{More about The Heiress of Winterwood}

Pride goes before the fall . . . but what comes after?

Darbury, England, 1814

Amelia Barrett gave her word. Keeping it could cost her everything. An heiress to an estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend’s baby. She’ll risk everything to keep her word—even to the point of proposing to the child’s father—a sea captain she’s never met.

When the child vanishes with little more than an ominous ransom note hinting at her whereabouts, Amelia and Graham are driven to test the boundaries of their love for this little one.

Amelia’s detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she’s forced to examine her soul and face her one weakness: pride.

Graham’s strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline. And away from the family he has sworn to love and protect.

Both must learn to have faith and relinquish control so they can embrace the future ahead of them.

  • THE HIERESS OF WINTERWOOD

When it comes to Christian fiction, Regency set stories are probably my favorite. The Heiress of Winterwood didn’t disappoint! It was a touch different from the average Regency with a *bit* of adventure and mystery.

  • THE STORY COMPLETELY BLEW ME AWAY!

The Heiress of Winterwood starts off with a good prologue, but it was the first chapter that really grabbed my attention. I could tell Amelia was a great woman right away. I loved how protective she was of Lucy and that she was willing to do anything to care and raise her. I also loved her tenacity. Graham was another wonderful character. I loved how real he was about his grief over losing his wife and it was nice to see his character grow.

  • This was a very exciting and intriguing adventure that I really enjoyed reading. The characters and their relationships to each other were very well done, I thought. While some of the dialogue felt a little bit awkward (not consistently, just in a few places), the interactions resulting from differing personalities, histories, and personal struggles were very deep and believable. And while a love story does develop over the course of the book, it was a far cry from the typical sappiness fest that books like this all too often turn into. The love story was very low-key, and felt very natural, while the action of the story was kept at the forefront. Plus, it gets bonus points from me for being unique and original!Written by enterthewriterslair.blogspot.com on April 30, 2013 | e

Amelia is a strong, independent female character, which you don’t always find in romance novels. She sizes up the situation, decides on a course of action, and acts accordingly. Graham is the typical romantic hero, but with a realistic twist that saves the novel from becoming too sappy.

Fans of Regency-era novels, Jane Austen, and clean romances will love this debut novel.

You will swoon! This book is all about keeping promises, trusting in the Lord and following your heart. There is action (kidnappings!), love (that kiss on p. 309!) and intrigue (Who can be trusted??). The Heiress of Winterwood is a stunning peek into the life of the privileged (think Downton Abbey) and an adventure that will take your breath away!

  • WONDERFUL DEBUT NOVEL

I find it difficult to believe that “The Heiress of Winterwood” is Sarah Ladd’s debut novel! Its descriptive language just flows and the story pulled me in from the very first few pages. I loved Amelia and Graham – their strengths and their weaknesses made them so humanly believable. I particularly liked Amelia’s determination to keep her promise to her friend despite what everyone else thought was best for her. Graham’s integrity and protectiveness toward Amelia made him a real hero in my eyes.

There is a lot of action, adventure, and intrigue, as well as romance and tender family moments. • INTRIGUING AND PROMISING DEBUT

Sarah Ladd deftly employs the rhetoric of the Regency era while maintaing a flow of dialogue that is natural and layered. Her integration of period details is executed with precision, enough to establish the setting but not to overwhelm with description. The synopsis alludes to a suspenseful overtone, but the highlighted plot does not appear until the last third of the book. This is no fault of the author but it does affect the pacing of the book, especially since what readers expect to happen does not come to fruition until the romantic tension between the leads is nearly ratified. The interactions between Amelia and Graham are limited, with few scenes not withstanding, to the confines of societal propriety. An intriguing debut from a promising new voice in Regency era fiction.

A riveting, and page turning read, with a heart-stopping mystery, and intricately woven story threads. Amelia was an excellent heroine, with pluck, and beautiful heart to fiercely protect those she loved.

This book had terrific flow and pacing, that made this book nearly impossible to put down, there was plenty going on, and lots of well developed side characters, both good and bad.

  • THE HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD BY SARAH E. LADD

I am so glad I’m not an heiress in 1814 England. I am too strong willed to have to follow my families expectations on who to marry and how to live.

Sarah Ladd did a great job keeping me interested in the story and the mystery of who kidnapped Lucy. Just when I thought I had it figured out the story changed just enough to keep me guessing. I felt like Graham’s feeling for Amelia developed a little too quickly for no more than they were actually written together. But at the same time, their relationship is believable considering Amelia took care of his wife and child.

Other than the quick development between Amelia and Graham, I think this is a great story. The plot was well written and there was enough mystery and action to keep you interested in the story and anticipating the outcome.

This is the first book by Sarah Ladd that I have read. The Heiress of Winterwood is book one in her Whispers on the Moors series. With this first installment, Sarah has gained a devoted fan in myself. She writes with such description that I could almost smell and could picture vividly the subject matter at the time. Sarah allows you to be involved in the story through each character’s point of view. The story is one filled with struggles in faith, romance, danger, greed and heart pounding emotion. Sarah has really written a historical fiction novel that really has it all including tension filled action. You won’t want to miss this one! I can’t wait for the rest of this series. What a joy to have discovered Ms Ladd and her gift!

  • REGENCY PERFECTION

Sarah Ladd’s debut novel The Heiress of Winterwood is a wonderfully compelling addition to this timeperiod. I was swept into the story from the earliest pages. The plot tightened as it proceeded until it practically spiraled to an ending I literally could not put down. The characters are compelling and richly drawn. The setting is one that makes me long to hop on a place to England and explore a castle or two and Liverpool. And the romance is absolutely perfect. Add in a wonderful spiritual thread that had me nodding as the heroine and hero discover more of God’s character and nature and the book left me wanting more when I reached the end. I cannot wait for the next book!

I am a huge fan of period fiction and of Jane Austen’s work, and this book has all the elements of both that I have come to love. This debut novel was a quick read with interesting characters, which I want to learn more about. I look forward to reading the other books in this series, especially if they are going to follow the lives of Captain Sterling, Amelia and little Lucy. If you love historical fiction, reminiscent of Jame Austen’s work, this is one you won’t want to miss.

Amelia and Graham find themselves in an awkward situation and seemingly the only way out was an even more awkward situation, marry each other, even though they are strangers. And as we follow their journey we see how much their struggle with doubt, pride, uncertainty as well as trusting the Lord for their difficult situations. • SWEET & ENTERTAINING CHRISTIAN FICTION

The Heiress of Winterwood was a delightful story, with characters who were well-drawn and likeable, and with a villain or two who were quite the opposite! Sarah Ladd’s Amelia is as brave and caring as she is beautiful, and Captain Graham Sterling is an excellent romantic lead, with a heart of integrity. Right from the outset, these two are thrust together through unfortunate life events, and the tension not only between them but in their circumstances remains high throughout the novel. While I wouldn’t consider this a taut thriller, there is rarely a dull moment, and I found my attention fully engaged at all times.

Sarah Ladd has written a pleasant, enjoyable title, and I can heartily recommend it to my audience, as well as anyone who enjoys Christian or Regency-era fiction.

With every book I pick up by a debut author I have a slight moment of hesitation wondering if I will like the book. This book was no different but that doubt fled as soon as I started to read and I began to fall in love. The plot is definitely unique and intriguing (though just a heads up, so you aren’t surprised like I was, the kidnapping that the synopsis mentions doesn’t happen till well into the story!) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were great as well and though I didn’t form an emotional attachment to any of them I still really liked them and thought they were were beautifully written. In short I liked almost everything about this book from the plot to the setting to the characters and I will definitely looking for more from this author in the future!

  • BOOK REVIEW: “THE HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD” BY SARAH LADD

Wow, what a premise. Amelia promises to take care of her deceased friend’s baby. To do so she needs a husband so she proposes to a widower sea-captain who is still mourning his deceased wife. Then the baby is kidnapped. Now these two strangers not only must turn to each other for support but to God to heal them of their wounds and to bring the baby back. And on top of everything this is a romance. I think Ms. Ladd has done a great job with this story. Yes, there are moments when it seems a bit slow however we do need time to sit back and breathe a little before the story takes back off again. Great characters, great plot with plenty of twists and turns equals a great read.

  • SURPRISING ROMANCE

As I read, the rewarding thing for me was watching Amelia take charge of her life and do an excellent job. I found that the story kept my attention. There is a surprising love story with a hero, a kidnapping, a totally evil fiancé who Amelia sends packing, and an arduous trip by coach and horses. For me, the part I loved was reading about a young woman who turned the mores of her culture upside down and came through with a man she loved, the baby she wanted to raise, her home and her fortune. That was satisfying.

    I do recommend this book.

  • FOR ALL JANE AUSTEN FANS.

I was immediately drawn in my Amelia. She is a supremely like able character, intriguing. Graham was equally well written. I fell in love with both of them. Amelia is so determined, so focused on her dream of raising her friend’s baby. Graham is lost and unsure of how to care for his daughter but a very capable sea captain. Very intriguing in his own right as a character. In fact, I would love a “prelude” book more about his story and Katherine’s. The whole book felt very reminiscent of Jane Austen to me. I thought it was a beautiful love story with a great dose of intrigue and a hint of danger as well. I am excited to see where the next chapter of this story goes. There are so many characters that I would love to see more of–Helena, the cousin; the Sulter family, even brother William.

  • INTRIGUING FROM PAGE ONE!

This book starts out dramatically and it never stops being dramatic to the very last page. In this case, however, drama is good and it will captivate you and hold your attention. This is not your typical romance novel. Yes, there is romance in the best sense of the word, but there is also suspense, which makes this book an excellent read.

This book is filled with family dysfunction, great love, and mystery. There is a kidnapping, betrayal and more. I wish to warn you that you may not be able to put this book down!

  • To describe this story in one word: intriguing. The plot is incredibly unique and heart wrenching. Amelia will do anything for the child she loves, especially since they share a common bond: they both lost their mothers at young ages. The people in Amelia’s life, however, all seem to want Amelia to give up the child and do what is “best” for the family, which would certainly not be best for the child. It can be a serious struggle to give up your family’s desires to pursue your own, especially when one’s family doesn’t understand or support your dreams. I’m a lot different than my own relatives, and while we’ve always agreed to disagree, I would absolutely give up a relationship with them rather than give up a relationship with my family {Jason, Preston and Bug}.

The Heiress of Winterwood is a quick romantic and suspenseful read. The characters are easy to like or hate (as in the case of the villains). The writing style holds true to the Regency era. If you would like a touch of Austen with a faith-infused message, then you will enjoy this novel.

  • THE HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD

The Heiress of Winterwood by Sarah Ladd fits right into the regency genre to go along with authors like Austen and Heyer. It had the feel of a Heyer novel with it’s twists to the plot and bit of adventure to go along with the romance.

I immediately fell in love with Amelia and Graham. Both are strong characters with flaws–which they must overcome. The storyline is strong and believable. The characters are real and likable.

This book had the perfect blend of romance and mystery. While some thought the book was a little off and the other characters undeveloped, I felt that all the characters had just the right amount of information shared about them.

  • NICE ROMANCE MIXED WITH MYSTERY

Don’t you just love stubborn people? Amelia Barrett has been left the task of raising her dead friend’s baby, Lucy and she loves her so much that she will even marry the baby’s father, a sea captain named Graham Sterling to keep the child with her.

What she doesn’t know is that the man she is suppose to marry, Edward, is only after her money, fame and fortune. He could care less about Amelia or Lucy. Well, he didn’t count on Graham seeing right thru him so he accepts Amelia’s proposal so that his child will not be raised by a man like Edward.

Unfortunately, neither of them know the extent that Edward will go to for revenge.

You are gonna love all the mischief and mayhem that Edward causes and it will bring Amelia, Lucy and Graham even closer together.

Graham Sterling has put up guarded walls. Amelia has tried to keep in control of what she would like to happen. Will they yield to the One who has the best for them? As they open their hearts, they find who they really are.
I like the extreme loyalty of the staff at Winterwood Manor. They carry on amid the confusion of those seemingly in charge. Amid the strife and clamor, daily needs are seen to and little Lucy is cared for. This novel is very well-written, concise and riveting as the daily happenings are portrayed in the lives of these families.

  • REVIEW – HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD

I was surprised to learn that this is the first book by author Sarah Ladd as she seems to already be a veteran in historical writing. I can easily see the book being adapted into a feature film. Overall, The Heiress of Winterwood is well written romantic tale full of twists and turns.

  • A COMMENDABLE DEBUT

“The Heiress of Winterwood” is a promising beginning to Sarah Ladd’s new series “Whispers on the Moors.” As a fan of period British dramas, this novel satiated my hunger for a elegant English love story, especially in the absence of Downton Abbey. There are hints of Austenesque qualities in Ladd’s writing that surface throughout the pages. The novel is a fairly fast read with elements of predictability and unpredictability in the plot. The first half of the plot is as refined and placid as the stately scene on the front cover, but dark clouds soon surface and make way for a storm of danger.

  • THE HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD BY SARAH LADD

This was an exciting read that I managed to read in one day. I could not put it down! It was full of action and kept you guessing as to who was responsible for the kidnapping. The two main characters both showed resistance in opening their heart and their trust to anyone. The author writes that when the characters putting all into God’s will their hearts softened willingly them to trust in their loved one again.

  • BOOK REVIEW: THE HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD BY SARAH E. LADD

I connected deeply with Amelia as I have been struggling in my faith of late. I’ve said it before but it surprises me when reading a work of Christian fiction and there is a message that within its pages that seems like it was written to speak to me. To my heart. To my doubts and hopes and dreams and fears. This, The Heiress of Winterwood, was one of those books.

  • LOVELY DEBUT!

I really enjoyed this debut novel by Sarah E. Ladd. The regency style has really seemed to be coming to the forefront after the success of authors like Klassen.

Heiress of Winterwood had all the right parts to make a readable and pleasurable, even if not always realistic, story: a loyal woman determined to keep her deathbed promise to her friend, despite the cost and embarrassment to herself; a young, widowed father determined never to marry again; a thwarted, thus vengeful, suitor; a fortune at stake; and an innocent child in the middle of it all. Add the unhappy extended family in there…along with the blossom of love, and you’ve got yourself a good book.

  • “THE HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD” BY SARAH E. LADD

I couldn’t put this book down. It’s a great love story with a bit of adventure and suspense thrown in for good measure, all swirled around with wise faith lessons. Relationships are key in this book – those between husband and wife, parent and child, neighbor to neighbor, friend to friend, mentor to mentee, even master and servant. Ladd writes each one with wisdom and drama by turn so that each interaction provides action to the plot. While in some books this type of ‘action’ makes for a dull read, in The Heiress of Winterwood it is these very relationships that provide both the action, the suspense, the drama, and the lessons learned.

This is definitely a top book of 2013 so far.

  • A WRITER’S REVIEW OF THE HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD BY SARAH E. LADD

I LOVED this book, and not just because Sarah is my friend. The woman knows how to put together a well written plot with super-awesome main characters and the right thoughts and feelings for those characters to have at just the right time. The emotional journey and spiritual journey of a character are two of the things I’m super picky about when reading any book. There are other things, but if this is off, I end up hating the book. The beginning, the ending and everything in between was just right. It was so much like a mix of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer that I couldn’t help be pleased.

  • THE HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD, BY SARAH E. LADD

From the moment I laid eyes on the gorgeous cover of this book, I wanted to read it. I would have read this book in one sitting, but I had to get up early the next morning. I still ended up reading far longer than I should have –well into the aforesaid morning. The Heiress of Winterwood was extremely hard to put down. For me, it was a drop everything and read kind of story, and I picked up where I left off as soon as I got the kids out the door the next day. Sarah Ladd knows how to write a great story!

  • FANTASTIC REGENCY ERA ROMANCE FULL OF INTRIGUE AND FAITH VALUES!

The journey towards absolute trust in God + idyllic setting + good vs. evil + sweet romance + a plethora of interesting characters = a new favorite novel and five star read!!
Many plot twists occur which have us losing breath as we try and keep up with Amelia’s headstrong ways as one disaster after the other happen at breakneck speed – which is why I could not put this novel down! I loved how the faith factor was skillfully inserted, both Amelia and Graham have to mend their ways and the novel shows how they approach their faith in order for them to have a happy outcome.
The love story was achingly slow, as we knew these two are made for each other, but it was a nice backdrop to the fast paced intrigue. A fantastic debut for author Sarah Ladd, and I CANNOT wait to see what is next..

  • WHEN YOU NEED A DOWNTON ABBEY STYLE FIX

I loved the love and loyalty Amelia Barrett displayed in keeping her friend’s promise and raising a baby that wasn’t her own. She was willing to risk everything–her inheritance, her reputation, her engagement, her family–to keep the child. It’s a position few of us would have the guts to take, and I admired her boldness at proposing marriage to a man she’d never met for the benefit of his daughter.

Ladd creates a believable conflict between the characters and provides enough suspense at just the right time to keep the pages turning. My only regret when I read these sorts of stories is that they’re over too soon because I couldn’t put them down.

  • THE HEIRESS OF WINTERWOOD

Sara E Ladd has written a solid and enjoyable debut novel. Set in the Regency time period, the expected tension exists between Amelia and her parents regarding the man they have chosen for her to marry, as does the extreme emphasis on social standing and financial stability. However, Ladd brings a fresh twist to this plot with a deathbed promise and a baby that Amelia is determined to raise.

This book, in its entirety, was a pleasure to read, and has made it to the coveted will read again spot on my bookshelf. It’s not every day you get the chance to meet your new favorite author! It’s easy to see why The Heiress of Winterwood was the winner of the 2011 Genesis Award ~ Ms. Ladd did an excellent job.
