{More about To Know You}

Julia Whittaker’s rocky past yielded two daughters, both given up for adoption as infants. Now she must find them to try to save her son.

Julia and Matt Whittaker’s son has beaten the odds for thirteen years only to have the odds—and his liver—crash precipitously. The only hope for his survival is a “living liver” transplant, but the transplant list is long and Dillon’s time is short. His two older half-sisters, born eighteen months apart to two different fathers, offer his only hope for survival.

But can Julia ask a young woman—someone she surrendered to strangers long ago and has never spoken with—to make such a sacrifice to save a brother she’s never known? Can she muster the courage to journey back into a shame-filled season of her life, face her choices and their consequences, and find any hope of healing?

And what if she discovers in her own daughters’ lives that a history of foolish choices threatens to repeat itself? Julia knows she’s probably embarking on a fool’s errand—searching for the daughters she abandoned only now that she needs something from them. But love compels Julia to take this journey. Can grace and forgiveness compel her daughters to join her?

In To Know You, Shannon Ethridge and Kathryn Mackel explore how the past creates the present . . . and how even the most shattered lives can be redeemed.

  • TO KNOW YOU

The story is about a mother that has given up 2 daughters to adoption when she was young, now as she is older and married with a young son who needs a transplant. It is full of drama and anticipation in each page you turn. It has a few twists and does keep your interest till the very end. I really enjoyed each character and the full story line of each of them. Recommended.

  • BOOK REVIEW: “TO KNOW YOU” BY SHANNON ETHRIDGE AND KATHRYN MACKEL

Let me start by saying “To Know You” is a tear-jerker. This is not to say this is bad just that it is highly emotional and you should have a box of tissues standing by. This is the kind of movie that they air on a Sunday night. It has plenty of atmosphere, great characters and an incredible story. Your chores will suffer once you start reading this book because you will not want to put it down. I do not believe I have ever read a story like this before and I am quite impressed.

  • EMOTIONAL READ

To Know You tackles some extremely difficult situations; adoption, finding your biological mother/daughter, dealing with a dying child, and asking others to donate organs for that child. It weaves together the minor story lines with flashbacks and various points of view, allowing the reader to get to know each of the characters a little better. The novel generates strong emotions and had me asking a lot of “what ifs.” Overall, this is a powerful novel. I would recommend it.

  • I was reading To Know You every spare minute I had-I couldn’t put it down. It is a very well written book, with many twists and turns to keep your attention. But I also had a personal interest, because I was adopted and when my son had uncontrolled seizures I set out to find my birth family to find out medical information that might help. What an emotional roller coaster!

  • INCREDIBLE BOOK … HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

To me, the best part of the book was the way the author made the characters come alive. I felt every bit of their emotions. At various times, I wanted to hug one character or shake another one senseless. It truly seemed as though I was reading about friends rather than paper people.

I’m happy to give two thumbs up to this incredible book. While I don’t keep many books on my “keeper” shelf, this one has earned its rightful place there! Highly, highly recommend!

  • TO KNOW YOU

This book is a great story about forgiveness and God’s work in our lives. His ways are not our ways and sometimes it seems we are going through the impossible but He always is in it. Like my mom says we only see the back of the tapestry God is making of our lives, He sees the beautiful picture on the other side that we don’t see fully until heaven.

This is a very well written novel of forgiveness, reconciliation and hope. There are several sub-stories that are seamlessly woven together to form one compelling narrative. There are important relationship issues that are addressed in this book, making it a great choice for book discussion groups, including teen groups. I highly recommend this novel.

  • TO KNOW YOU BY SHANNON ETHRIDGE

This story is about family and healing and forgiveness and discovery and, yes, miracles. It’s about strong bonds and sacrifices. It’s about putting someone else’s needs before your own. It’s about seeing God in the midst of your troubles. There is so much about this book that I absolutely loved. I shed many tears during the course of this book but I love that. I love a book that has the ability to make me look into my heart and ask what I would do in that same situation. I guarantee you will love this book but make sure you have plenty of Kleenex handy while reading it. If I could give it more than five stars I would. Very highly recommended!

I was familiar with Shannon Ethridge as a non-fiction writer, most well known in Christian literary circles for Every Woman’s Battle. Her talents as a versatile writer are evident as she truly delivers an amazing story of forgiveness and sacrificial love even in the midst of difficult choices paired with the effects that follow. With characters who will keep your interest, and a plot that will have you convincing yourself to read “just one more page,” Ethridge and Mackel deliver a story of God’s ability to turn ashes into beauty.

To me, a major theme of this book is that no matter how painful the past is the Lord can redeem it. Ethridge does a great job of helping the reader hold on in the tough times with bits of grace and hope. She also does a great job of inviting the reader into the story, including them in the good times and bad. Have a tissue handy but please don’t miss out on To Know You!

  • TO KNOW YOU

This is a very deep and moving story, it took me a while to finish it because it is so emotional, I finished wiping tears from my eyes. This is a story of a woman, Julia Whittaker, who gave up two daughter’s, by two different fathers, for adoption. She seeks them out because her son is dying from liver failure. She finds them to see if they would be possible matches, and would be willing to donate part of their liver for Dillon. First she finds Destiny, who lives in LA and has just broken up with her boyfriend. She them goes to North Carolina, with Destiny in tow, to find Chloe, who she had named Hope. Chloe is married to a very controlling man. The two girls agree to get tested if Julia takes them to meet their birth fathers.

  • “TO KNOW YOU” BY SHANNON ETHRIDGE AND KATHRYN MACKEL

This is a very honest story on many levels. The subject matter is for mature readers only. We all make mistakes and bad decisions sometimes. We all fall into sin. It’s not easy to deal with the messes we make for ourselves. Yet even in our failings God can work things out for good, because He’s that kind of God! This is a story for all who need His help on this walk through life.

  • TO KNOW YOU BY SHANNON ETHRIDGE AND KATHRYN MACKEL, ©2013

Matthew and Julia Whittaker have decisions to make to further attempt to save their son from imminent death if a type O blood donor isn’t found and a match cannot be made. Julia must go into her past and search to find her two daughters she released for adoption before meeting her husband, Matt.

With a private jet and pilot at her disposal, Julia and Matt track down the sisters and she goes to them individually. It is a little difficult in the beginning to travel back and forth in time periods, between now and her reminiscence of her time with the birth fathers. All lives are touched as they meet yesterday, clearing the way to live freely and openly today in what once was hidden.

  • THE ABSOLUTE BEST FICTION I’VE READ IN A VERY LONG TIME!

I couldn’t put this book down! I’d read Shannon Ethridge’s nonfiction book “Every Woman’s Battle” (which every woman should read–it’s amazing!) Though that book is nonfiction, Shannon is an incredible prose writer and I couldn’t wait to read her first fiction book. I couldn’t put it down, I loved the characters, and the plot was heavy and interweaving. This isn’t the kind of book (like most) where you can predict what will happen–there were numerous twists and turns, people made some huge mistakes that had me wondering how in the world the characters would get through them, but through it all God’s hand was using even their greatest mistakes to do something beautiful in their lives. A very encouraging, thought-provoking, uplifting read!

Written by The Traveling Sisterhood on November 15, 2013 | e

  • The topics involved in this story, were sensitively dealt with and held my attention throughout the book. Adoption, birth families , siblings, half siblings, marriage- all these complicated subjects in it!! The plot has so many intertwining subplots that your attention once focused, can’t be distracted. I could NOT put this book down, until I had read the last page. I lived this story alongside Julia and her family. It is a situation that anyone could encounter.

  • The story is told from multiple perspectives and I really like that we can see how the different characters deal with the situations. I really liked the focus on forgiving yourself, accepting God’s forgiveness, and living in freedom instead of wallowing in the mistakes we’ve made. It was well-written and made me want to keep reading to see how the story ended up.

  • POWERFUL

To Know You by Shannon Ethridge is a moving story that drew me in from the very first page. The story is laid out in chapters but also includes date and time. That feature made the story feel more fast paced and brought in a sense of following right with the characters. Shannon Ethridge does a marvelous job of diving into a multitude of real word situations and issues and shows the reader that redemption is possible no matter what.

The book is as good as it sounds. The plot is more intricate and complicated than I expected, but not so much that it wasn’t easy to follow. Yes, the book is an enjoyable and entertaining read, but it delves into relationships and the results of choices, results that can affect a lot of people. Through some great fictional characters, the authors show the dangers of living loose sexual lives, but also shows how God will forgive any sin and bring good out of bad.

  • A GREAT STORY OF REDEMPTION AND HEALING

The unusual premise of To Know You caught my attention first, but the excellent writing and story-telling grabbed me from the first page to the end. It’s rare when I find a book hard to put down, but this one kept me reading long past when I needed to be doing something else. The characters were extremely well-drawn and real. And following their journeys of discovery was compelling, even to point of tears at times. Good tears. Such a great story of redemption and healing,

  • TO KNOW YOU – REVIEWED

“I’ve messed up enough to learn that God redeems our post when we trust Him with our future.” (Julia to Destiny)

The words Julia spoke to Destiny that day are pretty “prophetic” when you consider the many twists and turns that rip through the lives of the characters in Shannon Ethridge and Kathryn Mackel’s novel To Know You. Choices have consequences and each and every character in this novel experiences the direct result of someone else’s choices – good and bad. The ONLY place that our choices can be redeemed is through the precious blood of Jesus.

Julia knows this, Destiny denies it, Luke is discovering it, Chloe knows it minimally, and EVERYONE in the story must come face to face with this truth in one way or another. Their journey is one that will take you on such unexpected, sometimes unpleasant, always amazing twists and turns your heart will be a bit exhausted by the time you reach the final pages. Yes, it is a story filled with drama – LOTS of drama – but it is real drama. By real, I mean it is familiar and something you have either experienced or know about indirectly.

  • AN INTRIGUING READ

Within just a few seconds of cracking open To Know You by Shannon Ethridge and Kathryn Mackel, I was captivated by the lives of Julia and Matt Whittaker. Faced with what no parent should ever have to deal with—the impending death of their only son, The Whittaker’s effort to save their son has them reeling with a myriad of emotions including doubt and anger at God.

The writers done a wonderful job of showcasing the complexities of our lives. Each of our choices have consequences and faith does not exempt us from troubles but serves as a beautiful backdrop to rest our hurts, pains, joys, and sorrows.

Readers will have no trouble connecting with these characters as they grapple with forgiveness, honesty, death, loss, hope, adoption, faith, fidelity, trust, and finding oneself.

  • WHAT IS THE RIGHT DECISION?

I don’t know what I would do in this situation and I guess we really wouldn’t know for sure unless we actually had to live it. I am not sure I would have had the nerve or guts to actually go ask two girls that I gave up for adoption if they could give me a piece of their liver to save the child I did keep.

I have to look at it from the girls side and it would seem that they weren’t good enough but a boy was. Why did she keep him and not them? Well, that is part of the whole journey of this book and how things played out the way that they did. It would be easy to point fingers but it really doesn’t accomplish anything, does it?

Both girls are not in the best of places right now and Julia has her work cut out for her. Dillion her son won’t make it to his 14th birthday without a transplant

This is an absolute awesome read! A mother, three children, three different fathers, two daughters adopted, one son fighting for his life, and a desperate mother trying to find help. This is a most mixed up story with a most dysfunctional family. Two adopted daughters that are as different as night and day, yet so much alike. I really, really like these characters. Julia had a lot of spunk and was willing to pull all of the stops, meeting men she slept with two decades before, which had to be embarrassing, but she did it anyway.

Every so often I read a book that makes me lose sleep. I read past my bedtime. I read until my eyes start to feel scratchy. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I pick up the book to read a couple more pages. I read while I’m cooking. I read while I’m brushing my teeth. All in an attempt just to find out what is going to happen next. “To Know You” by Shannon Ethridge and Kathryn Mackel was this kind of book for me. I absolutely did not want to put this book down. There are tons of twists and turns in this book, but the authors somehow keep it together and the book makes complete sense. It is easy to read and captures your attention from the very beginning.

  • TO KNOW YOU BY SHANNON ETHRIDGE **WITH GREAT GIVEAWAY

I loved this story. As we follow the characters on the journey of love, forgiveness and ultimately sacrifice, we learn so much that can be applied to our lives. The depth of the storyline and the way the author takes us back in time to the beginning of the story is incredible. It is well written and will keep your attention the entire time. I felt completely a part of the story. I kept wondering who, if anyone, would be a match for Dillon. I kept changing my mind on what I thought would happen and was pleasantly surprised at the end.

  • SHANNON ETHRIDGE’S TO KNOW YOU GIVEAWAY AND FACEBOOK PARTY! & BOOK REVIEW: “TO KNOW YOU”

“To Know You” is one of those novels that is completely engrossing and has you thinking about long after you finish reading. Julia and Matt are faced with the horrifying thought that their son might not live long as his only hope is to receive a living liver transplant. This need forces Julia to face her past and her daughters whom she gave up to other parents years ago. I was immediately drawn into the story and the characters’ lives.

  • SIMPLY AMAZING AND BRILLIANT!

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book that has left the affect on me that To Know You has . Ethridge and Mackel have written a story that is gritty and edgy, but beautiful at the same time. The characters are believable and their lives, while messy, portray a genuineness from which the story of redemption and grace shine brightly. This is not your typical Christian fiction where everything is nice and tidy. The authors write with raw honesty…the struggles with sin are real…faith is tested and tried…mistakes are made and made again.

  • TO KNOW YOU BOOK REVIEW AND A $100 GIFT CERTIFICATE GIVEAWAY!!

This is a book that I am excited about. I may not be able to relate exactly to the story, but to the healing of past hurts and pains I can relate a great deal. The whole way through this book, I was reminded of things that I had gone through in my own life, things I was afraid to let others know about. There were also things I never wanted to really face from my past that I recalled and was thankful I had dealt with. As the characters in the book grew in knowledge of each other and in grace and mercy and a lot of forgiveness, I could relate to doing the same in my life. It was good to be reminded of how far I had come in my own life and how I could see God’s hands in circumstances and messes I had made. This is a book that will encourage you and remind you that through even the most difficult things God will help you through it.

  • LITFUSE BLOG TOUR EVENT: TO KNOW YOU BY SHANNON ETHRIDE AND KATHRYN MACKEL

To Know You is a beautifully woven novel that challenges its readers as the believers and non-believer characters are challenged in face in the most intense and trying ways.

The characters are human. Their sin is ugly. But isn’t that the truth of all sin? Not one character is “normal”. They’re all messed up and complicated and feel unworthy of God. This is real life though. Real life is messy, human and ugly.

The characters will surprise you in their decisions when it comes to the end of this book.

  • STORY OF HEALING

My thoughts: When I first started this book I felt for every family out there that has a child with a terminal illness. All the worry that they go through each day of their child’s life. When the story turned to the hunt for an organ donor and digging up the background of the mother I thought it was a little too much. But I hung in there and the story got better.

For a while I thought that anything bad that could happen did. But God is bigger than any situation! Although I cannot say that I enjoyed most of the story it was about as real as it could get. So many women today struggle with their “need” to be affirmed of love so they jump from bed to bed.

The two unplanned pregnancies in this story to me, were great testimonies. Julia gave them up for adoption as opposed to aborting them. Too often women abort instead of blessing another family with a child they have always wanted but could not have.

I would say that my favorite character in the book was Destiny, Julia’s first born child. She has issues in getting close to anyone because she is sure they are all going to walk out on her at some point in life. She was raised to know God but does not have a personal relationship with Him now. Again, the fear of Him walking out on her no doubt. God grows her and softens her heart throughout the story. She turns out to be a wonderful young woman.

Without getting too much more into the story I would say that if you like drama this is for you. I would also suggest this for ages 16 and up due to situations involving premarital sex, drugs, and adultery.

  • GRACE-DRENCHED STORYTELLING!

When I began To Know You, I was intrigued by the idea that the authors would take their experiences as writers and from counseling women on wholesome relationships and holy, healthy sexuality, and write these themes into a story.

There is so much good in this story!
I felt like I was part of the character’s world. I absorbed their struggles as I read, I held my breath as they navigated the darkness and confusion, and I felt like I was with them, waiting together for the light to break through.
And by the end, I loved these people.
    They learn so much,
    They grow so much,
They draw near to the heart of God.
And the ending is most incredibly Grace-drenched!

  • TO KNOW YOU

The story itself was good though. I think it could bring healing and hope to people who are going through similar situations.
The book was a good reminder that people are just people, that we all mess up-no matter who we are or what we are.

  • TO KNOW YOU

To Know You may reveal a story where a lot of bad stuff hits the fan in a lot of ways, but it also shows God’s grace along the way. We see sin, consequences but above all His hand working in it all. A novel of many storylines converging, in it we see Julia Whittaker reaching out to the two daughters she placed for adoption over twenty years ago in her desperate attempt to find a liver donor for her dying son (you can read the full synopsis here). The authors did a really good job of switching points of view and specifying when events were happening. I usually lean towards “happier” books but I’m really glad I read this one. When it ended it just felt like one more tale of God’s sovereignty and how he brings beauty from ashes (love that).

  • WONDERFUL, THOUGHT-PROVOKING STORY

This story is very interesting and had me on the edge of my pillow most of last Saturday night and into Sunday morning. There are some very deep subjects covered in Julia’s story and it was very emotional and thought provoking all the way through. The salvation message is strong throughout this book and it was easy to see the different levels that each of the female characters were in with their walk with Christ. This is a wonderful book – not just for the strong scriptural and faith background that is all throughout the book. It was also nice seeing strong male role models in Julia’s husband and even though Destiny’s boyfriend is a brand new Christian he seemed to be going into a family leadership direction. Outstanding book!

  • IF YOU ONLY READ ONE NOVEL – MAKE IT THIS ONE!

This book is fast paced and you just never know where it’s going to take you next. There are some shocking revelations and I love how the authors chose to show what grace, redemption, and love really are all about. I also liked how they characters changed and grew as they got to know each other. The surprise ending will have you in tears. In the last part of the book, I never had a tissue box too far away. I wiped away sad tears and happy tears and this story just touched me in such a profound way! I really didn’t want it to end! Happily, there were some sample pages from the next book in this series – yippee! I can’t wait to read it! If you only read one novel this year, it should be this one!

  • A GRIPPING STORY OF HOPE AND REDEMPTION

I didn’t expect was to be sucked in by the lyrical writing and the intense struggles for identity each of the three women represents. The challenges and questions they face are real — something many women can relate to. It is both a cautionary tale and a story of hope and redemption. It’s women fiction that did something most stories like this can’t do — it pulled me in from the first page and wouldn’t let me go until “the end.” I highly recommend this story!

  • TO KNOW YOU

To Know You is a completely gripping novel about choices, consequences, and incredible grace. It beautifully shows the weight of sin and the power of Christ to redeem.

Told from multiple perspectives, this novel really allowed me to get into the head of each main character and understand how her choices led her to the place she was when the novel began and ended.

As I reached the novel’s conclusion, I wanted more … so I was very happy to turn the page and find that a second book centered around Julia’s daughter Destiny’s adoptive family will release next year. I’m already itching to get my hands on it.

  • TO KNOW YOU

This story touched a nerve with me. My best friend tried to find her birth mom when my friend’s son came down with a rare disease. I felt a lot of emotions I experienced with her at that time. This book is by far one of the best books I have read in a while. It was absolutely wonderful, and in my opinion, had everything a good book needs. I didn’t want to put it down! Once I started reading this story I did not want to eat, sleep, or work. I just wanted to dive into the story. Everytime I thought I had it figured out I would be thrown for a loop and the ending was quite a surprise. I would have never seen that one coming. The book covers a multitude of topics but the biggest one is redemption as you are taken on a journey that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole story. The book may be fictional, but the realism in the story would catch your breath. This book is definitely a must read!

  • BOOK REVIEW: TO KNOW YOU

With a whole lot to think about and discuss, To Know You is perfect for a book discussion group. It is also an incredibly good read — moving prose, wonderfully real characters and a tension that keeps readers turning pages as fast as they can. Alternating points of view allow the reader to get the whole story — full of emotions and spiritual longings and questions. My favorite phrase in the novel is shame off you – a great truth to remember. I cannot say it often enough — read this book!

  • TO KNOW YOU

This book was original, refreshing, and thought provoking. The way the book told the girls’ stories in addition to Julia’s made me feel that there were stories within the story, and I really enjoyed that. In this novel, the character I admired the most was Matt. He was so supportive of Julia’s journey through her past, and he was the cornerstone of the story in the role that he played. Without Matt’s encouragement, trust and reassurance, Julia would never have had the courage to do what was right and seek to repair the mistakes of her past.

To Know You is a fascinating story. There’s a surprise around every page and another complication stirring the pot at each turn.
