World View by Marvin Olasky

If we reacted to our common culture with not just biblical facts, but also grace and compassion, what would our world be like? Marvin Olasky explores the answer to this question and more in his new book, World View. While regular readers of World Magazine may remember some of the columns contained in World View, never before has a collection of Marvin’s work over the last 25 years been curated like this. These 60 columns cover a wide variety of issues that remain relevant today, ranging from political issues such as immigration and welfare to social issues including homosexuality and racism. Marvin also touches on everyday conversations such as movie reviews, career paths and the impact of Millennials. While reading his commentary, readers will learn a new way to consider and respond to any situation in a way that lives out all biblical virtues, including mercy and grace as well as truth.

World View: Seeking Grace and Truth in Our Common Life (New Growth Press, November 2017)

How could our world be different if Christians were recognized for not only speaking the truth, but also demonstrating mercy?

What would our lives be like if we reacted to our common culture with not just biblical facts, but also grace and compassion?

For more than 25 years, Marvin Olasky has offered this kind of viewpoint in his columns as the Editor-in-Chief of World Magazine, the leading news magazine written with a Christian perspective. In this collection of far-ranging columns, Olasky’s commentary on world events and affairs, as well as his own personal interactions, encourages readers to respond with both grace and truth in every encounter.

A leading voice for standing for biblical truth in the public square, Olasky also believes Christians should incorporate the biblical virtues of humility, kindness, and mercy in all of life. His call for biblical values to include both truth and mercy makes his voice stand out in a world that often falsely divides those goals and settles for a poor imitation of the robust Christianity described in Scripture. These short and punchy columns offer readers a new way to consider challenges in today’s world and shows them how to respond to any encounter biblically, but not hysterically, providing a wake-up call for the complacent, while also calming the frantic.

This is an utterly fascinating book filled with wisdom, wit and insight. I love how the author stands up for Biblical truths but in such a way that is both warm and gentle, not in your face and he encourages his readers to do the same. Complied from articles written by Martin since 1996 this book covers such a large scope of issues and it is interesting to see how relevant they are in today’s world. Well written and easy to read this book is very engaging and is much needed in the world we live in today.

I enjoyed Marvin’s book immensely; it is well written and very easy to read. It is broken down into little articles–each, one to three pages long. This is a book one could read a little at a time (a snippet hear and a snippet there) or finish in a few days. I enjoyed reading it in only a few days.

Marvin gives some really wise insight into some very relevant and hot topic issues that our culture faces today. I really appreciated reading Marvin’s insightful views and opinions–especially coming from a Christian.

This book, as you may have guessed, is deep. It’s good. I didn’t quite understand everything because as I said, I need more time to delve into it. Overall though, I’m greatly impressed, glad I read the book, and know I gained a lot of good information.

World View is an excellent collection of columns written by Marvin Olasky of World Magazine. I read World Magazine regularly when I lived at my parents’ house as they had a subscription, and I always had the greatest appreciation for Marvin Olasky’s honesty, wit, and truth found in his columns. This book is easy to read and very thought provoking in its challenge to Christians in today’s society. Olasky is very convicting in his challenges to Christians on how to act both in truth and grace when our beliefs and values are challenged and mocked by culture. This collection of columns is separated into five sections…

I have always enjoyed Mr. Olasky’s articles in World Magazine. He has insightful ideas and looks at everything through a Biblical lens.

This book is actually a compilation of articles he wrote between the years 1997 – 2016. I found it very interesting to see what he was writing about in these years. Some things are very different and yet some things never change.

Because this book is short “chapters” of articles, it’s very easy to read a couple or read a lot. I enjoyed his writing style and the fact that he stands on the Word of God in his beliefs and his world view. Each article is thought provoking and quite interesting.

I enjoyed this book a lot and I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

World View is an impressive book that not only offered encouragement, but made look at a lot of things differently. Olasky is an excellent communicator, the chapters deep and thought-provoking. What Olasky does so effectively is bring culture, politics, current events, and spirituality together and look at them from a biblical perspective. I think every Christian would find this book very beneficial, whether interested in politics or not. I couldn’t help but think of the Charles Sheldon classic, In His Steps, because Olasky’s writing made me focus on how Jesus would minister and teach in today’s cultural/political environment.

These columns are short (only 2-3 pages long) but packed with Biblical wisdom and practical insights. The author exemplifies how to confidently speak Biblical truths in love with grace, respect, and humility and to passionately live out conviction with integrity, mercy, and compassion.

This book will help you examine your attitude, speech, and conduct and ask yourselves whether you are helping or hindering the cause of Christ. Stay faithful to God’s Word and stay grace-filled in God’s love. Check out this thought-provoking, Biblically sound, Christ-centered book on social issues and Christian living! Marvin Olasky did an excellent job of balancing truth with grace.

Since I’ve never subscribed to World, I loved having such pivotal articles all in one place . These will help many believers think about the world around them and how the Gospel affects us all. REadable chapters but this book needs the reader to think more deeply about what is written.

In one way, the book is a quick read being split up into so many columns. Yet, these are columns that need to be read carefully and thought about, so in that way it is not a quick read if you want to get the most out of the book. Regardless, there is a lot of great thoughts in this book that make it worth the time to read.

This collection of articles is written from a Christian viewpoint and covers a wide range of topics. Although one can read it cover to cover, it is really more of a reference resource. Whether you agree with Olasky’s views or not, his writings really encourage one to think.

I really enjoyed this book! I found myself thinking about the articles even days after I read them, and I really loved how he brought Scripture into so many of them. Some of them even felt devotional in nature while being very applicable to everyday life. I am already planning to gift this book to several people in my life that I know will appreciate it because of their interest in politics and in living life as a true follower of Jesus.

As an avid reader of World, I instantly recognized Marvin Olasky’s name. I have long enjoyed his balanced and thoughtful columns and articles in World. This book brings together a collection of Mr. Olasky’s columns from the past few decades, and it just goes to show that nothing is new under the sun in the midst of huge changes. It’s amazing that an article written in 1995 is just as relevant as one written a few months ago, or even last year.

Each article is crafted to make the reader to think and ponder their convictions in light of a Biblical worldview. l

Dr. Olasky’s writing provides a balance of heartfelt conviction and reflective compassion, expressed through a genuine attitude of humility. Olasky’s Insight inspires the reader to take positive action, in areas of ethical commitments and biblical precepts. His compassion captures my own, often unspoken, deep convictions.

In today’s contentious political environment where reason, sound inquiry, and critical thinking seem to have been overwhelmed by name-calling, shouting, and protests, Marvin Olasky offers a breath of fresh air in World View: Seeking Grace and Truth in Our Common Life.

Olasky, the former editor of World Magazine, offers 58 of his columns from 1997-2016 for our consideration. His reasoning and arguments remind me of the home school debate league our son participated in, where debaters were required to understand both sides of the issue. He suggests how we as Christians might understand and discuss current political issues, usually offering information or facts that were new to me.

Olasky does a good job with addresses the issues and sharing Godly wisdom.  With the layout of the book, it is so easy to find information that you are needing/looking for right at the moment, making this a great resource to have and refer to when needed.  This is a great read for Christians with how society is at this time, as it is can be overwhelming, confusing and just at times difficult to live how you believe you should be.

Marvin Olasky encourages Christians to view things with grace and truth. While some may not fully agree with the tone in every single column, World View provides a prescription to view current events and culture in America and abroad through a biblical lens.

Since the advent of blogging, books in column format have become much more accepted. They’re short, they’re easy to read, and they’re unobtrusive. However, they’re also generally sporadic. The authors have a hard time staying on track or keeping to the main theme- just imagine C.S. Lewis crossed with Andy Rooney and you’ve got a pretty good idea what you’ll be expecting from a book like World View. If you’re into reading short articles or almost daily readings, this is the book for you. There is a huge amount of truth packed into each column.

The author portrays more of his views and not really everyone’s majority views, which gives the reader a very different aspect of each situation or story. I feel like you could easily hate or love this book based on your own personal belief and the open mindedness of new ways of thinking about them. I would recommend this book for older readers with strong christian and faith based ways of thinking.

While deeply committed to the biblical truth of Scripture, Olasky offers hope for Christians who want to live lovingly and truthfully. His is a vision of the vocation of Christians to lives of humility, kindness, and mercy. That makes this collection a must-read for our political and cultural times.

When Christians are attacked for their beliefs or morals, it is best to respond with a truthful but graceful voice. Attacking back does no good. The compilations in this book reiterate that. Some of the topics covered are politics, abortion, and race. I found World View to be very insightful and it got me thinking about how I present myself in certain situations.

This is a book I almost didn’t read and that would’ve been a totally miss on my part! I was really surprised at how much I liked this book. I think they choose great articles to combine together in one book. I found myself nodding throughout it! Easy to read as each article is only a couple of pages.

World View is a powerful book. It really got me thinking about how I present myself as a Christian and how my views are approached. I love how it is broken up into small chapters each with a theme. It can be read all at once or broken down daily. They are broken up by topic of articles he has written over the years. There are chapter about protesting, politics, opinions, world views, hard hitting topics of our time and more.

Certainly worthwhile for conservatives and liberals alike. Olasky is unabashedly conservative; fellow right-of-center readers will find an ally in him, while left-of-center readers may find common ground or opportunities for further dialogue.

These columns are a good resource for thinking Christians. It is not a book one would read cover to cover. I suggest readers look at the index and read articles on topics of interest. The essays are a good example of how Christians can reason through issues.
