord’s feet. I truly couldn’t put this book down.

  • THE FACE OF THE EARTH BY DEBORAH RANEY BOOK REVIEW

Deborah Raney has written a book that is something that no one else would want to deal with. Deborah has Mitch real, so real in fact, that you feel every dilema he faces everyday. I give this a 5. I loved it.

I have to admire Mitchell’s dedication to his wife. How many other husbands would not only keep looking and searching but also be able to withstand the temptation of the other adult who loved his wife so much? Mitchell’s love for Jill shines brilliantly in his actions in this area, as well as many others.

  • THE FACE OF THE EARTH DEBORAH RANEY~~A LITFUSE PUBLICITY GROUP BOOK REVIEW, BLOG TOUR AND GIVEAWAY

I found this story to be a realistic look at what a family might go through in a similar situation. The worry, the frustration, the despair, and then giving the situation to God, knowing He is ready and able to listen to and comfort His children. I found the characters to be realistic and very likeable people who could very possibly be next-door neighbors. As I read, I became emotionally attached to the characters and experienced many of the same ups and downs that they had.

  • The Face of the Earth by Deborah Raney was a very interesting read. It really made me think about what I would do in the character’s role. The story was believable and I’m sure has happened more than once. It’s an easy read. A mystery, although not a suspenseful one. If you like nice easy reads and are looking for something to read this summer check it out!

  • ANOTHER GREAT READ FROM DEBORAH RANEY

Deborah Raney is an author whose work I have been reading for years. I always count on a complex story that will draw me in from the beginning and once again I got just what I expected in “The Face of the Earth.”

The author does an amazing job portraying the struggles the characters felt,. An interesting and emotionally charged story that takes the reader on a journey of love, loss, friendship and faith. If you have never read anything by Deborah Raney why not give this book a try because it is certainly worth reading!

  • This book was absolutely riveting. In most disappearance cases, it seems there’s always some sort of evidence, some way to find out what happened in a timely manner (although it may not seem timely to loved ones). But in a case where someone disappeared and there are no leads? I can’t imagine what that would feel like.

  • A STORY OF COMMITMENT

Face of the Earth is a touching, thought-provoking story about commitment — genuine, deep commitment to vows made between a husband and wife.

Deborah Raney has crafted an engaging story with believable characters. Mitch and Shelley run through a wide range of realistic emotions as they struggle with the loss and uncertainty of Jill’s disappearance. The story takes twists and turns that leave no room for predictability. In fact, throughout much of the book, it is hard to imagine how the situation can be resolved with the characters remaining true to themselves. But Raney delivers an authentic, well-written resolution.

  • BOOK REVIEW: THE FACE OF THE EARTH

Deborah Raney has done it again — written a story filled with tension, desperation, waiting, doubt and, above all, hope. Her novels always involve realistically drawn characters the reader comes to love, life situations that ring true, and a message of God’s love, provision and promises fulfilled. And that’s what you get in her newest novel, The Face of The Earth. If you like a book that examines the feelings and emotions surrounding real life and the message of God’s faithfulness through it all, then you need to pick up The Face of The Earth.

  • “THE FACE OF THE EARTH” BY DEBORAH RANEY

You’ll drop off The Face of the Earth the minute you pick up this book because you won’t be able to put it down to do anything else until you finish it. Raney does a superb job of drawing the reader into the story from the very first sentence, and the likable characters make this heart-wrenching mystery your own. Unlike some other books I’ve read this year, however, the drama and sadness is not so intense as to make the book unbearable. Raney strikes just the right chord when painting emotional pictures of the limbo experienced when a loved one goes missing and the serenity one must project when around other people.

Raney ended the book perfectly. While perhaps other endings might be somewhat more realistic, nothing else could complete this work of romantic fiction with quite the same ele

  • THE FACE OF THE EARTH

WOW! As soon as I finished this book, I sent it to friend of mine and told her, “You HAVE to read this!”

It was incredibly good and one of the best books I have read so far this year. The story is intense, and a nail biter all the way through. I read halfway through the first night, and finished it the second day. This story is not only a mystery, but it touches on so many tender topics. I found myself connecting with the characters in such a way, that it felt like I knew them in real life. Long after the book was over, I found myself thinking about this family.

This is a book that you want to savor and at the same time, speed through to see what happens. I think every married couple should read this book – it makes you think long and hard.

I was eager for this story to progress for these families. It is day-to-day with putting one foot in front of the other. It is unpredictable and real; the unknown, uncertainty. Leaning upon and trusting God’s care for us is sure. This story reflects the treasure given in knowing and receiving the depth of His love. Jill’s disappearance challenges and reveals faith and obedience as lives are surrendered to Him.

  • TAKING SIDES?

By the middle of the story I wasn’t sure if I even wanted Jill to return home. I guess that is how Mitchell and Shelley felt too. It was hard to acknowledge that feeling, since it kind of felt like I was taking sides. This is a very believable, heartfelt work of fiction that reaches deep into a woman’s soul.
