A Christiansen Family Novel | When I Fall in Love

Hawaii was the last place Grace Christiansen ever imagined she’d vacation, much less fall in love. But when her family surprises her with a cooking retreat in paradise, she is pulled—or maybe yanked—away from her predictable, safe life and thrown headfirst into the adventure of a lifetime.

Max Sharpe may make his living on the ice as a pro hockey player, but he feels most at home in the kitchen. Which is why he lives for the three-week culinary vacation he takes each year in Hawaii. Upon being paired with Grace for a cooking competition, Max finds himself drawn to her passion, confidence, and perseverance. But just when Grace dares to dream of a future beyond her hometown, Max pulls away.

Wrestling with personal demons, Max fights against opening his heart to a love he knows he should never hope for. And as his secrets unfold, Grace is torn between the safe path in front of her and what her heart truly desires. If love means sacrificing her ideal happily ever after, Grace’s faith will face its toughest test yet.

Press Release

Book lovers and foodies unite!

Susan May Warren hosts Hawaiian Chef Showdown — the perfect pairing for her new book

Seattle: To celebrate her new release, award-winning author Susan May Warren is hosting a contest every foodie will love! When I Fall in Love (Tyndale House Publishers / June 20, 2014 / ISBN 978-1414378435 / $14.99) is the third installment in Warren’s Christiansen Family series and is filled with a sense of adventure — and lots of good food.

From July 24 – August 10, Warren’s readers have the chance to win a KitchenAid mixer by entering the Hawaiian Chef Showdown, hosted on www.susanmaywarren.com. Readers can enter by creating or selecting a recipe using one of the main ingredients mentioned in the book, then pinning the recipe to Pinterest, and sharing it via other social media sites, including their blog. The grand prize winner will receive a KitchenAid mixer and all three books in the Christiansen Family series.

Food bloggers Jackie Brown from Mom on a Mission and Melissa Ringstaff from A Virtuous Woman will be creating custom recipes inspired by the book and giving away some treats of their own. More information about their contributions, as well as more details about the contest, will be available on the book’s website, whenifallinlove.susanmaywarren.com, when the contest launches on July 24. The Hawaiian Chef Showdown is being held in conjunction with the When I Fall in Love blog tour being coordinated by Litfuse Publicity Group.

The recipe contest is tied to the main storyline of When I Fall in Love. In the book, Grace Christiansen finds herself snatched from her everyday routines when her family surprises her with a trip to a cooking retreat in Hawaii. There she meets hockey player Max Sharpe, who’s trying to escape the pressures of his career for a few weeks. As the romance — and the oven — heat up in the kitchen, Grace and Max both will have to learn to step out of their expectations to find the right recipe for true love.

Susan May Warren says cooking has played a role in her own love story. “My husband is a fantastic cook. I’m more of an ‘open the fridge and see what I can create’ kind of gal,” she admits. “We could drive each other crazy — but we create great food and enjoy sitting around with our family, laughing, telling stories and feasting on life. In a similar way, Max and Grace’s story shows us we can be a winning team if we’re willing to embrace the current ingredients before us and enjoy the mess we make together.”

  • GOD IS GUIDING US AND HAS A PLAN FOR US.

I was lucky enough to read the other books in this series, and this book is my favorite so far. I am not sure if it is the setting, Hawaii, or the cooking show competition! Is security worth giving up for love? There were a lot of prayers and the author did a great job of reminding me not to be afraid of the unknown, because God is guiding us and has a plan for us. I am giving this book a 4/5. I was given a copy to review, however all opinions are my own.

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE BY SUSAN MAY WARREN

Have you ever read a book you wish wouldn’t end– it’s that good?! When I Fall In Love by Susan May Warren made me feel that way!! I finished reading the book a couple of days ago. Later that afternoon I was preparing supper and all I could think about was When I Fall in Love and the interactions between Grace and Max. I also enjoyed “catching up with the other Christiansen family members that I haven’t “seen” in a while. :)
Max’s story is tough. He has hard decisions to make that will affect his entire future and that of those he loves. Is it worth it to love and be loved?
Grace is a homebody and an introvert. She’s afraid to fail and at the same time, she’s afraid not to try. When Max dares her to go for her dreams, her whole world is turned upside down.
This is a beautiful story full of hope and encouragement. I recommend you read it… again and again!!

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE – HAWAIIAN CHEF CHALLENGE & KITCHEN AID MIXER

Visiting Deep Haven is like going to a family reunion. Darek, Casper, Grace, Eden and Owen are almost like cousins I get to catch up with every so often, and I miss them as soon as the story is over and begin the wait until the next reunion. So far, we’ve seen Darek and Eden find the love of their life. “When I Fall in Love” begins with Darek and Eve’s wedding. Grace, the shy Christiansen who never finds herself in the spotlight, is given a trip to Hawaii to attend a three-week culinary school as appreciation for catering the wedding. One of Owen’s hockey teammates is also attending and is asked to make sure Grace finds her way around.

For someone who doesn’t like to venture outside of Deep Haven, Grace discovers a whole new world, and a new guy, Maxwell Sharpe, who doesn’t want to open his heart because of the likelihood that he will contract Huntingdon”s disease. Grace and Max can choose the safety and security of their careers, or they can follow what their hearts truly desire. Does God want us to choose the safe path or the path that’s unknown but leads to personal fulfillment? That is what Grace and Max must decide. Grace’s faith is tested in this third installment of Susan May Warren’s The Christiansen Family Series.

Come spend some time with the Christiansens in Deep Haven. You will never want to leave.

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE

Susan May Warren does an amazing job of creating 3 dimensional, likable characters. I reviewed It Had To Be You earlier this year, and was sucked into the storyline and thrilled to discover that it was part of a series. When I Fall in Love was just as intense, as we find out what happens to more of the Christiansen family, and meet new characters.

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE

It feels good to be back with the Christiansen family. Grace loves her home and never wants to leave, but the family pushes her into a trip to Hawaii. Who wouldn’t want a Hawaiian vacation? Grace, that’s who.

Max has demons to work through, and Grace has to deal with a broken heart while helping her sister prepare for her wedding. It appears that there’s no way out of this heartache.

Thank you, Ms Warren, for giving us this family. I’m looking forward to Evergreen.

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE {A LITFUSE REVIEW}

I think this may be my favorite Susan May Warren novel yet. Part of it, I am sure, has to do with having read most of her works now, and this novel had so many of her previous characters included in various scenes. The older Christiansen siblings, of course, who both get married in this novel. But there are also appearances by characters of other Deep Haven books.

  • “WHEN I FALL IN LOVE” BY SUSAN MAY WARREN

While the plot was heartbreaking and realistic, Warren kept the mood under control with her own brand of fun humor. While I felt sad with each character in turn, I also laughed throughout the story. Warren’s quirks and trademark twists kept the pages turning and the mood from becoming too dark. I loved this story – and I hope that you will, too.

  • BOOK REVIEW: WHEN I FALL IN LOVE, BY SUSAN MAY WARREN

Completely and utterly adorable. I absolutely adore Grace and Max and the merry go round of should I, shouldn’t I that they take us on. Throw in the culinary delights of a Top Chef type adventure and you have the makings of a perfect Sunday afternoon cuddle up on the couch and dig into a great book kinda day. I haven’t had a chance to read the other two books in the Christiansen Family novel series, “Take a Chance on Me” or “It Had To Be You” but after reading this one you can be sure that I am going to go pick those up right now.

Fun, light hearted, whimsical and also full of grace and redemption — I loved it and I think you will too!

This was the first Christiansen family novel that I have read and I will try to read them all now. I had a hard time putting this book down after the first few chapters. I love the characters. Max and Grace are wonderful and so are the secondary characters that will have their own stories. I like how Susan worked in how people handle a disease. I look forward to many more romances by Susan May Warren. I received this book for a fair and honest opinion from Litfuse Publicity Group.

I really liked the way Grace developed in character in this installment of the Christiansen family series. The story is an encouragement to homebodies. You just might find love when you are willing to venture out of your comfort zone. While this novel can be read on its own, there is so much from previous novels affecting this story, it would be best to read the series in order.

  • A main theme in this novel has to do with dealing with fear. Grace is clearly afraid of stepping out of her comfortable life, but her siblings practically force her to at least do a little. Max is afraid to love anyone, knowing he has a genetic disease that will almost certainly cut his life short.

How do you trust God outside of what seems comfortable and safe?

This story was full of adventure for the homebody sister, Grace Christiansen. I loved that the story was in the fun state of Hawaii and included a cooking class and competition. Susan May Warren weaves together a beautiful story of how trusting God with your life is really the only way to truly live.

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE – A CHRISTIANSEN FAMILY NOVEL BY SUSAN MAY WARREN

When I Fall in Love is the third book in a series called Christiansen Family novels. In fact, it is the first book I have read written by Susan May Warren. I will not hesitate to read any of her other books! One of the things I liked about this book is that I didn’t feel that I had to have read the first two to know the characters.

I found this book easy to read and very engaging. The setting of the story – Hawaii – what could be better and who doesn’t love food! I enjoyed the way the author wrote about the faith and how a relationship with the Lord is the answer to handling life’s challenges. The main characters, Max and Grace, were very likable, relatable and believable. While at times I wish Grace had been a little stronger and Max had shown a little more faith, I found myself

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE

Susan May Warren writes such delightful books and I am especially loving her Christiansen Family series. She has cooked up another great novel with When I Fall in Love. Grace and Max are both compelling and likable, and Warren creates many humorous moments–and some not so funny ones as well!–in this charming tale. Both of them wrestle with realistic and identifiable issues to which many readers will relate, yet the setting and pace keeps the novel entertaining and upbeat while at the same time providing subtle life lessons.

  • Its nice to a book series concentrate on one family and bring back characters from one book to another. Once again, Susan May Warren does a wonderful job setting a romantic story without adding any cliches. I love cooking, so I liked all the culinary elements to the plot. Just because this is a romantic book doesn’t mean it has to have a “happily every after” ending, as this book’s ending is far from it. If you have become emotionally attached to the characters in the series, you’ll be disappointed or even mad at the ending. Overall, When I Fall in Love is a well-written and realistic romantic story; though it does have a few flaws, the book is still worth reading.

  • GREAT SUMMER READ!

I enjoyed how relatable the characters were and how Max and Grace both avoided falling in love at all costs. They seemed to be too terrified to let someone in and let themselves to be loved. This is something I personally struggle with myself letting someone get close enough and perhaps even falling in love with them. Yes, love could end but it also could last! Very eye-opening messages! I also liked how the book had a Christian message that was spread throughout the novel.

My favorite character was Max Sharpe and I connected with how he held onto the guilt of accidentally injuring Owen and ending his hockey career. The book had a great lesson about dealing with the truth and forgiving yourself and others when they make mistakes.

  • REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY: WHEN I FALL IN LOVE BY SUSAN MAY WARREN

Grace is a classic homebody, but she takes it to the extreme by being too afraid to even have dreams outside of her small comfort zone, let alone follow them. I couldn’t relate to her fear since I love going on adventures, but the author did an excellent job of portraying her anxiety. I admired that she dug deep and allowed herself to reach out and make a new friend in Max as well as experience the Hawaiian vacation, cooking school, and contest. The chemistry between Grace and Max was great, but the fun banter and compassion showed how right they are for each other despite the personal trials they faced. We also follow the story of Grace’s brothers Owen and Casper, and the new girl in town they both “befriend”. I can’t wait for the next book to release to see how their story plays out!

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE BY SUSAN MAY WARREN – REVIEW, CONTEST, & GIVEAWAY!

When I Fall in Love is such a good story. It’s optimistic & hopeful, honest, heartbreaking, and all too realistic. Warren’s characters are easy to fall for, and I know I’ll be coming back for more from the Christiansen family. This title revolves around three things: family, food, and trust in God. Warning: this book will make you hungry and leave you salivating. I only took breaks in reading to watch episodes of Top Chef on my DVR. When I Fall in Love is for fans of family series, Christian romance, and fiction that revolves around food. I highly recommend it!!

  • GRACE’S STORY OF EMBRACING LIFE ABUNDANT.

I made the mistake of looking at the “Hawaiian vacation” plot and thinking this would be a shallow read. It isn’t. This book quickly goes deeper than I had ever expected.

Sure, the story is all about whipping up delicious food and falling in love, but it’s also about learning to see with an eternal perspective and continuing to share your life with others when it gets sad.

This book affirms all that is right with life- awesome food, beautiful Hawaiian landscapes, and a God who helps us commit and recommit over and over as often as needed. And this book also acknowledges all that is wrong with the world, and always points to our Redeemer.

  • The characters are well developed, rather complex, each facing his/her own struggles and fears. As you read, you’ll want to learn some of the lessons they learned: Focus on life. Choose to accept the more that God wants to give you. And turn your fears over to Him, because He’s got this!

  • FAVE FICTION FAMILY!!!

I love this series and I love this family!
I was so excited to get the chance to get to know Grace a little more and finally she gets her story told in When I Fall In Love. I enjoyed delving into Grace’s love of cooking and food. Caution: this book may cause cravings!
I could totally relate to Grace’s fear of getting out of her comfort zone and getting out of Deep Haven…I loved seeing her growth as a character throughout the story. At one point in the story, Grace is devastated by something that happens and she begins to question God and in the end she must make a choice that could change everything!
I also enjoyed the other characters in the story…Raina, Casper, Owen and Amelia- I cannot wait to hear their stories!!! I don’t want this series to end, I love it!!! I think fans of Karen Kingsbury and Debbie Macomber will definitely enjoy Susan May Warren!!!

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE

WHEN I FALL IN LOVE is the third book in the Christiansen Farmily series. Readers will want to read It Had to be You and Take a Chance on Me first to get the stories of Derek and Eden. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Max and Grace, though at times I thought Max acted like a jerk. The secondary story between Owen, Raina, and Casper broke my heart.

Grace is a complex character. Quiet. Scared. But yet willing to step out into the limelight and fight for what she wants at times. Other times she retreats like a mouse into a hole. Max, I totally understood where he came from. I’d be the same in his shoes, I think. But at times he made him act like an insensitive jerk. Casper, oh he was a dear. Raina made a mistake that costs her… and Owen… his story will be powerful when he comes …

  • DEEP YET SWEET – BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Although I typically prefer to read all the books in a series, When I Fall In Love could really be a standalone novel. There are so many lighthearted and sweet moments that you’ll find yourself just smiling as you read. I was a bit torn between the reality of the situations and the improbable conclusions. The side characters are just as interesting as the main characters in this novel. That’s a bonus since it makes me look forward to future stories to be published.

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE BOOK REVIEW

Susan has done it again! I couldn’t put this book down . It was a quick read with a lot going on. The plot and passion that develops between Macx and Grace even though Grace doesn’t want to be in Hawaii. Then Max pulls away. This book keeps you guessing as to what will happen next between these two characters Faith is also very evident and important in this book and I love that Susan intertwines that in this book. Grace had to give up her fears and put her faith and trust in God. I oved that element in this book. This book is definately a quick summer read because you want to know what happens. I couldn’t put it down. A great beach read.

  • REALLY ENJOYABLE!

Susan’s characters are very real. I feel like I know the entire family! I like that she allows them to have struggles and weaknesses that they work through during the story. They are very believable.

This story was interesting and I found myself reading a little extra to see what was going to happen. I also like that there was a parallel story happening with another character from the town while Grace’s story was unfolding. It kept things interesting.

Another fun element in this story was the cooking school and challenge. I personally eat very little seafood, but the recipes still sounded yummy! She should have included a few in the back of the book!

This story was mostly set in Hawaii and then Minneapolis but it’s part of the Deep Haven series…..and oh how I wish I could live in Dee

I fell in love with the story line before the book even got to me! I don’t know if it’s because it was about Hawaii, or if i could relate to grace(before I got married of course). It is an adorable book that would make an even more adorable movie! It is a great Christian romance novel. I haven’t read any other of Susan May Warren’s other books, but i definitely will be getting them ASAP. I recommend this book to ANYONE who wants a good read!

  • BOOK REVIEW: “WHEN I FALL IN LOVE” BY SUSAN MAY WARREN

I’ve been a fan of Susan May Warren and I wasn’t disappointed with this book! I love the way Grace finally let go of her reservations and jumped in…to life. I love the way she could throw things together and make amazing dishes – I want to be a confident in the kitchen like that. I liked how Grace and Max had different cooking techniques but it was those differences that made them such a great team. I love the journey that Grace went through in the book. She let go of her fears and gave them to God. One of my favorite parts was when she came across the church service on the beach and was baptized. Surrendering to God and His plan is such a beautiful thing. There are so many other stories going on at the same time and I want to know how those turn out – Casper, Raina, Owen, and Amelia!

  • REVIEW: WHEN I FALL IN LOVE BY SUSAN MAY WARREN

Despite the title, When I Fall in Love wasn’t the standard lightweight romance (Susan May Warren novels never are). There are family complications in the relationship between Max and Grace, one of whom is Owen, Grace’s younger brother, who used to play on the same pro hockey team as Max. The other complication is Max, who has decided never to marry because of his family history. There’s also a subplot featuring Raina Beaumont (Liza’s niece, from Happily Ever After), and this looks as though it’s setting up the next novel in the series.

  • EXCELLENT CHARACTERIZATION

It’s my opinion that Ms. Warren doesn’t write nonsense. She writes characters so real that you fall in love with them, you dislike them because they annoy the snot out of you, you cheer for them when they’re winning, and you cry when they’re crying. You hurt when they hurt, and when you finally come up from the book to do some mundane thing like cook dinner, you find yourself continually thinking of them. And you have to remind yourself that they’re not real people.

  • A WONDERFUL AND REALISTIC STORY THAT PULLED YOU IN.

I’ve just been introduced to Susan May Warren’s books this year and I have to say I have enjoyed the couple I’ve read immensely. I’ve been hearing high praise for the Christian Family series, so I was excited when this book came up as a review book.

I’ve really come to enjoy the family based series. It helps introduce new characters and keep the old ones around for a while. They are able to show the true family dynamic, that no matter how good the family looks on the outside, things are always going on, on the inside. It is fun to read about families in novels that seem to good to be true at times to slip away, but I’ve really come to enjoy the realistically portrayed ones.

  • ANOTHER WONDERFUL READ FROM SUSAN MAY WARREN!

When I Fall In Love is the third “Christiansen” novel and another stunning read. This series has become one of my favorite family sagas — right up there with Dani Pettrey’s Alaskan Courage — and I can’t wait to read more!

When I Fall In Love was Grace and Max’s story, although parts of the book featured Casper and his possible new relationship. I loved everything about Grace’s and Max’s journey — from the plane ride, to the Hawaii trip, to their nicknames for each other (so cute!). • I have really been enjoying the Christiansen Family series! When I Fall in Love was another great addition. It had lots of humor, sweet moments, inspiration, and characters that I loved! It also had some fabulous food between Grace’s culinary experience and her catering her two sisters’ weddings!

I really loved this story! I pretty much sat down and read it in one sitting and caught myself tearing up in a few places, smiling in plenty of others (if not even chuckling), and in a couple places also getting angry at Owen.

I liked the message, though, about life being worth living, no matter how much time you have or what you suffer through, especially if the suffering draws you closer to Jesus. Max and Grace’s relationship is obviously my favorite part of this book mainly because it started out as a friendship. Their friendship is so endearing and their relationship unfolds just the way an actual relationship would. They are very understanding of one another and supportive of one another as well. Max and Grace both have difficulties and obstacles that they have to overcome, but Max more so than Grace at times because of the decisions that he makes. However, Grace is really good for Max because she keeps him down to earth and really strives to take care of him.

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE (BOOK REVIEW)

Fear and I have been bosom buddies for years. Consequently, I really identified with both main characters in Susan May Warren’s novel, When I Fall in Love. Fear of the future, fear of letting others see the real person behind the mask, fear of rejection, fear of stepping outside your comfort zone – these fears and more initially ruled the characters. And those same fears have often ruled my life.

It’s much better to take a chance and face your fears than to live a life of unfulfilled dreams and hopes.

  • BOOK REVIEW: WHEN I FALL IN LOVE BY SUSAN MAY WARREN

What I love about this book is it is Grace and Max’s story. However, with the Christiansen’s, no one is ever alone. So we are able to see the whole family. But in this novel, Grace and Max come alive.

These two people seem like two ingredients that shouldn’t work. That can’t work. The question is what happens when you throw out your recipe, and instead realize that God’s already working on something amazing?

I have to admit a bit of a bias with these novels. Ms. Warren is from my home state of Minnesota….

However it is the author’s writing that truly makes these books come alive. I feel like I know this family, or perhaps they are a family I REALLY wish I could meet.

It was delightful to read about the family dynamics and how each family member has their own issues they need to deal with. I learned an important lesson about how suffering can either save you or destroy you.

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE BY SUSAN MAY WARREN #BOOKREVIEW

Oh how I want to be part of the Christiansen Family! I love this book. Grace our main character is simple delightful.
The family dynamics and faith of the Christiansen family is what makes this book special. As each character finds God’s voice in their life things work out. The siblings love each other and the parents are their for their kids. This book leaves you questioning your own strength when faced with difficult decisions. Will you run away or stay? I honestly can’t wait for the next book .

  • WHEN I FALL IN LOVE BY SUSAN MAY WARREN

I love Susan May Warren. I have read several of her books and this one is amazing just like the rest. I love how she brings the characters to life. I feel as though I know them from reading so many of the books about them. I read this book in just two days. It’s a terrifically written book and I highly recommend it.

  • LOVE TO COOK!

I enjoyed the book and was sad that I didn’t start at the beginning of the series. But the good news is that was two more books to add to my wish list to start reading next. The characters and situations were very entertaining. I knew that this was something that could be happening to anyone with the twists and turns and surprises around every bend so I totally related. I loved the book and can’t wait to pick up a few more in the series and I will keep my eyes out for the new ones that I coming out after this too! I hope that you pick this up at your local library or bookstore and check it out for yourself. Enjoy this great summer read while meeting the family in this book series!!!

  • This book pulled me in right from the start. It was fun to stop back in and see how Eden and Jace were doing from the book It Had to Be You. It was nice to see them moving along and getting things squared away from their wedding. That said, I think it would be just as easy to jump into this book even without the last one. Everything of note that needed to be known about the last book is mentioned or reviewed so that if a reader is new, nothing will be missed.
