{More about Where Courage Calls}

Her courage and her heart will be tested in ways she never expected…

Beth Thatcher has spent her entire life in the safe, comfortable world of her family, her friends, and the social outings her father’s wealth provides. But Beth is about to leave it all behind to accept a teaching position in the rugged foothills of western Canada. Inspired by her aunt Elizabeth, who went west to teach school several years ago, and gently encouraged by her father, Beth resolves to put her trust in God and bravely face any challenge that comes her way.

But the conditions in Coal Valley are even worse than she’d feared. A recent mining accident has left the town grieving and at the mercy of the mining company. The children have had very little prior education, and many of the locals don’t even speak English. There isn’t even a proper schoolhouse. In addition, Beth’s heart is torn between two young men–both Mounties, one a lifelong friend and the other a kind, quiet man who comes to her aid more than once.

Despite the many challenges, Beth is determined to make a difference in the rustic frontier town. But when her sister visits from the East, reminding her of all the luxuries she’s had to give up, will Beth decide to return to her privileged life as soon as the school year is over?

Press Release

Janette Oke invites readers to join her during live online event

Beloved author and her daughter Laurel Oke Logan to host a Facebook party on March 4

2/5/14 || Seattle: Long-time fans of Janette Oke will be delighted to learn the author  is hosting her first-ever Facebook party alongside her daughter and writing partner, Laurel Oke Logan, on March 4, 2014, at 8:00 PM EST. During the hour-long live online event, Oke and Logan will be introducing readers to their latest release, Where Courage Calls (Bethany House Publishers/February 4, 2014/ available in hardcover, paperback and ebook), a special companion story to the Hallmark Channel’s new When Calls the Heart TV series.

Last fall, the movie When Calls the Heart, produced and directed by Michael Landon, Jr., debuted on the Hallmark Channel. The movie was inspired by Oke’s previously published book by the same name and launched the weekly TV series that premiered on January 11, 2014, and can be seen on Saturday evenings. The storyline and characters in Where Courage Calls are based on the TV series set in the Canadian west.

The authors describe their novel as a “coming-of-age” story with a main theme centered on Philippians 4:13. “Our faith needs to transition from finding our security and safety in our families first, to putting our trust in God Himself who is able to meet all our needs and give us strength,” explains Oke.

“This will be our first Facebook party. How nice that we’re sharing it with one another — and with reader ‘friends’ — both the newest ones who’ve seen Michael’s movies and those who’ve shared the stories for many years,” says Logan. “We are so glad for a chance to converse with you all!”

During the live online event, the authors will host a book-club discussion and answer reader questions. Readers will also have an opportunity to chat with other fans and answer trivia about the authors and their books. Prizes given out during the party will include copies of the paperback version of When Calls the Heart as well as DVDs of the TV movie. At the end of the webcast, the winner of an iPad Mini will be announced. The giveaway is being held in conjunction with the blog tour for Where Courage Calls, coordinated by Litfuse Publicity Group from February 17 through March 4.

“Janette is back writing prairie romance, and we are so excited, with the wonderful help of Litfuse, to bring her into contact with her many fans and give them a chance to ask all their long-held questions,” states Noelle Buss, marketing manager at Bethany House. “We also love that the tradition of writing is carrying on with Laurel Oke Logan, Janette’s daughter and co-author of the book.”

The Facebook party will be hosted on the Bethany House Publishers Facebook Page. Starting February 17, readers will be able to RSVP to join the event and enter the contest for the iPad Mini.

  • COURAGE CALLED AND LEFT A GREAT MESSAGE!!

Beth Thatcher touched me deeply – she had the true heart of a missionary, with a spirit of kindness within a soul full of God’s Holy Word. All those wonderful characteristics plus courage to venture into the unknown enabled her to face challenges with belief that she could be the impetus to change things through her deep faith in God.

  • WHERE COURAGE CALLS BY JANETTE OKE AND LAUREL OKE LOGAN #BOOKREVIEW

Yeap I still love everything that Janette Oke has ever written. That pretty much sums it up! I fell in love with Beth at the very beginning. She’s such a likeable character. I wanted to throttle Edward several times thoughout the book. And Jarrick. . . well let’s just say that is probably one of the most perfect Mounties out there. I really want to get to the next book(hint hint) and see what happens. Obviously, little sister Julie is going to be disappointed in her quest for a certain man, but I personally am seeing her being set up with one Mr Philip. Maybe I’m the only one here, but that would make me smile! So definitely read this book so you can see if the little boy dies from the illegal hooch or if the bootlegger is caught or if Beth falls in love or so many other things!

I was excited to read this book, which is part of the When Calls the Heart series. I like how all of the characters in Janette Oke’s books are very strong. That stays true in this book, too. I like that mother and daughter are writing together. I’m sure they are making some wonderful memories together!

  • WHERE COURAGE CALLS

I really liked Beth. She was strong and determined, but not overly pushy. She wants to teach and doesn’t hate her mother for not wanting that life for her but instead just wants her own life. I love how she went from the conveniences of life to having none of them! There are some romantic elements but I wouldn’t call this a romance book. More of a pioneer book with wonderfully written characters and scenes!
I rate this a 4/5. It is good for preteens to adults. (I’d say 11 and up!)

  • COULDN’T PUT IT DOWN!!

There is romance – we’re just not sure out of the two eligible men who express interest in her will be the ones that capture her heart. This doesn’t become clear until the end, which makes the story more interesting.

I just loved this book!! I give it 5 out of 5 stars and I highly recommend it!

  • LITFUSE PUBLICITY: WHERE COURAGE CALLS BY JANETTE OKE AND LAUREL OKE LOGAN #GROW4CHRIST

I love reading Janette Oke books as they really have a depth that some Christian fiction doesn’t have today, including a chaste romance within the pages of her books, and in this one her daughter was included in the writing of Where Courage Calls. . . . I pretty much stayed up late one night just so I could finish reading it! One reason I enjoy Oke’s books is because it takes me to a country and a place that no longer exists, the Canadian West.

Readers can always be assured of a gentle, charming and inspirational romance when they choose a Janette Oke novel, and with her latest release, “Where Courage Calls,” co-written with her daughter Laurel, they will not be disappointed.

Combining a look at Western Canadian history with a memorable story of courage and romance, this novel is captivating and fast-moving. The descriptions of the time period are fascinating, and the characters are personable. Janette Oke is known as being a wonderful storyteller and this novel shines as one of her best works. It’s great to know that she has also passed down that storytelling skill to her daughter, and the tale here shows that the legacy of these inspirational stories has been passed down to good hands.

When Courage Calls is a companion story to the Hallmark When Calls the Heart TV series. While this story stands alone, having watched the Hallmark series added to my enjoyment. I knew right away that I would like this book better than the movie that was made about Where Calls the Heart.

And it’s not at all a surprise.

Books are almost always better than movies – not to mention, the movie was actually the story Janette and her daughter have written here – when the storyline was supposed to be about Elizabeth and Wynn.

  • A SWEET STORY.

It was enjoyable to dive back into the When Calls the Heart stories. Instead of continuing with the original characters, we are introduced to newer characters. We did see Beth briefly in the original series, but as a little girl. Here, Beth has grown and made it through college and is ready to put her knowledge to use, just like her aunt, in the wilds of the Canadian frontier.

  • Beth was a wonderful character and I also loved the wise Molly, a woman she befriends in Coal Valley. The book and TV show on Hallmark aren’t quite the same and I was disappointed that the book didn’t really have any romance. I really liked the focus on Beth’s strong faith and how she had to learn to depend on God to give her strength when she was at the end of hers.

  • WHERE COURAGE CALLS- BEAUTIFULLY INSPIRATIONAL!

Where Courage Calls is a lovely story detailing the adventures of Beth Thatcher, a privileged young lady on the journey of a lifetime. I have fond memories of reading Love Comes Softly many years ago as a teen and when approached to review Where Calls Courage, I was truly excited! The story had a bit of slow beginning but I quickly fell in love with Beth. She’s an inspiring heroine with tremendous inner strength, a tender heart and an unfailing love of the Lord. I adored the characters! My favorites were Molly, the town “mother”, Frank, the endearing Italian immigrant, and Jarrick, the dashing RCMP.

  • REVIEW – WHERE COURAGE CALLS

Its been awhile since I have read the first book in the series, but Where Courage Calls follows the same basic plot, but only with new main character (though they are related). The young schoolteacher traveling to a small town to teach has been done to death in Christian novels, but the authors ignored all the typical cliches and wrote an intriguing story with likeable characters. Will this be the final book in the series? I hope not, as I enjoy Janette Oke’s storytelling.

  • BOOK REVIEW: “WHERE COURAGE CALLS” BY JANETTE OKE AND LAUREL OKE LOGAN

Welcome back to Coal Valley. The Oke’s have done a previous six book series that featured Elizabeth. ”Where Courage Calls” starts a new series that features Elizabeth’s niece, Beth. Beth wants to be a school teacher and Coal Valley is the place to start. The Oke’s have given us plenty of wonderful characters to fall in love with, lots of adventure and romance. There is a lot going on in Coal Valley and the Oke’s know how to take us through each event by letting us in on the lives of the participants. This is a great start to a new series. I have enjoyed it immensely and I look forward to the next book to see what will happen with Beth.

  • READING A BOOK BY JANETTE OKE IS LIKE GOING HOME

Janette and her daughter Laurel continued the standard of quality that was set with the Love Comes Softly series with their newest book, When Courage Calls. This book is longer than Janette’s other books, the length lent to the opportunity for the authors to spend on character development and character relationships. This is not a fast paced book, if it was I think it would take away from the heart of the story. Life on the Canadian Prairie (as well as the American Prairie) was not fast paced, like today’s world. It was hard. The story really did give the reader that impression. I’m looking forward to the sequel, when it becomes available, because I’m certain that Elizabeth’s story has not yet been completed.

  • LOVED NEWEST BOOK BY JANETTE OKE AND DAUGHTER

It has been awhile since I have read a book by Janette Oke but “Where Courage Calls” reminded me why I once enjoyed them so much. In fact, this collaboration between Janette and her daughter Laurel may just be the best one yet. I enjoyed the fact that although there were several men who showed interest in Beth, the story was so much more than a romance and actually left that aspect unresolved for the most part. I loved Beth’s determination to fulfill her obligations despite adverse conditions. I also liked the way she did everything she could to help the children and the miners and managed to bring the entire community together to help each other. I was honestly sorry to see the book come to an end and look forward to hopefully reading more about Beth and her new friends in Coal Valley in the near future.

  • WHERE COURAGE CALLS

I enjoyed this book once I got into it. But Beth and Julie having the same names as the Characters in “When Calls The Heart” series was confusing. But I do hope this mother-daughter team write another book to let us know if Beth & Jarrick get married and to see if Beth returns to Coal Valley.

  • If, like me, you grew up reading When Calls the Heart (and the rest of the Canadian West series) in junior high, you’ll want to read this newest offering from Janette and daughter Laurel Oke Logan. Where Courage Calls is the story of Beth Thatcher, the “niece” of Elizabeth Thatcher from the first four books. It’s a special companion story to the Hallmark TV series.

While there are many similarities initially, to the two women’s tales (pampered young lady leaves overprotective family to go teach somewhere uncivilized) this book is worthy of reading on it’s own merit. I knew I liked it 23 pages in, when I ran across the words, “…we spend the rest of our lives basing the way we think about our families on what we thought happened–instead of what really did.” Um, yeah. Guilty! I could go off on a tangent there, but I won’t. Suffice it to say, I love these little nuggets of wisdom that made me think as I enjoyed a good story.

liked how Elizabeth took on the town and brought a sense of grace and upstanding to their schools, while also being changed from the person she was when she got there. And there is certainly room for further stories in the series.

  • WHERE COURAGE CALLS

It had been some time since I had read one of Janette Oke’s books. I wasn’t disappointed, She still can write the story in a way that draws you into the story line. The characters are interesting and evolve as the story unfolds. The authors daughter joins her in writing this book but the book flows easily without any interruptions. It will be great to see what these two authors put out next,

This is a interesting Christian based book with some romance, adventure and how one must grow in God’s grace trusting that he alone knows what is best for us. I recommend this book!

  • WHERE COURAGE CALLS BY JANETTE OKE AND LAUREL OKE LOGAN BOOK REVIEW

Janette Oke Strikes again! In this heart wrenching tale of a woman following her calling, you will laugh, cry, and smile. This book had wonderfully created characters with inspiring personalities and a plot that kept me interested from start to finish. I am fully convinced that Janette Oke could make a story about a potato interesting. She really is a fantastic author, and her historical fiction has no competition. I can’t recommend this book enough.

I have read most of Janette Oke’s books including Dana’s Valley that she also co-wrote with her daughter Laurel, because I just love the story lines and once again I was not disappointed. Beth feels that her mother is trying to dictate her future and comes to realize that she first must submit to God then peace will come with other relationships. I can definitely relate to this story as I have been at odds with my own mother trying to tell me what she thought I should do. This is a great story about courage, misunderstandings, and romance.

  • WHERE COURAGE CALLS BY JANETTE OKE & LAUREL LOGAN OKE BOOK REVIEW

This new companion novel to the When Calls The Heart Hallmark movie and T.V. series, is sure to be a delightful read for any fans of Janette Oke, as well as fans of the movie adaptions of her books. Filled with lots of prairie close-knit family together-ness and courage to boot, join Beth Thatcher on an unforgettable journey where she learns to trust God in every situation, knowing He is working all things out for good.

This was a very nice novel, which I greatly enjoyed reading during the time when the T.V. series based on Janette Oke’s book Where Calls The Heart, was airing each Saturday evening. I had already come to love the T.V. series and fallen in love with the characters, so I was very enthusiastic to read the book that inspired the series.

  • “WHERE COURAGE CALLS” BY JANETTE OKE AND LAUREL OKE LOGAN

My favorite part of Where Courage Calls was the way that Elizabeth was determined to help the children of Coal Valley as much as possible before the school year was out. She put the children before her time, her health, and her safety. In doing so she not only taught the children but assisted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in solving a major crime ring that was based out of Coal Valley. The foreshadowing and building of suspense involving the crime was well written and added a great angle to the story.

I’m happy to be adding Where Courage Calls to my Janette Oke collection, and I look forward to reading it over and over again – just as I have all the other Oke stories.

  • I AM COMPLETELY HOOKED ON THIS SERIES!!!

I absolutely LOVE this series both the books and the TV series! I love the strong determination that Elizabeth digs deep to find especially when all the odds are against her. She refuses to accept failure at any turn and her love of not only teaching but the children and women she meets is apparent in the many times she goes out of her way to help people in need. Even though she comes from a wealthy upbringing, she becomes one of the women and gains so much more insight into her own strength and character, especially when her sister comes for a visit and gets more than she bargained for. I easily give this one a 5 out of 5 stars!

  • This sounds wrong, but with my work at the food pantry out here in a rural (but not nearly as poverty-stricken) Southern Rocky Mountain region, I couldn’t help but picture some of the women I’ve met through the pantry as I read this novel. The town where Beth is teaching is in need of so much more than just some readin’ ‘ritin’ and ‘rithmetic — there are hungry children, impossible-to-pay medical bills, distrust, prejudice — in short, a society not all that different from ours today.

  • BOOK REVIEW: “WHERE COURAGE CALLS” BY JANETTE OKE AND LAUREL OKE LOGAN

I’ve watched When Calls the Heart and was excited to be able to review this book and see how Beth’s story continues. Last year was my first year teaching – I was able to connect with Beth as she made it through her first year. I couldn’t help but get emotional when she had made it to the last day of class! Her students and the mothers gave her the box of letters and then Esther shared how she had changed since Beth arrived. Beth was willing to take a leap to pursue what she felt God had called her to do. She was willing to give up the comforts of home and what she knew. Though I had a hard time getting into the story at first, this was an overall good read. It’s a great story of courage and trusting God and making a difference through small acts and simply caring for people.

I have to say, I really enjoyed this book, of course I have read a few of Janette Oke’s books before and I just love her style of writing. This book, Where Courage Calls is no different. Travel on a journey of self-discovery as Beth learns to follow God’s leading as she accepts the call to become a school teacher in a mining community ripped by grief. Grow with Beth and the rest of the town as they put back together the pieces of their hearts, learn to accept others and learn to reach out to those around them. • WHERE COURAGE CALLS

Where Courage Calls is classic Janette Oke, featuring a Western Canadian setting, a faith-filled heroine, and endearing children. It’s also a bit slow moving, and I did struggle to keep reading at times. • WHAT COURAGE CAN DO

I really do admire the women of this time frame because I don’t know if I could have been so gracious and have the will to go on when it was so hard, especially the people in the mines.

It’s a very dirty job and I know something about stuff like that. I was born in West Virginia and my grandfather worked in one of the steel mills. They are very dirty also and all the houses that were near the mill were black just about, especially on the roofs and porches. So, I can imagine how much worse it was back then in the mines.

It’s really a lovely story and yes, there is romance involved, one she doesn’t want and one that she does. If you love stories from this time period, this one will be one of your favorites.

Beth’s romantic pursuits take a backseat in this story. I appreciated that, since it seemed she had her hands full with all of the other business going on. There were several twists in the story that kept things going. As can be expected by author Janette Oke, the beautiful prose in Where Courage Calls is breathtaking. I could almost hear the whispers of the breeze in the trees, or the babble of the brook as Beth took a stroll through the woods. The characters seemed like real people I could touch and feel. After turning the last page, I already missed them!

True to Janette-Oke form, an enjoyable read with great writing.

This was a heartwarming story about personal growth with a smidgen of romance thrown in. The main character, Beth, was a little too melancholy for me, but she had a lot of heart. I enjoyed watching the small town of Coal Valley revive under her influence. There were also elements of mystery that kept me wondering until the end. To me, the biggest mystery of all was who Beth was going to end up falling in love with–or if she was at all. The answer surprised me.

I have been enjoying Janette’s books since I was a teenager and this new book did not disappoint me in one bit. I like how her books are very easy read as well as touching. You fall in love with the characters from page one and feel as if they are your friends and you have known them you whole life. It was nice that this book was written by both her and Laurel, I think it just added to the book. Beth was a strong woman to move to a place unknown to her and such a rough place.
