Through the Shadows (Abingdon, May 2016)

As San Francisco rises from the ashes, an age-old battle looms between corruption and the promise of new beginnings.

The devastating earthquake is just two years past, but the city of San Francisco is still trying to recover. Destruction of this magnitude is not so easy to overcome-and neither are the past regrets shadowing Elizabeth King’s hopeful future.

Hoping to right her wrongs, Elizabeth dedicates herself to helping girls rescued from slavery in Chinatown brothels, even if it means putting her own life at risk to sneak through the gloomy alleys and rooftops where dangers lurk.

Putting her life on the line for a worthy cause is admirable. But opening her heart is even more terrifying. So when Elizabeth meets attorney, Charles McKinley—a man who dreams of reforming San Francisco’s crooked politics—Elizabeth begins to doubt: Can she maintain her pretense and hide her past? Or will her secret jeopardize both their futures?

  • WILL HE FORGIVE HER?

Who has never heard about the horrible earthquake that took place in San Francisco or the fires that came after? Elizabeth King finds herself two later still trying to recover. She has to do this alone and is not looking for any new friends. She spends her time trying to help as many young women as she can to get out of the brothels in Chinatown. Charles McKinley is an attorney that who also is trying to help people in need. She knows that there can be no future for them especially after he learns about her past. What will happen if he ever finds out? Will he forgive her? But, they start to get closer and she gets more afraid. What should she do? I give this book a 4/5. I was given this book for a review and these are my opinions.

  • LITFUSE PRESENTS ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’ BY: KAREN BARNETTE

The real life story and ministry of Donaldina Cameron is the inspiration for this story, Through the Shadows. Ms. Cameron served at San Francisco’s Presbyterian Mission and because of her ministry, 3000 young Chinese girls were rescued from slavery and prostitution. This made the story much more appealing, knowing these situations and issues acted out by these wonderful characters actually happened. Karen Barnette does a wonderful job weaving together this special story to not only tell of what happened in early history, as well as making us away of what is happening in the world.

I think I have posted this before, but it wasn’t in a category so I posted it again just to make sure.

  • YET ANOTHER HISTORICAL WINNER IN MY BOOKSHELF!

My favorite thing about Karen’s books is definitely the raw emotions the characters experience, and the places she uses! She has such a way about choosing the little talked about aspects of our history, and making it into a well-written gem! I love hearing about things not often talked about, and Karen always brings new things to my attention.

I used to think I hated history, but I discovered that the best way for me to learn about those important moments in time is to find a way to be able to relate to it. Karen does this by taking an important historical event and captivating me with each pivotal character, this way I get to experience for myself what may have been going on during this chaotic time in history.

  • BOOK REVIEW ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’ BY KAREN BARNETT

Through the Shadows is an amazing tale of forgiveness, healing and love against all odds. The characters fight against the social constraints of society towards women, men and even foreigners, corruption that goes unpunished and the societal norm. It leaves you with hope and understanding. A fantastic read from start to finish, that leaves you craving just a little bit more!

  • ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’ BY KAREN BARNETT

This third Golden Gate Chronicles novel transports Karen Barnett’s readers once again to the San Francisco of the early 1900s. Wtth great historical detail, Barnett tells an excellent (and romantic) story involving social injustice and corruption, as well as courage and redemption.I really enjoyed this novel and easily recommend it to fellow lovers of historical (romantic) fiction. It’s an engrossing and satisfying read.

Karen Barnett is a wonderful author who is quite talented at her work. Reading her novels makes me feel like I have entered into a time machine, bringing San Francisco to life in the early 1900’s. Through the Shadows is book number three and while this could be read alone, I believe it is best if you read them all in order. Makes more sense and since many of the same characters are involved through the story line, you should probably just read them all.

  • ENJOYED THIS STORY AND ITS MULTIPLE SUBPLOTS.

I like the heroine of this book. She was pressured to walk an immoral path, but she managed to get herself away from it. Unfortunately, it cost her original life dream. I felt sad that she didn’t have someone that she felt she could go to for advice and help. Even though she became angry with God, she follows His leading as she’s looking for a better life; and she finds the peace she lacked.

  • ENTERTAINING, INSPIRATIONAL, AND COMPELLING

Through the Shadows is a moving, compelling, and thoroughly satisfying conclusion to Karen Barnett’s outstanding series, the Golden Gate Chronicles. Set against the backdrop of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, this series vividly conveys the feelings and emotions of that time – from fear, loss, and destruction to determination, courage, and hope. This story is very impressive with its historical authenticity, rich characterization, and spiritual impact of this novel. Through the Shadows has that perfect blend of fascinating historical backdrop, appealing characters, and spiritual depth. Highly recommended.

I like how Elizabeth leaves her comfortable life to help those who are coming from horrible situations to minister to them. As she does, she sees the grace of God working in her own life. As she faces her painful past and when all is revealed, I like how Donaldina stands beside Elizabeth when her job is in jeopardy. I also like how Charles does not bow to corruption but fights against it, even though it puts him and his future in a precarious position with powerful people.

  • ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’

Through the Shadows is book three of The Golden Gate Chronicles, and touches on such heavy topics as political corruption and human trafficking. But it also covers God’s love and His grace, and how they cannot be earned; they are His free gift to us.

I really enjoyed learning more about the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake, as well as learning about the Cameron House, the Occidental Mission Home for Girls, which was started in 1874, with it’s initial purpose being to intervene on behalf of young, Asian, immigrant females who had become vulnerable upon arrival into the United States.

Truly, another exceptional historical, mostly fiction, based on fact, by Karen Barnett.

Elizabeth comes to the city to work at a Mission for Chinese girls escaping from dire circumstances in Chinatown. But she brings with her a secret. I wish the author had just come out with it, instead of alluding to it over and over and over and not really telling you what the secret is until you’re annoyed about it.

  • BOOK REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY – ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’ BY KAREN BARNETT

Through the Shadows is the third book in Karen Barnett’s Golden Gate Chronicles. It is set primarily in San Francisco in 1908, a couple of years after the earthquake, as the city was rebuilt.

This novel, like the previous books in the series, features the King family. Elizabeth King is a former budding concert pianist who cut her career short after a complicated and unhappy relationship. She finds herself in San Francisco, working at a Mission that helps save very young girls from brothels in Chinatown.

Her life and work also connect her to Charles McKinley, an idealistic young attorney who wants to make a difference in the lives of the community.

This is a sensitively told story dealing with issues that are very relevant today, like immigration and choosing love over fear.

One thing I find interesting is how two of the biggest issues in this story, set in 1908, are still such big issues today. Sex trafficking and corruption in politics are headlines today, and it sure doesn’t seem like things have improved at all.

What is wonderful about this story, though, is that it is clear that an individual can make such a huge difference, even in a such a big issue. What are you doing to make a difference in people’s lives?

I loved this book! Elizabeth is just the kind of character I like – one who fights for the oppressed without a thought of her own danger, loving and loyal to those she cares for, yet fragile and wounded in spirit. Charles is the perfect hero also.

  • ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’

I liked the story line and the characters. This is a Book 3, and I enjoyed it enough that I’ll keep an eye out for Out of the Ruins and Beyond the Ashes, books 1 and 2 in the Golden Gate Chronicles.

  • ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’ BY KAREN BARNETT

As with Karen Barnett’s previous titles, Through the Shadows is an entertaining read of life after the earthquake. Readers get an insight into the good, the bad, and the downright ugly of San Francisco in the early 20th century.

  • ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’

This was a delightful read that I quickly fell in love with. The characters were well thought out and I love how Barnett doesn’t give you all the story at one time. Not knowing what was going to happen, is what kept me wanting to continue to read this book.

  • ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’

As my first book from Karen Barnet, I was thoroughly impressed with Through the Shadows. Karen has a way of drawing her readers into her stories and falling in love with her characters from page one.

  • ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’

Through The Shadows is book three in the Golden Gate Chronicles. This series is by far one of the best series I have read. I love Karen Barnett’s books because they correspond wonderfully with history itself. I hope that there will be more in this series because I will be sure to read them.

  • DELICATELY WEAVES CHARACTERS FROM DIFFERENT SOCIAL BACKGROUNDS

The plot weaves characters together in a symphonic interplay of redemption, rebuilding, courage, and love. While the story will be appreciated as a comforting read by fans of historical Christian romance, thought provoking decisions greet the reader at every turn.

  • ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’ (THE GOLDEN GATE CHRONICLES #3)

I really enjoyed getting to know Charles and Elizabeth. Their struggles with worthlessness due to how they think others will view them rang so familiar to me and I’m sure to other readers as well. I liked the aspect of the mission working to save girls of Chinatown from a life of slavery. I thought it interesting that the home of Miss Cameron still exists today and is still involved in serving the community. What a legacy! I have been entertained by each of the three books in this series. The theme of trusting God in adversity and relying on Him through our life struggles runs through each book is just one of the many themes of faith depicted. Great job Karen!

  • BOOK REVIEW-‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’

I loved this book! There is a great plot taking us to the early 1900s in San Fransisco and people trying to make a difference. Barnett doesn’t give you all the pieces to the story at once, so that sense of mystery keeps you turning the pages. It was like she would give you little nibbles in the midst of this great buffet of information that made you want to come back for seconds and thirds. I wanted to know more, and I would think about the book when I wasn’t reading it. The characters just draw you in!

  • ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’

Elizabeth and Charles both do a lot of growing up in this story and I enjoyed watching their transformations take place. I especially liked the message that even when you do make mistakes, you can be forgiven and move past them, they don’t have to haunt you your entire life.

  • BOOK REVIEW: ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’ BY KAREN BARNETT

I liked this book. I had a little bit of hard time getting into it but I was soon pulled into the story. I want to be like Donaldina – passionate about her cause and not willing to let others get in her way!

  • A BEAUTIFUL STORY!

Karen Barnett’s writing is funny and thickly laced with references to God and faith. She transports the reader back in time to 1908 San Francisco with her well-researched prose. She unfolds the story beautifully, while maintaining an air of mystery to keep the reader engaged. She also keeps a mission focus in the forefront of the story, which I personally appreciate since I am trying to become more kingdom-minded.

  • ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’ BOOK REVIEW

Through the Shadows is an amazing tale of forgiveness, healing and love against all odds. Our characters fight against the social constraints of society towards women, men and even foreigners, corruption that goes unpunished and the societal norm. It leaves you with hope and understanding. A fantastic read from start to finish, that leaves you craving just a little bit more!

  • SPRING READS: ‘THROUGH THE SHADOWS’

The novel has a lot good things going for it – well-written and likable characters, a believable plot, intriguing dialogue and great descriptions, which the latter is a must for a historical fiction novel. Overall, though it’s not my typical cup of tea, I found myself loving every bit (well, page) of Through the Shadows. It surpassed all my expectations.
