Upping Your Blog’s Page Views

February 14th, 2013

I have a small corner of the web where I like to rant and rave and pound out my thoughts, and while it is far from the most “popular” blog on the web, I have picked up a few tips along the way about making the number of page views on your blog rise.

Here are just a few tips for helping you get your page views up:

Comment on other blogs. Give some to get some. If you comment on five to ten different blog posts every day, you’ll start getting click-overs (a little word I made up that means people will use your comment to “click-over” to your blog from your comment). Make sure your comments are actually well-thought-out and engaging—not simply, “Keep up the good work. I love your writing.” (Because really? That just comes across as spammy and disingenuous.)

Numbers: Do They Really Matter for Your Blog?

January 22nd, 2013

If you blog, you should blog for yourself. You should do it because you love it. And you shouldn’t do it because of the numbers or the fame that often comes when the number of site visitors reaches into the hundreds of thousands.

However, that doesn’t mean you should write off the value of numbers. Yes, numbers are valuable in the sense that they measure the popularity of a site. But just as your own worth doesn’t come from the number of friends you have or your “popularity” (hello, high school) but instead comes from who you are, so it is with your blog. Your blog’s worth comes from its content, and numbers can certainly be a tell-tale sign of what you’re doing wrong or what you’re doing well.

A good website tracking and counter tool will do more than just show the number of unique visitors and page views… read more »

How to Find Photos to Use for Your Blog

November 13th, 2012

You just wrote an amazing blog post that you hope will drive tons of traffic to your site (thanks, in part, to your SEO skills) . . . but you want to include a photo that will act as a visual representation of the concepts you wrote about.

Before you right click and save that image from someone else’s blog, think again; copyright laws prevent you from doing that and could have serious consequences.

Using someone else’s photo that is protected under copyright law is stealing. It’s the same as downloading music without paying for it. It’d be like claiming a Picasso photo as your own in 1910.

No, you can’t simply provide the link to other site where you hawked the image. That doesn’t provide sufficient attribution, according to law.

So what can you do? Here are a few sites that we consider go-tos for photos… read more »

Blog Scheduling 101

October 9th, 2012

Chocolate versus vanilla. The Beatles versus One Direction. Typed versus handwritten. Some of you might be convinced one is better than the other, but like many situations in life, preference is based on opinion, not fact. The same applies to blog scheduling.

Any publicist, marketer, or assistant who manages blogs, either of his or her own or for clients, has a preference for using technology or paper and pen to manage editorial calendars. One isn’t right; both have pros and cons. And lucky for you, we have two Litfuse team members with different preferences.

Technology (Caitlin)

I am a tried and true technology believer. I currently manage five blogs (four for clients and my personal blog), all of which have content that is posted daily. While some might find this overwhelming, I find that I’m able to stay on top of all the posts through a few programs.

I use iCal to schedule posts for two blogs (including this blog)…. read more »
