Press Release

Bible study for children will never be boring again!

New book from the illustrator of The Beginner’s Bible brings rhyme and humor to story time

Seattle: Chances are you still remember your favorite nursery rhyme — why? Because meter and rhyme are powerful memorization devices. So for parents who want their children to have the lessons of the Bible hidden deep in their hearts, Kelly Pulley’s new Magnificent Tales™ release, Treasury of Bible Stories: Rhythmical Rhymes of Biblical Times (David C Cook/September 1, 2014/ISBN: 978-0781409179 /$19.99), will be the perfect nighttime read.

Best known for his work as the illustrator of TheBeginner’s Bible, which sold more than 1.5 million copies, Pulley introduces us to his Treasury of Bible Stories, a full-color, hardcover book which is engaging enough to capture the attention of even the most media-savvy youngsters. Written for ages 4-8 (children who are too old for a toddler Bible but too young for complete Bibles), this collection offers engaging spiritual lessons, humorous rhymes and vibrant illustrations. Each story takes about ten minutes to read, making it perfect for an end-of-day, bedside wind-down. Created to be read aloud, the stories are presented in a way the whole family can enjoy.

From “The Salty Tale of Noah and the Ark” to “The Lasting Story of the Last Supper,” the rhyming tales in Treasury of Bible Stories remind us God loves his people — in the Bible and today. Not even mom or dad will grow tired of reading its pages night after night . . . after night. “I have four kids, so you know I’ve been there! I must admit, I’ve tried hiding books or skipping pages to get through them faster,” Pulley reveals. “I think the writing is clever enough in Treasury of Bible Stories to make them enjoyable for adults as well as children.”

Reminiscent of the Dr. Seuss classics, these familiar Bible stories come to life on the page with creative art and a dash of humor. Pulley reveals the famous author and illustrator has definitely been an inspiration for him. “When I was at the school library in grade school, I would always head straight to the Dr. Seuss books. I loved the rhyming tales and the fantastical illustrations. I still do.”

The book is the fifth installment in David C Cook’s Magnificent Tales series, which includes the four previously released stories. Treasury of Bible Stories contains the most beloved biblical narratives from both the Old and New Testaments, leading up to Christ’s death and resurrection. Pulley chose key stories with the strongest spiritual lessons and images that would jump off the pages.

Filled with clever cadence, captivating art and clear spiritual lessons, Treasury of Bible Stories will quickly become a reader’s beloved family tradition.

About the author

Kelly Pulley was born and raised in a quaint Midwestern town surrounded by corn and soybean fields. Pulley began his career as a graphic artist at a leading sportswear screen-printing company. An interview with Kelly Pulley

Q: Who was the Treasury of Bible Stories written for and what are some of the best ways parents can use the book within the home? Can Bible class teachers use it too?

I’ve illustrated many children’s Bible storybooks over the years; most are for toddlers or early readers. Treasury of Bible Stories, however, was created primarily for more advanced readers (4-8 years). It’s meant to be fun and entertaining, yet it follows the original Bible stories very closely; it has no made-up characters or talking animals, etc., and the stories all have clear messages. So, yes, I think it could be a very useful tool for church or at-home Bible classes.

Q: You’re a well-known illustrator, having done the art for the most recent release of The Beginner’s Bible, which sold 1.5 million copies. How did you transition from being a graphic designer to illustrator and writer?

I had a lull in illustration projects so I thought it would be a good idea to try something new during my down time. Writing children’s stories was an obvious choice since I was already illustrating them, but I had no idea if I could write a decent story or not. I’d never tried. My first attempt wasFood for a Fish. I showed it to my publisher, and she liked it! That was in 2008.

Q: Why is it so important for parents to make sure their children are getting a steady diet of Bible stories?

As we get older and busier it gets harder and harder to find/make time to read our Bibles. At least that’s what I’ve found in my life. Getting in the habit of reading our Bibles as early as possible seems to me to be a good idea. And when something is fun for kids, they will more likely want to do it.

Q: Treasury of Bible Stories has been called “The Bible . . . if it were written by Dr. Seuss.” Has his work been an inspiration for you?

Yes, definitely. When I was in grade school, and I was in the school library, I would always head straight to the Dr. Seuss books. I loved the rhyming stories and the fantastical illustrations. I still do. It’s not that I try to make my stories sound “Dr. Seuss-like,” but I enjoy writing in the same meter he usually used. It works well for longer, more complex stories.

Q: Do you think the cadence of the rhyming in this book will help children remember the stories better?

The stories are a lot of fun to read, not only because of the rhyme and meter, but also because of word plays and the wacky pictures. I think because they are so fun, they will be reread over and over, which will help them to be remembered.

Q: In our world of slick marketing and non-stop stimulation, kids are more media-savvy than ever. How will Treasury of Bible Stories hold their attention? Why does using it as a bedtime storybook work well?

The illustrations in Treasury of Bible Stories are more contemporary and the stories more entertaining than most Bible storybooks. The stories are long enough to get the entire story and message in without dragging on and on. Most of the stories take around ten minutes to read. Just long enough for an end-of-the-day wind-down.

Q: Kids love repetition — but all parents have had a moment where they’ve thought they cannot read a particular book to their children one more time. Why won’t parents mind picking this book up night after night?

I have four kids, so you know I’ve been there! I must admit, I’ve tried hiding books or skipping pages to get through them faster . . . that never worked! I think the writing is clever enough to make them enjoyable for adults as well as children. I still like them, but I doubt that counts.

Q: How did you decide which Bible stories went into this book?

I started out with the most popular stories: Noah, David and Goliath, Daniel and the Lions, Jonah and the Whale and the story of the Nativity. The stories leading up to and including Christ’s death and resurrection were a must. For the rest I chose the most interesting stories with a good message that brought to mind the best images for illustrations. A good story should stand without illustrations but also work with only illustrations and no words.

Q: Which story in Treasury of Bible Stories is your favorite?

I have two favorites. One is “A Shout for the Lord (The Convincing Story of Gideon’s Doubt).”I like it because it has a lot going on (it has action and soldiers and such), but also because I can relate to Gideon. Many times I’ve felt God leading me, but I doubted I was the right guy for the job. My wife has warned me more than once that I was thinking like Gideon.

My other favorite story is “He Has Risen!”It’s the last story in the book and the last one I wrote.Sometimes during the writing process the right word or phrase will just pop into my head without any thought at all, as though it were a gift from God. This story has many gifts in it!

  • The first time I read this to my 6 yr old son and 9 yr old daughter, I literally read over 100 pages and they still weren’t done – but my voice was!

It’s difficult to rhyme, nevermind rhyme with accurate theology, but this storybook Bible pulls it off. There’s even a list of animals from a-z in the creation story which I thought was a tremendous feat on it’s own, but even more so with the rhyming verses.

The artwork is completely engaging and fun as well.

This Storybook Bible will be well used in this household, that’s for sure!

  • BOOK REVIEW

Treasury of Bible Stories: Rhythmical Rhymes of Biblical Times (Magnificent Tales Series) features twenty well-known Bible story poems illustrated for your child’s imagination!
This collection of Bible story poems is recommended for children from 4-8 years but I think
this is really timeless. I can see this book being passed down to future generations in our family.
They make the stories come alive& fun for the you and your children.I often try and incorporate
God in our daily activities without it feeling like sitting in a church pew. Not that there is anything
wrong with sitting in a pew but I know it was not an appealing tool in my youth. This is great for youth,
    grandparents, parents, expecting parents etc.
    My Rating is **** .

This is such a great book! My kids love it. I started out just reading it to my children. But then my oldest started reading it. Well she read it all very quickly to herself. And then she started reading it to her siblings! I love when my children can read to each other and get along with each other for long periods of time. This is a great book of Bible stories. I love when my children enjoy reading good solid stories and there is nothing better than the Bible! This Treasury of Bible Stories is truly a treasure for anyone who ones it.

  • A BOOK REVIEW

What a seriously fun book to read!

With bright colors and a fun, rhyming style writing, your child will have so much fun learning basic Bible stories like Joesph, Moses, the birth of Jesus, the feeding of the 5000 and more! It is very easy to read, perfect for older sibling to read to a younger one (as was the case at our home a number of times). I thought the rhyming brought a really fun element to the book, and reminded me a little bit of Dr. Suess, which is not a bad thing.

  • ADORABLE BIBLE STORY BOOK!

“Rhythmical Rhymes of Biblical Times” by Kelly Pulley is the new favorite Bible story book in our home. Our 2 year old absolutely enjoys the rhymes and colorful pictures, and the 352 pages definitely hold her interest!

The sizes of the stories were wonderful for preschoolers. My 2 year old could easily sit through a couple stories without getting bored. I particularly enjoyed the idea of the rhyming, since that seems to grab my 2 year old’s attention more than most story books.

  • I really enjoyed sharing this book with my children. Each story is told in words and phrases that are easy for children to understand and to relate to. Pulley takes some of the stories that don’t make sense to young listeners and adds the right amount of description and illustrations to bring it to life for them. My son looks forward to sitting down at night to read and talk about a story or two. I love that they are on the short side as it gives us a chance to discuss what we read afterwards and leaves a logical break before beginning the next story.

  • I love this Bible! It is very Dr. Seuss-y. I know that isn’t a real word, but it is the right word. These rhyming Bible stories will grab your child’s attention from the very first line. I bet you they will ask for “just one more.” While the stories are whimsical, they do follow the original story from the Bible. The illustrations are fantastic, and they will hold your child’s attention as well. If you have toddlers, preschoolers, or younger elementary-aged students, I recommend this story Bible. It would make a great Christmas gift for your little loves.

  • TREASURY OF BIBLE STORIES, BY KELLY PULLEY REVIEW

Treasury of Bible Stories, by Kelly Pulley is an amazing treasure. As a grandmother of a little girl, and of twin boys to come, I want to do my best to get them involved at a young age to know God. To know of his wonderful grace.

There are 20 stories that were retold from the bible. The illustrations are perfect. I was concerned before I read through it that some of it would be off. However, I did not find anything that would not be true. The Treasury of Bible Stories was written to entice the younger generation to want to read and listen.

Jacks favorite story so far is God’s Bigger Plan. It is the story about Queen Esther that is based on chapters 2-10 in the book of Esther. Jacks loves to just look at the illustrations while I read to her. She can sit for hours just listening. As a book lover, that is so fine by me.

I give Treasury of Bible Stories 5 stars. I find that the stories are about spot on and that it will be a wonderful addition to your bookshelf. I know it is mine.

  • RHYTHMICAL RHYMES OF BIBLICAL TIMES REVIEW

I think that the goal of making Bible stories into rhymes is a lofty goal, and I would say that Pulley achieves greatness throughout about 95% of the book. It is tough to create rhymes and I completely understand that sometimes as you read it the phrasing will be a little off. It’s nothing the kids will notice and it doesn’t make this book any less of a great book. In fact, we added it to our homeschool to supplement our Bible time. The rhymes are catchy and the stories are familiar, but short enough to last through the attention spans of my children. I highly recommend this book!

My 5-year old enjoyed the illustrations and lilting rhymes of this Bible storybook. It makes a fine supplement to Bible lessons, and is a fun bedtime read. I do think that it is so whimsical that a “real” Bible storybook is a must for little ones to really learn their Bible stories and understand that the people and events in the book were real, and that this is not just a collection of fun stories. I would recommend this book for Preschoolers and Kindergarten age kids.

My boys love Bible stories, and have several different books with them. However, I find sometimes we lose them, and they get the stories mixed up. Of course my middle also doesn’t realize that Moses from the other stories is the same as the baby in the basket. • REVIEWING “TREASURY OF BIBLE STORIES” BY KELLY PULLEY

The rhyming style used throughout the book is really fun and easy to read. I predict that nightly story time with the family would become extremely popular using this as your material, which would also promote great conversations with your kids about each story. In addition to being wonderful for kids, it would be great resource for parents, especially those who may have a harder time with scripture reading comprehension. The simple details included in these stories make them very easy to remember. I would recommend this book to every Christian family with little kids around. It will definitely be one we look forward to reading for years to come.

  • REVIEW OF THE MAGNIFICENT TALES BIBLE STORY COLLECTION BY KELLY PULLEY

This book is really cute and I’m so glad that I’ve had the privilege of reviewing it for Litfuse. I have six girls, ranging in age from thirteen, down to the baby at age one.

All of my girls have really enjoyed this book. My oldest daughter has been reading to her siblings and the littlest girls enjoy looking at the pictures as well as reading.

When I first took this book, I was thinking it would be more appropriate for my four year old but in fact, it’s a thick book with beautiful artwork and fantastically written rhythmical stories.

The thing I loved about this book is that each story was prefaced with where to find each story in the Bible and I think that is so important. I can read them the story from the Bible and then back it up with the children’s story book to make it a li

  • A GREAT NEW WAY TO TELL OLD BIBLE STORIES

This was a fun book to read and look at. I liked how the pictures were inviting to little kids. The way the stories were written were also written for kids to enjoy. Since these are written so well it is easier to read aloud to little ones. I mailed my copy to my four year old nephew and he was so excited to get it. What a great gift this would make for the little ones in your life.

  • TREASURY OF BIBLE STORIES – KELLY PULLEY (WITH A GIVEAWAY!)

I thought this book was adorable! It is so fun to read the rhyming Bible stories and the look at the gorgeous colorful pictures that go along with it.
I am always a fan of any Bible or Bible story book that makes it fun for kids to learn about the Bible. The Bible is hard enough for some adults to understand! I think its great that some authors make the Bible fun for kids. Hopefully this will get them interested enough they will continue to want to learn and will someday pick up the real Bible and start to read.

  • MAGNIFICENT TALES: TREASURY OF BIBLE STORIES – RHYTHMICAL RHYMES OF BIBLICAL TIMES BY KELLY PULLEY

This is an absolutely wonderful book and one that I highly recommend. “Magnificent Tales” includes well-known bible stories that most children will hear in Sunday School from both the Old Testament and New Testament — Stories such as Adam & Eve, Noah’s Ark, Daniel and the Lion’s Den, Jonah and the Great Fish, and ending with the birth of Jesus, his death on the cross and his resurrection.

The artwork in the book further complements the rhyming method of the stories. The pictures are very colorful and just fun to look at. I really enjoyed the way the Bible stories were put to rhyme and it makes for very easy reading. You may recognize the style of this author (Kelly Pulley) because he is also the illustrator of The Beginner’s Bible.

Again, I recommend this book as a staple…

  • BRINGING BIBLE STORIES TO LIFE

The book is well illustrated with beautiful eye grabbing gorgeous colors. With 351 pages, and a hard cover to make it a sturdy one for little hands. We keep it by his bedside, and is the first book requested each night. A cute and accurate way to bring bible stories to life for little ones and the rest of the family, the boys can’t wait to have their story each night and have shown a lot of anticipation. Even our 9 year old is excited by the story told in great way, and they giggle and enjoy the illustrations.

  • GREAT TOOL FOR PARENTS

If you and your children like Dr. Suess books, you will love Magnificent Tales: Treasury of Bible Stories – Rhythmical Rhymes of Biblical Times. I am particularly excited to have this book to read with my kindergartner. The repetition of sounds is a great way to help little ones just learning to read and to instill good comprehension in beginning readers. The illustrations add so much to the stories. They are very eye-catching! I appreciated that the biblical references were given at the beginning of each story so that older readers in the family can go to the Bible and read the biblical account from Scripture. Thank you Mr. Pulley for giving a tool that the entire family can use to engage in the story of redemption from the Bible!

  • DEEP BIBLE STORIES FOR CHILDREN!

This will most likely be a good book to keep near children’s bedsides, to read to them when they are ready to go to sleep, or to keep on bookshelves in classrooms or home libraries. Most of the stories seem to last about ten pages with some of the pages only being used for illustrations, which I think helps children learn deeper about the stories if they have learned shorter versions of them through other books. The hardback edition (which is the one I received) will probably hold up for awhile as long as the pages aren’t ripped out of them, or it isn’t dropped very often.

This is such a delightful book. I’ve been using it in the mornings to expand on topics brought up in our homeschool curriculum. We’ve read about Noah and Adam and Eve so far and it is ADORABLE! Totally rhymes like the children’s classics from Dr. Suess.

  • TREASURY OF BIBLE STORIES

TREASURY OF BIBLE STORIES is rhymes. Some of the Bible stories aren’t exactly right, for instance, with the resurrection of Jesus, the poems say the guards pretended they were dead, but that isn’t right. They actually fainted. Other than some of the facts being misrepresented, the book was good and we like it. It is a good book for little kids, such as toddlers, preschoolers and early elementary age kids. It is good for use in Sunday school and nurseries or children’s church when teachers or leaders read to the kids.

My twelve year old enjoyed reading it, but she feels it is way below her age limit. My nine year old liked it more – but she is only slightly above the recommended ages of 4 – 8.

  • GREAT COLLECTION OF BIBLE STORIES!

Our family has enjoyed this Treasury of Bible Stories! We found that it is quite humorous while being Biblically accurate! I really liked the titles for each of the stories as they catch young ones attention. Plus the rhymes help make the story engaging and add some humor too.

My son loved the illustrations! Some of them are so silly and very eye-catching!

One thing I really appreciated is that even though there are not as many Bible stories as I originally thought, Kelly does a wonderful job in explaining each Bible story thoroughly! He didn’t skip over any minor details or made it to short, but neither was it too long (since my son young it was a little long for him so we had to break it up) and over descriptive for kids.

Kelly Pulley’s work has been compared to Dr. Suess’s, and I can see why. The stories are wonderful to read out loud, and they are perfect for early readers, as their rhymes will help them with the reading itself. In fact, I would say up to age 10 would enjoy the readings! It is a hefty book at over 350 pages, but the 20 stories (like Tricked by a Snake, Let My People Go, The Biggest and the Toughest or Lost and Found) are also short enough that they could be used for Sunday School class readings, and they offer a easily to understand story for kids. One thing I did notice, this really is more of a read aloud book, with parents and children, since there were some words that were hard. Great job on behalf of the author, The illustrations are great as well and help to make the stories become more alive.

  • CELEBRATE THE TREASURY OF BIBLE STORIES BY ENTERING THE RHYTHMICAL RHYMES KINDLE GIVEAWAY!

My son is at an age where he LOVES books, but not reading them, he loves to point to everything he knows and tell me what it is: “balloon” “elephant” “flower” “cup” etc. So we don’t read books as much as object identify, but it’s still fun. I started going through this book with him and he was quick to point out the fish and trees.

I this book is great for kids, age 3+. The illustrations are full of bold colors and I really enjoyed looking at them. Every page is illustrated and is so different from the one before it. The rhymes are mostly concise and put the stories in kid-language so they can understand it. It’s a great book!

  • TREASURY OF BIBLE STORIES BY KELLY PULLEY

I imagined a book with lots of little rhymes pertaining to Bible events and people, as opposed to the longer rewordings that it really is. There are 20 Bible events in here. I would have preferred the smaller bits and pieces to supplement our lessons, but again, I DO like this book, so far. The rhyming really isn’t as noticeable as one would think with “Dr. Seuss” being thrown about in some descriptions.

  • WILL BECOME A TREASURE TO YOUR CHILDREN

‘Rhythmical Rhymes of Biblical Times’ by Kelly Pulley is a colorful hard cover anthology of Bible story poems. Presented beautifully with full color illustrations on nearly every page, these 20 tales are quite engaging when read aloud. The lyrical nature of the writing makes these stories almost like songs, so don’t be surprised if you hear your children reciting passages from the book. The pages are thick and this is a well-crafted volume. It will stand up to years of page turning.

  • TREASURY OF BIBLE STORIES REVIEW

My son loved the illustrations, especially the lamb on the cover. When asked what he would like me to share that was his choice.

My 2 year old was able to sit through the stories while playing nearby looking at the pictures as I turned the pages. He said he liked the stories.

This book is so much more than I expected! It is a thick hard back book that children will enjoy reading!
The entire book is put in easy language for youngsters to better understand and it makes it more fun to read to kids with a little rhyme! Obviously this is a not the Bible but these stories mean a lot to children who are learning about the Bible and who God is.

  • MAGICAL AND FUN

My kids love Bible stories and they just never get old. They are classics with lessons for a lifetime and so they never get tired of hearing them, especially when it’s in a new version. The Treasury of Bible Stories Rhythmical Rhymes I was particularly excited about because I like rhymes! I feel like their catchiness makes it easier to remember things and when it comes to Bible stories, that’s important!

  • CAPTIVATING!

Okay, so Rhythmical Rhymes of Biblical Times *is* a children’s Bible story book, but it reads like Dr. Seuss, and *I* was even pulled in by the catchy rhythms, the vivid pictures, the nice thick page feel, and the lessons taught. I could very easily see this becoming a child’s favorite bedtime story book, and with 20 stories to choose from, you won’t get tired of reading the same thing over and over to them. I don’t know about the children in your life, but I could picture the kids in mine even memorizing the stories and acting them out..they’d have such a blast doing that!

  • RHYMICAL RHYMES DELIGHT!

This treasury of Bible stories is beautifully put together. The illustrations are engaging and colorful, and the rhyming text is fun to read. I have to admit I was a bit hesitant about a rhyming Bible story book. To my delighted surprise, the rhyming verse is well done, and it really does add to the enjoyment of the stories for young readers. As soon as I opened up the box for this book, our daughter was quick to take it into the family room and snuggle up and start reading…Enough said!

While this complimentary book was provided for review by LitFuse Publicity Group, no other compensation was given. All remarks are my personal and honest opinions.

  • GREAT STORY TIME FUN

My son and I received this book, and we are excited to continue reading. My son is almost 5, and I have been looking for books to help me teach him about Jesus and God. These stories are easy for him to follow along. He loves hearing all of the stories I remember learning about when I was young. The pictures are cute and inviting, and my son always asks for, “Just one more story!”. This would be the perfect gift for a child!
